420 In The ATL

One of the greatest holidays of the year, April 20th, is upon us and Atlanta celebrates 420 in style. Here’s a guide to blazing the day away in Atlanta. Weather is looking pretty good so far:

First, the glass shop 42 Degrees offers discounts on glass pieces every April 20th so a great way to get your day started is to go shopping. Next, there are two big festivals going on in the same area:

Hippies: you can go over to Candler Park and check out the Sweetwater 420 Fest. From 2pm to 11pm enjoy Atlanta brewed beer and hang out with a fellow wooks. The festival is free to attend and boasts a music line-up including Dubconscious, Mad Professor, Captain Soularcat, Squirrelheads, and Neau Hall And The Magnificent 7. I went to the festival 2 years ago and it was very fun and very packed out.

Hipsters: you can go over to the 11:11 Teahouse and check out the Nophest 420 @ 11:11. The festival runs from Friday to Sunday starting at 8pm Friday and Saturday and Sunday. In addition to the small stage inside, there will be an outdoor stage as well. The fest has an extensive line-up of bands and DJs and various performance art. One day passes cost $10 and weekend passes cost $25 and both include free beer.

If you want to get in on the Earth Day community service action, here’s what we recommend:

For you “all ages kids”, April 20th happens to also be National & Global Youth Service Day (NYSD), the largest volunteer service event in the world. For more info on that, click here.

There are a ton of great shows going on Friday night. The Ohmpark crew is going to be checking out The Books at the Variety Playhouse we highly recommend you attend.

Another great show Friday night is Japan’s Acid Mother Temple at the Earl.

If you are into 420 Reggae Rockfests, Lenny’s is having one Friday night:

LENNY’S (NEW LOCATION!): the green hit (cd release), groove stain, the bastard suns, indofin, bpm, sassparilla the singing gorilla 21+ early show 8PM - $7 KNOCKWURST HAPPY HOUR 7PM-8PM (420 REGGAE ROCKFEST!!! Get here early at 7pm for some free snausages! www.lennysbar.com)

Late night if you can’t find one of the various house parties celebrating 420 around the city, It’s as good a night as any to head to Decatur and drink at the Decatur Social Club. Baring the city run tourist and police trap of Underground Atlanta, Decatur is the only place in the city you can drink at bars until 4am.

If you’re such a stoner that you can’t get off your couch, the G4 television network is doing 420-themed programming including showing The Big Lebowski. What an awesome movie.

We wish you a fun and safe 420 Weekend and smoke one for us!
