Live Videos: Cinemechanica (4/24/2008) Drunken Unicorn
I was able to get out of work with just enough time to catch Cinemechanica at The Drunken Unicorn last Thursday night, and again they were straight up spectacular. I think they may be my favourite Athens band short of Of Montreal right now. Here they are rocking out:
Tonight there are two big shows going on. Jay Reatard is big on the hype tip right and will be doing his thing as Lenny's. You can find more about him at his myspace or watch videos of him fighting with his audience here. If you are in love with the Black Lips, then this is probably the show for you to catch. While I wouldn't mind catching Jay Reatard, I am way more excited to see Destroyer tonight. Most people have been on the Destroyer-backlash bandwagon, but I absolutely love Trouble In Dreams. "Foam Hands":
Another album I have been jamming hard is Genghis Tron's Board Up The House. They will be at The Masquerade tomorrow with Converge. Genghis Tron at SXSW:
The other good show tomorrow night is at the Earl with Atlanta's Envie and One Hand Loves The Other, who has gone through some inner turmoil lately. It is a bit confusing to me, so here's Gavin from Stickfigure explaining the situation:
hey everyone,
One Hand Loves The Other are going on hiatus. Lou Rodriguez (the vocalist) is planning to reform the band but it appears at this point that he will be the only member continueing as one hand loves the other.
Mike Johnson, Mary Knight and Nancy Shim will be forming a new band. It is not 100% certain if Nancy Shim is leaving One Hand Loves The Other as well, but Mike Johnson and Mary Knight are playing their final performances with One Hand Loves The Other over the course of the next week. Of course in the age of reunion tours we can not definately say final shows @ this point now can we. but we can state that it will years before you can see this line up of the band every again.
the shows are as follows:
Tuesday April 29th @ the Earl. One Hand Loves The Other is headlining and performing with mystery palace and envie.
Saturday May 3rd @ Vinyl. Like Clockwork and When Rocky Beats The Russian are headlining since it is their cd release show. The Judies are also playing. At this time we do not know whether One Hand Loves The Other is opening or playing second.
take care,
gavin
So this week seems to be your last chance to check this out.
Other cool shows I like this week:
Friday: Behemoth, Dimmu Borgir at The Masquerade Friday: Cracker, Dead Confederate at the Variety Playhouse Saturday: Yeasayer, ManMan at Lenny's
One Hand Loves The Other : One Hand Loves The Remix : Tortoise (Treasure Fingers remix)
There is probably no other album that has affected me as profoundly as Built To Spill's Perfect From Now On. It is easily one of my top three personal favourite albums of all time. Back around the beginning of this decade, I got my first real exposure to indie rock as a great friend and roommate at the time would be jamming Modest Mouse and Built To Spill incessantly. At first I hated it, especially Issac Brock's vocals. I talked so much smack about these bands, and then one day after listening to them over and over, something inside me clicked. Suddenly, the more I listened to those two bands, the more I enjoyed them. It was at that point where I lost interest in the jambands, classic rock, and techno I had been listening to after initially coming to college. These new bands I discovered seemed to have so much depth compared to everything else I had been listening to at the time, and I basked in the ecstasy that can only be felt appreciating music as art.
Simultaneously as I was starting to embrace and explore good, progressive music, I was also going through a period of self discovery and trying to figure out what my life was all about. At almost the exact moment I got obsessed with Perfect From Now On, I had a spiritual epiphany of sorts, and listening to this album was instrumental towards that occurring. While I know that Doug Martsch is always downplaying the importance of lyrics in interviews, PFNO is one of the most brilliantly conceived and executed concept albums ever written; metaphysically epic yet simple words armed with beautiful melodies and long, complex song structures that no other album, BTS or otherwise, has come close to reproducing again. While classics like Darkside Of The Moon and OK Computer dealt with similar questions central to our existence, they failed to provide any real path to deal with these issues. Perfect From Now On not only takes you on a similar journey of despair, but also contains a framework for addressing these problems. And not in a preachy, tell-you-what-I-think way, but in a more abstract method where different listeners can reach different verdicts based on their own interpretations and experiences. The music I love the most is the sort that can be successful and enjoyable on as many different levels as possible, and it is hard for me to think of another album that conquers the multitude of emotions and aesthetics that this one does.
I managed to snag some tickets for ATP New York and I am ecstatic to catch Built To Spill performing this album. If you have never listened to this one, obviously I can't recommend it enough:
Let's get your weekend started with some local flavour. Atlas Soundwill be remixing a Sian Alice Group song for a forthcoming EP. Here's a video for one of my favourite Atlas Sound songs, "Recent Bedroom":

"Sleeping Giant":
Long time friends of Ohmpark, Parade, have announced their show tonight at Lenny's is going to be their last. They still have a new forthcoming album in June, but are not planning to do any shows in support of it apparently. This is very sad news for us, so here's some Parade tracks to jam and if you never caught them, go see them tonight while you still have a chance.
The AthFest line-up is out, and notables include Dark Meat, Cinemehanica, We Vs. The Shark, Elf Power, Twin Tigers, Venice Is Sinking, and Dubconscious. The fest is going down June 18-22 in Athens, Ga.
Rock The Bells tour is back and looking good, but the closest it is coming to us is Miami, FL:
Tegan And Saraare coming back to Atlanta for two dates at Chastain June 16 & 17.
Record Store Day In Atlanta: Dead Confederate, The Coathangers, Club Awesome
I spent a few hours last weekend at Criminal Records for their Record Store Day celebration. Here are the three local bands who played there that matter most:
Dead Confederate:
We've been talking about them for a while now around Ohmpark and the justified hype is starting to get some traction on the webs post-SXSW. Earfarm spent some time with them while they were down in Austin and has a bunch of cool material. Speaking of SXSW, you can get an entire performance here. Southern Shelter has just put up a show on their site where Dead Confederate played nothing but Sonic Youth covers at The 40 Watt in Athens earlier this year here. A sample:
Dead Confederate : Silver Rocket (Sonic Youth cover)
At Criminal:
They are touring steadily this summer, so go check them out:

The Coathangers
The Coathangers quick rise to ATLien elite status last year is an interesting phenomenon, and while I'm not the biggest fan of bands getting popular in this town solely because of their stage act and attitude rather than their music, these girls back up their their brash aura with clever lyrics and catchy tunes. I stumbled across this great remix of one my favourite Coathangers songs on the 'net last night:
The Coathangers : Parcheezie (Griff Remix ft. Fitzgerald)
Here they are doing that song last Saturday:
And Kimcriminal has one up too, she has tons of vids of in-store Criminal Record performances you an check out here.
They are also on summer tour, so go to a show:

Club Awesome
Atlanta's Club Awesome, known for their pool parties and "Whyte Tygre" suit, are what I would describe as in the greater post-punk/post-pop vicinity. I arrived too late to get some video of their show, but I did pick up a handmade advance copy of their debut album, and it is really good. Here's a track:
3 May - Atlanta, GA @ Smith's Olde Bar (500 Songs For Kids) 25 May - Wilmington, NC @ Soapbox (We Festival) 29 June - Atlanta, GA @ Lenny's (Corndogarama) 5 July - Atlanta, GA @ Star Bar (July 4 Weekend Fest)
I spent the majority of last weekend at Nophest and had a really fun time. The weather was perfect, the fest was extremely chill and I got to see a ton of cool local artists. I don't really have a play-by-play analysis because I decided to just kick back and enjoy this one rather than play the hardcore journalist, plus after my DJ set on Sunday I was pretty obliterated. I ended up missing many of the acts I wanted to catch, but that typically happens at a fest packed to the brim with great bands. Missile Command was one of my favourite sets of the weekend. They were noisy and brutal, two things I highly appreciate. Envie was really stellar again, although the vocals and keys were not loud enough and they are the sort of band that I think requires a good sound setup. I really enjoyed the Ship To Shore set. Mice In Cars rocked it. And of course Sorry No Ferrari and This Piano Plays Itself both put forth typically amazing sets. If you missed this one, be sure not to make that mistake again and catch the winter edition later this year. Here's some photos I took:
The blogosphere has fallen in love with this band almost as hard as they did for Vampire Weekend pre-backlash. I like them, but I sort of file them in the same spot I put bands like Black Mountain and The Sword, a very enjoyable band, but not really the most original. And its not the Band Of Horses/My Morning Jacket similarities that bother me as much as the Neil Young riffs that seem overtly stolen. But regardless of their lack of progressiveness or uniqueness, they are still very nice to listen to, so here is a live show for you to jam:
My Bloody Valentine (Curating the fest) Built To Spill (performing Perfect From Now On) (That in itself makes this the best fest of the year) Meat Puppets (Performing Meat Puppets II) Thurston Moore (Performing Psychic Hearts) Tortoise (Performing Millions Now Living Will Never Die) Shellac Mogwai Polvo Fuck Buttons Autolux The Drones Low Wooden Shjips Edan with Dagha Thee Silver Mount Zion Orchestra
Also, only 3000 tickets will be sold to the 3 day fest happening in New York, September 19th-21st. It looks to be really pricey, but I can't miss this one. ATP website. Tickets go on sale Friday.
Ok, I wasn't feeling the new Cloud Cult material I had listened to casually on the Internet or at SXSW, but I just got finished listening to the new album, Feel Good Ghosts (Tea-Partying Through Tornadoes), and it is pretty damn good. So I retract any negative statements I made about it (this is one reason I'm not the biggest fan of early leaks). Not only are these guys a great band, but they are big time environmentalists riding a bio-diesel bus and putting out their releases on their label that uses recycled materials. When I caught them at SXSW they had a painter on stage creating art while they were performing. Tonight they will be at Smith's Old Bar, so I recommend checking them out:
So I feel like posting a few random tracks. I bought The Breeders' new album, Mountain Battles, the day after it came out and so far I don't really know what to think of it. At moments I love it and others I want to turn it off. It feels like it is in another world from how I remember Title TK, which reminds me I need to jam that one again. I may end up totally falling in love with this one, or I might stop listening to it and never think about it again, but regardless, this song is great:
Sonic Youth recently reissued their 1988 Ep Master-Dik, which I hadn't heard before this. I picked it up, and it is really cool. Here's a little cover from it:
Last weekend was a blast and I am still recovering from it, so posts will be brief today. Thanks to everyone who came out to Nophest!

Also, don't forget this weekend is Inman Park Festival, one of my favourite neighborhood fests.
Bonnaroo's "Big Announcement" this week was that Widespread Panic is replacing The Allman Brothers and doing their 43rd headlining spot at the 'roo. They also added Les Claypool, Charli 2na, Super Drag, What Made Milwaukee Famous, Adele, Grand Ole Party, and The Postelles. Other than WSP, those are some decent additions, but I'm way more excited about the acts they added to the Cafe/nightclub, including Dead Confederate, Colour Revolt, De Novo Dahl, Phonograph, Bear In Heaven, Howlin Rain, and Royal Bangs, all of which are acts that I am interested in checking out. I'll be doing a piece on all the lesser know 'roo acts very soon.
Pecanne Log had the extened trailer to We Fun up, so check it:
Pitchfork Fest addedSpoon, The Dodos, and Les Savy Fav. That is turning out to rather sweet line-up.
You can download a reversed version of the new Gnarls Barkley album for free here.
The RIAA spent $2.8 million dollars lobbying the government in 2007. Honestly, I would have expected that to be much higher.
Nick Thorburn of Islandstalks some smack about Vampire Weekend. Indian Jewelry has a new album coming out called Free Gold! and will be at Eyedrum on May 18th. I can't wait to catch them again.
Hella's Zach Hillhas a solo album coming out featuring a ton of really cool guest musicians such as Marnie Stern, No Age, Les Calypool, and Marco Benevento.
The weekend is almost here and I am very excited. Nophest announced a third stage of bands for Sunday April 20th at The Doogallery. For details on that and the full schedule, go to the Nophest website. I'm going to break down the acts that stand out to me and help you discover some new bands from the massive line-up. Click on the band name to listen to some tracks on their myspace or website:
Friday:
7:45pmLovesick Scientist: A project of Justin Sias (Elevado) that is produced by Brian Slusher (Slushco). With those two top tier ATL musicians involved, it has to be good.
8:30pmR_Garcia: I've just sort of been introduced to Randy Garcia through Nophest, but everything I sees points to him being a pretty badass musician and dude, so I'm ready to catch this one.
9:15pmMissile Command: A band featuring members of Elevado. We got a sneak preview performance of these guys at our one year anniversary party and they rocked out hard so I've been excited to catch the Missile Command again. Here's some tracks to jam:
10:00pmPush Button Action Man: This is an electronic music side project of Zachary Hollback, who has been a part of great Atlanta bands such as I Almost Saw God In The Metro, The Brodie Stove, and Tenth To The Moon. Here's a sweet electro-jam:
11:30pmTenth To The Moon: Experimental music that incorporates dance and industrial sounds with lots of insanity. I caught them last year at ISP Space and thought they were extremely entertaining. They are on Stickfigure and it appears that Sean Moore of Lid Emba (who's new release I just listened to and is awesome, more on that soon) is now involved with the project:
11:30pmA Fight To The Death: If you're looking for some low-key Americana that is really good, checkout this ATLien band.
Saturday:
1:30pmWonder Root Non-Profit Workshop: Wonder Root is a really cool organization supporting artists in the Atlanta area. I will be going more in depth about them next week, but just realize they kick ass and Ohmpark will be working with them to accomplish some neato things.
3:15pm Capibara: Never heard of this band before, but they have cool influences, and the two songs on their myspace feel like they may have some potential to rock out hard.
5:30pmMooseknuckle Sandwich: Song names like "I Hate You We Should Fuck" and "Skull Fuck Of Death" are enough to spark my interest in this OTP band from Pensacola, FL. They seem brash and experimental, and I'm always looking for acts like that.
6:15pmShip To Shore: Atlanta post-rocking trio I was unfamiliar with until now, but they sound really good.
7:00pmDevoradora: Nu-'60s Psych-rock power trio that sound damn good. This is high on my list of bands to catch at Nophest that I've never heard of before.
7:00pmThe Subliminator: Atlanta's avant-garde demi-god armed with spoken word and theremins is a required show for anyone who reads this blog and hasn't seen him before. He's a badass and someone who has a special place in this city.
8:30pmEnvie: I recently caught Envie for the first time this year at a Stickfigure Distribution show and they were awesome. You can check out a video and pics here. This is one of the best acts at the fest, so don't miss it.
10:00pmNerd Parade: I've been hearing noise about these guys lately and am excited to finally catch them and see what it's all about. Cool sounding indie-pop.
10:45pmCassavettes: I caught these guys late last year for the first time and became a fan. This one is definitely a can't miss show.
Sunday:
1:45pmMice In Cars: This is another band high on my list to check out that i haven't before. They do a tasty blend of post-rock and post-punk. This is completely worth getting an early start for.
4:00pm The Ohmpark Official Party featuring DJ Douschebag: Sunday night Ohmpark will be partying hard at the 166 Stovall Stage featuring acts such as Flexor81, S.K.I.P.(Orlando, FL),Gift Horse(Athens, GA), Chicken And Pigs, and DJ June Eleven. The show gets started with me spinning a 420 set as DJ Douschebag at 4pm sharp so be there by then for the a-party-calypse.
7:00pm13 Day Mission: Another Hijacking Music band I'm excited to catch, you'll notice their EP from last year is currently in my heavy rotation, and you can download the album for free by clicking on it.
8:30pmSorry No Ferrari: ATL post-rockers that I have really enjoyed both times i caught them live this year. I have some videos here.
10:15pmBatata Doce: Atlanta super group fronted by a Brazillian singer. Seems rather interesting
11:00pmThis Piano Plays Itself: They just finished their self-titled debut release and it is simply amazing. This is one of Atlanta's hottest up-and-coming bands and if there is one Nophest act you can't afford to miss, it is these guys. Behold:
With all the attention the Atlanta music scene gets for a certain bands on-stage antics and flaming pussy farts it's refreshing to know some people here are putting music and art first. Nomen Novum is just such a band. Led by Guitarist/Singer/Visual Artist David Norberry and also featuring Mark Godfrey and Alex Martin, as well as other guests musicians, Nomen Novum is a band that deserves a lot more attention from local and national fans.
Their recent 7" "Mantis Man" is a great record, from the production to the all the serious badass stuff that comes with it. For $5 you get all this:
For 5 bucks you couldn't buy all the blank media, paper, and materials that went into it. Fuck "Free" as the new price model, these guys are losing cash on each record they sell, if that's not dedication to your work then I don't know what is. You'll never get a greater deal on any piece of art.
You can buy the record from Criminal Records, Wax ’N Facts and Ella Guru. Or just send $5 to:
Nomen Novum 1572 Anita PL NE Atlanta, GA 30306
and "if you have a sleeve color preference please specify." Luckily for the southeast Nomen Novum will be touring soon, here are the dates:
May 9 2008, 8:00P at The Birdhouse in Knoxville, TN
May 10 2008, 8:00P at Yauhaus in Charlotte, North Carolina
May 11 2008, 8:00P Village Tavern in Charleston, South Carolina
May 12 2008, 8:00P at Caledonia Lounge in Athens, GA
More Dates to come. Here is a sample track from the 7": "Aunt Urn"
And here are some photos from their last show at The Drunken Unicorn:
Morning State New Album Finally About To Drop, Tourdates
Morning State's debut full-length, You Know People I Know People, is about to drop in a couple of weeks after some drama had delayed it. They had recorded the album last year and before it got released their record label collapsed so they were forced to re-record the entire thing this year over an 11 day span. The finished product sounds really good and I'll have a full review of the album when it comes out on May 6th. Next week they will leave on a short tour in support of it:
04/23 Birmingham, AL The Nick 04/24 Athens, GA Farm 225 04/25 Chattanooga, TN JJ’s Bohemia 04/26 Atlanta, GA Star Bar 04/28 Charleston, SC Tin Roof 04/30 Columbia, SC New Brookland Tavern 05/05 Atlanta, GA The Earl* 05/06 Athens, GA Caledonia Lounge (CD Release Party)* 05/10 New York, NY Mercury Lounge* 05/15 Atlanta, GA Star Bar (Big Trouble In Little 5 / CD Release Party) w/ Casper and The Cookies

Here's the new single that has been circling around the Internets:
Live Videos: The Ruby Suns, Throw Me The Statue (4/14/2008) The Drunken Unicorn
The Ruby Suns
Monday night's sparsely attended show at the Drunken Unicorn was really sweet. I missed ATL's Chainstereo, but I hope to catch them soon, because they seem interesting. Throw Me The Statue, from Seattle and signed to Secretly Canadian, took a substantially long time to set up their equipment and seemed to suffer from various minor malfunctions throughout their set. But, for the pop-rock style of which I typically don't care much for, they played a thoroughly enjoyable show and seemed to be really nice dudes, volunteering more conversation with the audience before and after the show than most acts I see. Slightly after midnight,The Ruby Suns took stage. The 3-piece incarnation of Kevin McPhun's project did a respectable job of performing the music from an album that I would have figured to be very hard to reproduce live. I listened to Sea Lion again today and I love it so much. Here's some vids and pics:
Start today by watching Deerhunter cover Pylon's "Cool" at their New york show last Friday night where they performed their entire forthcoming album, Microcastle.
It is a mammoth week for music in the city. The biggest event of the week, 420, is being celebrated by two fests, Nophest and Sweetwater. Atlanta's Mice In Cars had this to say about the choice between the two on myspace:
Well, you have 2 options. You can go see some crappy bands that aren't in touch with the local music scene, pay A LOT of money for crappy beer from someone that rhymes with (and tastes like) Feetwater. Or you can come to the 3 day Festival featuring tons and tons of local musicians, artists, Djs and performers, watch movies, oh and did I mention FREE BEER. I don't know, you pick.
I couldn't agree more. Ohmpark is going to be at Nophest in full force all weekend for what looks to be a spectacular time. We'll have a full guide to Nophest 4 & 20 out tomorrow some time.
Before I go into all the other awesome shows going on here this week, I just want to say a few things about the shows I caught last weekend. Saturday night I went to see Big, the collaboration between Outkast's Big Boi and the Atlanta Ballet. It was a pretty interesting combination that I'm really glad I got to experience, although I didn't quite love everything about it. Seeing Big Rube do some spoken word was super cool. The most striking thing to me were the visual effects, which I think eclipsed the vast majority of big concerts I've seen. It doesn't make sense to me why bands with a big budget don't do more to utilize the technology in this realm that the Atlanta Ballet seems to be sporting. Also, last night I caught the Explosions In The Sky show at the Variety Playhouse. It was exactly as I anticipated, a serious assault of post-rock. Those guys are just so good.
Tonight I plan to catch The Ruby Suns at the Drunken Unicorn.
There are some other really sweet shows going on tonight as well:
Center Stage:Spoon, The Walkmen, White Rabbits The Earl:VHS Or Beta, Tigercity Variety Playhouse: Iron & Wine, Califone (SOLD OUT)
Thursday night there are two really interesting shows:
The Earl:Ski Club (former Kill Gordon, Sovus Radio, Variac), Josh Roberts and The Hinges, Passer By (Reunion show!!!) Star Bar:Dead Confederate, The Constellations, Hands Down Eugene (Free)
Friday night I'll be hitting Nophest, but there are some other cool shows going on worth mentioning: Masquerade Music Park:Feist Lenny's:The Selmanaires, Coathangers, Sleep Therapy
Saturday is National Record Store Day and Criminal Records is having a ton of bands performing at the store for free. Here's the schedule:
BAND SCHEDULE (subject to change) Outdoor stage: 1:00 PM - The Bridges 2:00 PM - Ocha La Rocha 3:00 PM - Bobby and the Soft Spots 4:00 PM - Suitcases 5:00 PM - Judi Chicago 6:00 PM - The Coathangers 7:00 PM - Anna Kramer and the Lost Cause 8:00 PM - Noot d'Noot

Some non-420-fest things going down Sunday include:
The Earl:Cassavettes (Dunch 1pm-3pm) Masquerade Music Park: "Gigantour" Megadeath, Job For A Cowboy, High On Fire, In Flames, Children Of Bodom
Atlanta psych-rockers formerly known as A Fir-Ju Well are hitting the road on Wednesday in support of their new 7" as we wait for their debut full length as Gringo Star due out later this year. I've been a fan of these guys for a long time and I think they are about to seriously blow up. Pitchfork has noticed them already. Us Atlanta folks can catch them at a Cinco De Mayo Festival in the Highlands May 5th or at The Star Bar With The Howlies and The Blakes (Seattle) on May 9th. Live Review: The Mars Volta (4/4/2008) House Of Blues, Myrtle Beach, SC
Ever since The Mars Volta show originally scheduled in Atlanta last weekend got canceled, I had been pretty bummed. The Mars Volta are very high on my list of favourite bands and I had only seen them once before at Bonnaroo 2005. So when I learned late last week that tickets were still available for the Myrtle Beach show, some of the crew and I decided to at the last minute to go. A very wise decision.
We arrived at the venue a little over an hour before the doors opened and already there was a large crowd. The House Of Blues had a VIP line to get in the venue before everyone else, and you had to purchase $15 worth of stuff from their store to get let into it. I had never seen anything quite like that before. Then upon entering the venue when doors opened, the security searches were about as comprehensive as I have ever seen. They used metal detectors and we had to empty our pockets into containers. I felt like I was at the airport. I got inside and quickly staked down a spot a few bodies from the front of the stage.
The Mars Volta would come on a few minutes later than scheduled and play for slightly over 2 hours and 45 minutes. It was everything I had hoped it would be. Thomas Pridgen is an absolute beast on drums. At certain points, Omar would be acting as conductor through jamming sections and it almost appeared like he was pissed at his band every once in a while. Maybe that's just the way he does it. I thought Cedric really shined, hitting everything flawlessly. He was throwing what I thought were guitar picks at Omar's brother playfully throughout the show. Also, I don't believe his hair is real. The setlist seemed to be a bit smaller than other setlists I had seen, but rather than getting to hear a ton of songs, I got to experience a ton of jamming, and I think I prefer that from this band anyways. Here is the set as best as I can determine, but there was a bunch of in-between parts I did not recognize at all:
The venue itself had some of the best sound I've ever heard. About half way through the show I left my spot up front to hit the bar and I would just walk from one place to another and everywhere sounded great. The way the building was shaped was also very neat, as there were inclines in the floors so that you could see the stage from just about anywhere. Despite the fact I'm not the biggest fan of tight security, it seemed to be a necessary evil in such a professional arena. Especially considering the crowd, which was the one part of the experience I did not enjoy. Near the beginning of the show, a whole bunch of meatheads pushed their way to the front, and the crowd was full of examples why I would never want to live in Myrtle Beach. Cedric even had to yell at the crowd between songs because they were all talking through quiet parts and committing other various rude concert etiquette infractions.
But all in all it was a fabulous experience and I hope I get to catch them again sometime soon. Hopefully they'll reschedule their Atlanta date.
After catching Islands a couple of times at SXSW, I have been on a serious tear with them lately. There is something special about an album that I can legitimately get obsessed with two seperate times. From the ashes of The Unicorns when Alder Penner left the band, Nicholas Thorburn and drummer Jamie Thompson formed Islands in 2005, and they recorded this instant classic album. Featuring guest appearances from members of Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade, I think that Return is a paradigm of how great music has become this decade. If you've never tried this one out, jam these tracks and videos and then go pick it up:
Of course the reason I bring this up is because Islands are about to release their follow-up album to this one, Arm's Way, on May 20th. Jamie Thompson left the band between the two LPs, so now Islands seems to be completely Nick Thorburn's own project now, with a retooled band around him that sounded incredibly tight at SXSW. Here is another track that is floating around the Internets from the upcoming album:
I'm getting very excited about this one. The Islandsare on tour as of next week and their last date is here in Atlanta on May 26th at The Masquerade. Don't miss it. Here is the new album cover to ponder:
Ok, this episode of "What The Hell" is gonna be large on tunes. There seems to be so many worthwhile albums dropping right now, it is hard to keep up. A great problem to have. Here are the many bands I'm crushing on right now like a little music slut:
Russian Spy Camera (Athens, Ga)
I know Ichuda already did a review of this album, but I've really gotten into this one hard, so I'm going to continue to hype it. Let me stress that you can download their entire album for free from their website. If you like good music, you will be wronging yourself if you do not go pick that up.
One major trend from bands this year is albums produced with heavy distortion a la The Jesus And Mary Chain. Bands like The Magnetic Fields and Times New Viking are great examples. So far, though, I think The Raveonettes' new album Lust Lust Lust is my favourite to employ those sorts of techniques.
The other popular trend in music this year is the Animal Collective influence. I'm surprised it took this long for AC to become so influential to new artists, but it was certainly inevitable. While The Dodos and El Guincho are fine acts, something about them feels like they are stealing the Collective's sound a little too much. Sort of like when I listen to Black Mountain or The Sword and their absorption of the '70s sounds. Sure they are fun and enjoyable to listen to, but I could never get totally obsessed with someone who is bascially copy-catting someone else. But, The Ruby Suns' new album, Sea Lion, seems to me to be the perfect blend of AC love and originality. They will be at The Drunken Unicorn Monday night.
The new Hot Chip joint didn't seem to get its fair fill of the Internet hype, but I've really been enjoying it. There are certainly some songs that are better than others, but the many great ones are really incredible. If you like dance music with a soul like I do, check this one:
Mostly because of Daniel Bejar's vocal style, Destroyer seems to be an act that you either love or can't really get into. Being on the love side of it myself, I'll make my plea to those who listened to it and thought "This sounds just like the last album". On the surface, sure, but if you dig into it, you'll find a much more epic experience and I think this may be his best yet. Destroyer will be in Atlanta later this month.
The Soco Music Experience going down in Centennial Olympic Park next month just got way lamer. Queens Of The Stone Age, who was tapped to headline, have cancelled "Due to circumstances beyong our control". They have been replaced by Against Me!. I will not be attending now. For all of you QOTSA fans that are feeling a little depressed, I'll try to cheer you up with a secret acoustic show they did in 2002. Enjoy:
Band: Queens Of The Stone Age Venue: Dachstock Reithalle City: Bern Country: Switzerland Date: 18th Of November 2002
Sunday I went to The Earl for Dunch and caught The Jupiter Watts doing a really nice, chill performance:
Check out this video of Mastodon in the studio working on their follow up album to 2006's Blood Mountain:
Deerhunterare doing a show in New York this weekend where they will play the new album they are currently recording, Microcastle, in its entirety. I really hope they do the same thing here in the A soon.
Thursday night you can catch Colin Meloy (The Decemberists) at The Variety Playhouse or go local and check out The Howlies, The Orphins, and The Hotpipes at The Earl.
And Sunday night is the Explosions In The Sky show at The Variety Playhouse. The originally scheduled show is sold out, but they added an afternoon show that same day, so go get your tickets before it sells out too.
There are some cool DIY shows going this week too if you like house parties:
141 Moreland Ave is hosting Pool Party, P. S. Elliot, Bandolier!, it's Elephant's, Wrister Tuesday night.
I Can Fly House is hosting Capsule, Furnace, Fag Static, The Sunglasses Wednesday night.
The first video of the day - a deeper look into the underground of the Atlanta music scene (and MARTA's central role):
I want to remix this.
Although I'm not sure how well received this raunchy music video will be, our second video of the day is a european dance track by Le le. According to the youtube info entry, "It consists solely of drawings made by Piet Parra that are also used as loops during the live performances. The song is about bitches and eggs..."

Ok, I promise this is our last SXSW post. Most Likely. Anyways, the last day of the fest started with us sleeping in a bit later than normal, but we made it in time to catch Plants And Animals at an Urban Outfitters next to UT campus. They rocked it out:
After a long hike back to the main strip, Biggie C and I split up. He went to catch Dead Confederate, who ended up using almost all of their set doing cover of Sonic Youth's "Diamond Sea". I went and caught Sea Wolf:
After that we met back up and went down to Waterloo Park where they had a free concert with three stages packed full of the big names at SXSW. It was like a mini festival in itself. We caught a bit of Yeasayer's set:
After that we sort of chilled out on 6th Street and did some resting and people watching. Fatigue finally caught up to me on my last day of the fest, so we balled out on a nice steak to get my mojo back and then went to one of the Emo's joints and caught Maps And Atlases. They brought a full finger tapping assault:
By the end of that set, everything on the main strip was packed out like crazy, and we weren't really feeling the vibe, so we headed down the street to catch the last Todd P event of the weekend. Todd P is a party thrower from Brooklyn, New York that is a champion of DIY shows and had put togther the acoustic show on campus we caught the first night, so we figured it would be cool. Here' a little vid about him:
The party was at a tiny dive bar called Ms. Bea's. Behind the building, a huge crowd of folks were chatting about, drinking, and catching good music on some make-shift stages. A band I discovered at the show who put on a really cool set was Sian Alice Group. At the end of the night we were waiting at the merch table for someone to sell us a CD, and we totally busted some dude trying to steal the bands' merch. It was a funny and surreal occurence, but we ended up meeting the Social Registry folks because of it, and they were really nice.
The last act we caught of SXSW was Atlanta's Atlas Sound. I tried not to see too many local acts I could catch here while in Austin, but as we are Bradford Cox super-fans around here, we couldn't resist. I thought he was at his best for the perfect way to end a great week:
All in all, SXSW was one of the most enjoyable fests I have ever been to in my life, and if you have been seeing all the ludicrous amount of coverage over the Internet for the last month and feeling jealous, just remember that when tickets go on sale next year and know that the huge price tag is well worth it in my opinion. Especially considering the big time fests like Bonnaroo and Coachella have upped their prices significantly now. Taking into account the enormous amount of free and unofficial events going on all weekend, you could have a stellar time without dropping a cent for tickets.
Also, The weekend in Austin was the greatest physical incarnation of the music revolution going on that I have ever seen. There were enormous choices. There were super exclusive industry parties and the best DIY shows in the US all within walking distance of one another. If there was one theme I took from the weekend, it is that art is alive and well in our culture and becoming more prevalent every day. It is rare a festival really inspires me, but SXSW turned to be a rather transcendental experience for myself. I'll have some long-winded discourses about various items the fest made me ponder about soon, but here's a final best-of-guide to SXSW 2008:
Radiohead Rage Against the Machine Nine Inch Nails Kanye West Wilco The Raconteurs Louis XIV Love and Rockets Gnarls Barkley Bloc Party The Black Keys Broken Social Scene Lupe Fiasco Flogging Molly Mark Ronson Cat Power The National G. Looking damn good. The official announcement should come at 8am. Lollapalooza website.
I'm about to head to Myrtle Beach for the night to catch The Mars Volta. Tickets for that show are still available so I would recommend quiting your day job and catching it. If you can't do that, the 13 Day Mission, Beatrix Kiddo, Miles From Pangea show 11:11 teahouse is going to be the hottness. If you are completely broke, here's a free show:
Lollapalooza is announcing its line-up on Monday, but the Chicago Sun-Times has leaked a bunch of it. The following bands have been confirmed:
Radiohead Nine Inch Nails Rage Against The Machine Wilco Grizzly Bear Battles The Raconteurs Kanye West Gnarls Barkley The Black Keys Broken Social Scene G. Love And The Special Sauce Blues Traveler Mates Of State Bloc Party Cat Power Stephen Malkmus Girl Talk Kid Sister Office The Cool Kids The Go! Team Jamie Lidell
That is serious line-up. This is going to be a big event. I think I'm gonna have to hit this one up. You may have noticed Grizzly Bear up there, and word on the street is that they are opening for some of Radiohead's dates. In other Chicago festival news, Pitchfork Fest has added some acts and the line-up is looking much better. As it stands:
Friday, July 18:
Pitchfork Music Festival and All Tomorrow's Parties present "Don't Look Back" Public Enemy performing It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
* Mission of Burma performing Vs. * + one more to be announced
Saturday, July 19:

Sunday, July 20:
* Dinosaur Jr. *SpiritualizedM. Ward* Ghostface and Raekwon ** The Apples in Stereo *Boris* Dirty Projectors ** Cut Copy *Extra GoldenEl Guincho* Fuck Buttons * + many more!
Keep in mind the ticket price is $65 for a weekend pass, which is a great bargain compared to the skyrocketing festival ticket prices from everyone else. Another festival announcement made some noise this week too: Baltimore's Virgin Mobile Fest. They announced their headliners:
Foo Fighters Jack Johnson Kanye West Nine Inch Nails Stone Temple Pilots
There's two things to note here. 1. The Stone Temple Pilots are indeed back and on the reunion bandwagon. They have announced that they have exactly 65 North American days scheduled right now. Talk about cashing in. Oh yeah, Scott Weiland is in a tiff with his other band, Velvet Revolver. 2. Why the hell is Jack Johnson headlining all these festivals? I mean seriously, this douche must be stopped. Jack Johnson is like a Dave Matthews who can't play more than three chords. The dude sucks.
Atlanta's Nophest 4 & 20 festival going down in a couple weeks has added more to its line-up and schedule and you can check it out at their website. Ohmpark is sponsoring the event, so expect epicness.
I had been rumour-mongering this forever, but Pitchfork has confirmed that Bradford Cox (Deerhunter/Atlas Sound) worked on The Wild Things soundtrack with Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs). They have also reported that Deerhunter is recording their new album, Microcastle, as a 4-piece, and Colin Mee is officially no longer part of the band.
R.E.M., Modest Mouse, The Nationaltickets go on sale tomorrow.
Al Greenhas a new album coming out that was produced by ?uestlove (The Roots) and will be at Chastain Park Amphitheater on July 16th.
STS9 and Umphrey's McGeeare going on tour together and will finish their journey here in Atlanta at The Masquerade Music Park on August 1st and 2nd.
Creative Loafing has a great piece of journalism this week as they document how ATLien Jessica Juggz shoots flames from her vagina. Yep, really. And you can catch her band Mourdella at The Earl tomorrow night.
A few days ago Radiohead announced a contest to remix their song "Nude" off of In Rainbows. A local musician and occasional contributor here on Ohmpark, Eric Guenther (From Exile) has met the challenge and done his own remix. Give it a listen, and if you like it, vote for our boy:
To make up for my April Fools Day Rickrolling post, here's a Radiohead concert they did on April Fools Day this year. Listening to this spectacular show just gets me so excited that I'm going to be seeing them soon:
Radiohead (Evening Concert) 1st April 2008 BBC Radio Theatre, London, UK
Broadcast by BBC Radio Two on 1st April 2008 for "Mark Radcliffe & Stuart Maconie"
An Atlanta band that is really impressing me lately is The Liverhearts. They have a new album they are about release called Ornament, and the live stuff I've heard from it sounds awesome. They leave on tour this Friday and are bringing the new album for you to pick up, so OTP readers be advised. They will return to Atlanta for their CD Release Show at The Earl with Lay Down Mains and Rizzudo on April 19th and will be opening for Cinemechanica at The Drunken Unicorn April 24th, so you ITP readers should hit both of those. Underground Hottlanta: The Hijacking Music Collective
Miles From Pangea
One of the many things I love about the Atlanta music scene is the sense of community that is very prevalent between artists, and everyone else associated with it. It is common around here for bands who share a vision to come together and help each other promote themselves and record and things like that. Industrial Strength Promotions is great example of this.
Recently I became aware of one such conglomerate called "Hijacking Music". It consists of 3 new and talented bands including 13 Day Mission (ATL), Beatrix Kiddo (Athens), and Miles From Pangea (Marietta). All three are instrumental groups that I would consider in the greater realm of post-rock and everything I've heard from them shows a ton of promise and potential. They have a recording studio they use called the "O Zone Lair" and they even have a blog: O Team Press. Give them a listen:
In terms of official releases, so far there is only 13 Day Mission's EP from last year, Ex Incendia Libertas, which I have been jamming out constantly over the last couple weeks, and it is available for free at their myspace. I highly recommend you go pick that up. Also, this Friday night, you can catch all three bands at 11:11 Teahouse with me for what looks to be a pretty awesome night of music and art:
Jonny Greenwood Quits Radiohead, All North American Dates Cancelled!?! (Happy April Fools!)
This really sucks. The two biggest shows of the Spring in Atlanta, The Mars Volta and Radiohead, have now been cancelled. Jonny has decided he wants to do his own thing and that Radiohead has gotten too big. Read the latest here.
Usually I don't get so into the Athens scene, but there is always some overlap when it comes between our two cities so here's a great Georgian band hott from their SXSW appearance:
We Versus The Shark are hitting the road for most of April and May in support of their new album, Dirty Versions, due out this month. Also, they are doing a covers album and releasing each song at the beginning of each month of 2008 here.
