What Up In The ATL?

Tonight I recommend going down to The Earl for a killer show. It starts off with Atlanta supergroup Batata Doce. Then a local band called When Rocky Beat The Russian. I had no idea who they were until researching this week's show listings and discovering the songs on their myspace page to be very impressive and intriguing. The show is headlined by North Carolina's The Physics Of Meaning, who is lead by multi-instrumentalist Daniel Hart. Hart is a member of St. Vincent and John Vanderslice's band and even contributed to recordings by The Polyphonic Spree, Annuals, and The Rosebuds.

Tomorrow there are two big shows to check out. Devotchka at The Variety Playhouse or Blood On The Wall at The Earl. I'm planning to Catch BOTW, but I think both of those would be good.

The Orphins, Nomen Novum Micro-Tour Starts Tomorrow

Two of the best bands in this city are doing a few OTP dates over the extended weekend. If you read Ohmpark regularly, you know we are big Nomen Novum fans, but we don't talk about The Orphins nearly enough, mostly because they haven't been the most active band since releasing their first full-length, Drowning Cupid, back in 2004. I just recently purchased another copy of it because I had lost my original, and have had it back in my listening rotation. It has got to be one the best albums to ever come out of the A.

As I listen to Universal Indians, I find myself really loving the extremely weird stuff, but not so into their particular brand of southern rock during the more accessible parts. The New Hottness To Me: Jeffrey Lewis

The greatest discovery I made at SXSW came the very first night. I scored a great spot up front by the stage at the Brooklyn Vegan showcase. I decided to chill there for the next act, whom I didn't recognize, to be up front for Kaki King later on. My expectations were low, because something about the tired "Frontman's Name" and "The Band's name" formula always seems to lead to a bad act unless the frontman previously was part of a great band. Jeffrey Lewis and The Jitters was an exception to this, and ever since catching that show, I have been enthralled with him.

It has been an extremely long time since I discovered a new personal music hero, and it is rare indeed that a person I hadn't even heard of a few months ago could earn such respect with me, but Jeffrey Lewis is just that amazing. Lewis is the paradigm of an artist. Not only does he make great music, but he also draws cool comics, and in both endeavors they are completely about unrestrained self expression. He is the greatest incarnation of the DIY ethos I have ever heard. His songs are powered by extremely clever lyrics, but the music captures the perfect simplicity that reminds me of the magic of Daniel Johnston, or Nirvana's Unplugged album, or Beck or Neil Young stripped down acoustic songs. I will always be more impressed about taking the most basic of music structure and making it stand out above everything else rather than the almost athletic nature of playing scales and rhythms faster than anyone. I like those who can do both best, but if I have to choose one, music is about art first to me, and at this point, I can't think of anyone else that does music purely in that realm better than Jeffrey Lewis.

On a completely personal level, I couldn't have discovered him at a better time in my life. I'm at a point where I'm making some serious life choices that are intended to allow me to live my life on my own terms. I want to pursue a life centered around art and self-expression and writing, and Jeffrey Lewis's back catalog is a very reassuring and pertinent soundtrack to this new, weird and mysterious road I'm traveling on. Radiohead!!! I am all pumped up about catching them in Atlanta on Thursday and I even decided to ball out and catch them again in Charlotte Friday night. I've been wanting to see a Liars show for forever, so I'm excited about that too. Here is the entire Radiohead Glastonbury 2003 set to get you hyped up for this week's biggest event:

Saturday night everyone in my neighborhood was partying with all the college kids graduating and getting ready for summer. I caught an impromptu, late night jam session between members of two of Atlanta's hottest metal bands, Daath and From Exile. Both are working on new albums currently that should be out this year. In this video, they start out on an FE lick, and end up in a total blues jam (The cops showed up shortly after this):

I discovered Carla Bozulich's Evangelista right when I started Ohmpark, and it was one of my favourite albums from 2006. She has now taken the name of that album as the name of her band and just released Hello, Voyager, which has gathered everything I loved about Evangelista and upped the ante. What Carla Bozulich brings to the table is dark and and in your face vocals and lyrics that hit you hard in the depths of your soul. She is experimental, but not in a way that is hard to appreciate, and she jumps from style to style without ever seeming ambling or lost. I'm totally in love with this release right now, so don't miss out:

Genghis Tron (Philadelphia, PA)

I just caught this arty-metal trio this week and they were badass. With bands like Mastodon and Mastodon Jr (Baroness) getting attention in the indie rock blog world, it is only a matter of time before these guys get their own hype bandwagon. Armed with digital drums instead of a drummer and lots of keys, their synthetic brand of metal create a very interesting aesthetic that stands above a genre that doesn't always reward outside-of-the-box thinking. No matter where your tastes lie, there is something worthy of your ears on Board Up The House.

Brass Bed (Lafayette, LA)

We had Brass Bed in Atlanta for a house party earlier this year and they absolutely killed it. They do a '60's psychedelic style blended with many other influences that feels fresh and original. Their first professionally recorded release, Midnight Matinee, is one of those rare albums where every single song on it is a hit, while the sum its parts make up a fun and engaging sonic experience. Deerhunter is opening for a handful of Nine Inch Nails dates including the Atlanta show on August 13th at the Gwinnett Center Arena. That should be a pretty sweet show. Also, it appears that Deerhunter has found a replacement for Colin Mee.

Yo La Tengo is scoring a movie for Super Bad director Greg Mottola.

Roger Waters' flying pig took off during his performance and never came back. The remains of the pig were found later this week.

Festival Madness

Summer is upon us and that means festival season is in full swing. 2008 is a banner year in the history of US Festivals, both in terms of quality and and quantity. It wasn't so long ago that Coachella and Bonnaroo stood alone as revolutionary festivals steering the US scene in new directions. As the touring fests dominant in the '90s began to lose their luster and become just another tour, a new model, or rather the reintroduction of the original model, began its ascension. 10 years ago neither Bonnaroo nor Coachella existed, and now there is like a billion fests all over this country that would never have been born without the two OGs. It is hard for me not to believe that over-saturation of festivals is on the horizon, but so far, 2008 is another high water mark. Some fest news:

Tonight there are two big shows going on. Jay Reatard is big on the hype tip right and will be doing his thing as Lenny's. You can find more about him at his myspace or watch videos of him fighting with his audience here. If you are in love with the Black Lips, then this is probably the show for you to catch. While I wouldn't mind catching Jay Reatard, I am way more excited to see Destroyer tonight. Most people have been on the Destroyer-backlash bandwagon, but I absolutely love Trouble In Dreams. The other good show tomorrow night is at the Earl with Atlanta's Envie and One Hand Loves The Other, who has gone through some inner turmoil lately. It is a bit confusing to me, so here's Gavin from Stickfigure explaining the situation:

One Hand Loves The Other are going on hiatus. Lou Rodriguez (the vocalist) is planning to reform the band but it appears at this point that he will be the only member continueing as one hand loves the other.

Mike Johnson, Mary Knight and Nancy Shim will be forming a new band. It is not 100% certain if Nancy Shim is leaving One Hand Loves The Other as well, but Mike Johnson and Mary Knight are playing their final performances with One Hand Loves The Other over the course of the next week. Of course in the age of reunion tours we can not definately say final shows @ this point now can we. but we can state that it will years before you can see this line up of the band every again.

Tuesday April 29th @ the Earl. One Hand Loves The Other is headlining and performing with mystery palace and envie.

Saturday May 3rd @ Vinyl. Like Clockwork and When Rocky Beats The Russian are headlining since it is their cd release show. The Judies are also playing. At this time we do not know whether One Hand Loves The Other is opening or playing second.

Albums I Love: Perfect From Now On

There is probably no other album that has affected me as profoundly as Built To Spill's Perfect From Now On. It is easily one of my top three personal favourite albums of all time. Back around the beginning of this decade, I got my first real exposure to indie rock as a great friend and roommate at the time would be jamming Modest Mouse and Built To Spill incessantly. At first I hated it, especially Issac Brock's vocals. I talked so much smack about these bands, and then one day after listening to them over and over, something inside me clicked. Suddenly, the more I listened to those two bands, the more I enjoyed them. It was at that point where I lost interest in the jambands, classic rock, and techno I had been listening to after initially coming to college. These new bands I discovered seemed to have so much depth compared to everything else I had been listening to at the time, and I basked in the ecstasy that can only be felt appreciating music as art.

Simultaneously as I was starting to embrace and explore good, progressive music, I was also going through a period of self discovery and trying to figure out what my life was all about. At almost the exact moment I got obsessed with Perfect From Now On, I had a spiritual epiphany of sorts, and listening to this album was instrumental towards that occurring. While I know that Doug Martsch is always downplaying the importance of lyrics in interviews, PFNO is one of the most brilliantly conceived and executed concept albums ever written; metaphysically epic yet simple words armed with beautiful melodies and long, complex song structures that no other album, BTS or otherwise, has come close to reproducing again. While classics like Darkside Of The Moon and OK Computer dealt with similar questions central to our existence, they failed to provide any real path to deal with these issues. Perfect From Now On not only takes you on a similar journey of despair, but also contains a framework for addressing these problems. And not in a preachy, tell-you-what-I-think way, but in a more abstract method where different listeners can reach different verdicts based on their own interpretations and experiences. The music I love the most is the sort that can be successful and enjoyable on as many different levels as possible, and it is hard for me to think of another album that conquers the multitude of emotions and aesthetics that this one does.

I managed to snag some tickets for ATP New York and I am ecstatic to catch Built To Spill performing this album. If you have never listened to this one, obviously I can't recommend it enough:
