Live Review: Radiohead (5/8/2008 & 5/9/2008) Atlanta & Charlotte

Last week I was on Radiohead overload and I loved it. I think maybe every single person I know in this city was at the Atlanta show. They are so damn popular now. I mean no matter what sort of style or taste in music of people I know, they all at least can appreciate this band. One down side of this is that there is going to be a crowd with some douches in it, as I've heard many people complain. But I would challenge anyone to tell me about a sold out show at Lakewood that didn't have its share of annoying people attending.

That said, I was probably one of the more annoying people at the show. Since I had seen them 4 times before this and I was pretty much stone cold sober for all of those concerts, I decided to get blotto for this one. Since the night is pretty much a blur, and most people reading this blog were probably also there, I'm just gonna note a couple of things:
  • I do not like overbearing cops and security at concerts, and there was way too much of that. People were getting arrested two cars down from where we were hanging out before the show. Why is it illegal to drink on private property at a concert but its ok to walk around with alcohol on Georgia Tech campus, which is lawfully not allowed anytime, during a football game? It is just such a stark contrast between the Phish shows I would go to back in 2000 at Lakewood and what that place has become now. I mean there really isn't much else worthwhile about seeing a show at that sized venue except the bigger-than-life party atmosphere.
  • While I'm ranting about how much I don't like Lakewood, Liars just didn't sound good in that venue. It was really disappointing to be listening to songs you know and love but not really enjoy them because you are like 7 miles from the stage. It made me not feel so bad being unable to catch a Radiohead show with Grizzly Bear opening.
Anyways, since a torrent of the Atlanta show has yet to surface, here's some vids:

"Talk Show Host":

To do the review of the Charlotte show the next night, I want to welcome Ohmpark's newest contributor, Josh West. I'm looking forward to many more great contributions to the site from him, and since he is a total Radiohead super-fan, this is a very appropriate debut:

@ around 1:39pm Friday 9 May 2008, I strolled through the door at Ohmpark to find comparable degrees of hungoverness to my own. We recounted the slides of our memory as an obligation – needing to put to rest the previous nights ecstasies in Atlanta in order to fully anticipate lightening striking us twice. With that, we were on the road to Charlotte where Radiohead was waiting once again.

Fast forward to the house lights falling. We found our way with beers in hand to the middle of the lawn as the cheers of the crowd gave way to the slow, soulful "All I Need." After a few songs to warm the crowd, as well as the band, and then…
all engineering efforts began to come alive. For starters, there are five cameras scattered about the stage positioned on a band member, instrument, or both and their feeds are displayed side by side in the widest of widescreens behind the band. So, if you're at the back of the lawn, you can still see Jonny go apeshit.

The fun (and electrical engineering) doesn't stop there. The band also decided to drape themselves in 50 or so waterfalls of light that vary between about 20 to 30 feet in length each. When they're in the middle of a jam, you can see this shit from space.
And for the rest of the evening, as they sprinkled a song or two from albums past amidst our new In Rainbows favorites, the five piece came off as very seasoned and highly coordinated professional showmen – because they are. At times I couldn't decide on the most interesting thing to watch – whether it be Thom's maniacal dancing or the other thing on the screen they happened to be making noise with at the time. Thankfully, there was only one thing to listen to.

Further, when you have accumulated the catalogue that Radiohead have over the past 15+ years, you can construct a setlist that has it all. They're like that campy-ass summer blockbuster movie that has something for everyone, except they're actually good. The opportunity to serenade his girlfriend during "Exit Music (For A Film)" proved to be too much for one young gentleman. Juxtapose that with this really long-haired girl completely wigging out and bumping into everything during "Idioteque" – but hey, don't we all? I smelled plenty of the sticky during "Sail to the Moon" and the pit went nuts for Thom on the kit throughout "Bangers & Mash."

…which lead promptly into the highlight of the evening as the main set closed with an absolutely explosive "Bodysnatchers." I've been challenged to find the words and the best I've got is this: never before has the onslaught of sight and sound translated into my body moving the way it did. I'm white, getting older, and I'll be very pressed to recreate such an outcome. Others around me, notably Biggie C, were also appropriately affected.

The band, as well as I, got a much-needed break after that. However, the treats continued as they returned to the stage to perform back-to-back numbers not appearing on major albums with "Go Slowly" followed by "Talk Show Host."
Most of the crowd proceeded to wet themselves after the first chords of "Planet Telex" and it was actually here that I felt the band silenced all doubters wherever they might be found – getting everyone going on an oldie. The lights were synced perfectly and undeniably pained over for this one. They held this ace for long enough and were really just showing off at this point.

The show closed with the perennial favorite, "Paranoid Android" introduced in one of Thom's few addresses to the audience as, "This one's a naaass-tee lit-tle bas-tard" followed promptly by "Reckoner."
In all, everyone had the opportunity to laugh, cry, clap, sing, dance, hug, fist-pound, high-five, bob their head, hold a lighter (if you're into that), burn one down (cause I'm into that) and look at the people around them periodically with that holy-shit look on their face.

If they're coming to a city near you, bottom line: go to the show. If you have to, drop some bills on the dude about 1000 feet from the venue who looks like your dad. He'll be referring to the band as "Them Radioheads." You'll pay more than face value on the ticket, but this is pragmatically irrelevant. Get in.

Videos Of the Day: Sad Kermit

I saw these on Stereogum and they were cracking me up, so I have to share them here. As sadkermit.com explains:

Soon after the death of Jim Henson, Sad Kermit spiraled downward into a life full of addiction, romance and pain. The songs and videos on this webpage shed light on Sad Kermit's descent into his dark, hurting world.

Sad Kermit doing Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt":

Elliot Smith's "Needle In The Hay":

And you can even download mp3s from the site of sad Kermit songs. Since it is Radiohead week in Atlanta, here's "Creep":

What Up In The ATL?

Radiohead!!! I am all pumped up about catching them in Atlanta on Thursday and I even decided to ball out and catch them again in Charlotte Friday night. I've been wanting to see a Liars show for forever, so I'm excited about that too. Here is the entire Radiohead Glastonbury 2003 set to get you hyped up for this week's biggest event:

Before I get into the rest of what is going on this week, I'm gonna hit you with a bit of last week. Here is Genghis Tron from last Tuesday night:

Last Thursday our crew hit up the Fuck Yesss Le Castle Vania birthday bash at The Drunken Unicorn and had a blast:

Saturday night everyone in my neighborhood was partying with all the college kids graduating and getting ready for summer. I caught an impromptu, late night jam session between members of two of Atlanta's hottest metal bands, Daath and From Exile. Both are working on new albums currently that should be out this year. In this video, they start out on an FE lick, and end up in a total blues jam (The cops showed up shortly after this):

Eskimo Bliss got some photos of the Yeasayer show last Saturday night here.

Have You Heard did some recordings with Atlanta's Today The Moon, Tomorrow The Sun, and they sound really cool.

In this week's edition of our obligatory Bradford Cox update, he has dropped another great, thematic Atlas Sound EP on his blog. I'm jamming it now, and I love this song:

Atlas Sound : Things I Miss EP : Marietta

Tonight there is a big show at The Earl. Atlanta's Morning State is having their album release party for You Know People, I Know People. The album comes out tomorrow everywhere, and it is great. I'll have a full review later this week. Also joining them for this one is Brooklyn's The XYZ Affair and Washington, DC's Jukebox The Ghost.

Jukebox The Ghost:

Friday Free-Style

Last weekend I caught Nomem Novum (newest project from Moorish Idols) at ParkGrounds and it was pretty cool. Here's a few pics and a vid:

Baroness will be at The Masquerade on March 20th. Even Pitchfork don't know that.

Stone Temple Pilots
are playing Wisconsin's Rock Fest.

The new Gnarls Barkley album, The Odd Couple, comes out April 8th.

Chris Rock, one of my favourite comedians, has been added to the Bonnaroo line-up and will be performing on the main stage. Awesome. How about a music video:

Find out why My Bloody Valentine didn't do Coachella here, and "Don't worry--they'll come to America."

So all the wookies and hippies pissed off about Metallica at Bonnaroo are rallying around the newest festival to emerge in this golden ago of American festivals. Behold Rothbury Fest:

Dave Mathews, Band Widespread Panic, John Mayer, 311, Phil Lesh And Friends, Primus, Thievery Corporation, Snoop Dogg, Modest Mouse, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Gov't Mule, STS9, Colbie Caillat, Slightly Stoopid, The Black Keys, Keller Williams And the WMD's, Yonder Mountain String Band featuring John Fishman, Gogol Bordello, Citizen Cope, The Disco Biscuits, Medeski Martin And Wood, Ray Lamontagne, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi Soul Stew Revival, Drive-By Truckers, Of Montreal, Etown Radio Show, The Dresden Dolls, Gomez ,Brett Dennen, Taj Mahal, Mike Gordon, Zappa Plays Zappa, Crystal Method DJ Set, JJ Grey And Mofro, The Greyboy All-Stars, The Secret Machines, Railroad Earth, Beth Orton ,Jakob Dylan and The Gold Mountain Rebels, A3, Bettye Lavette, Emmitt Nershi Band, Lotus, EOTO, Panjea with Michael Kang, Yard Dogs Road Show, State Radio, The Beautiful Girls, Sage Francis, Tea Leaf Green, Bassnectar, Pnuma Trio, Diplo, Flosstradamus, The Juan Maclean, The Dynamites featuring Charles Walker, DJ Rekha, Dead Confederate, Motion Potion, DJ Rootz, Sojorn Busdriver

So if you're one of those folks that wish it were 2003 and every hippy festival had the exact same line-up every year, you'll be ecstatic about this one. It goes down July 3rd-6th in Rothbury, Michigan. Rothbury Fest website.

A festival that I'd probably be slightly more interested in checking out is the New England Metal Fest. They got a line-up too:

The fest will be merging with Gigantour for one-night, as the Friday night portion of the show will feature Megadeth, In Flames, Children of Bodom, Job For A Cowboy and High on Fire, so the first night is officially Gigantour night. Saturday’s lineup will be headlined by Dimmu Borgir, Shadows Fall and Behemoth. Sunday will feature Ministry, Meshuggah and Nevermore. And that’s just the friggen headliners. Take a look at the rest of the bands expected to play on the show:

The Dillinger Escape Plan, Overkill, A Life Once Lost, God Forbid, Disfear, Hate Eternal, Municipal Waste, Shai Halud, Soilent Green, Skeletonwitch, The Acacia Strain, Vital Remains, After the Burial, Animosity, As Blood Runs Black, Belay My Last, Born of Osiris, Briandrill, Classic Struggle, Cockpunch!, Cold World, Dead to Fall, Demiricous, Eluveitie, Elysia, Embrace the End, Emmure, The End, Ensiferum, First Blood, From a Second Story Window, Full Blown Chaos, The Ghost Inside, Hemlock, Impending Doom, Keep Of Kalessin, Kid Deposit Triumph, Ligeia, Mensrea, Monstrosity, On Broken Wings, Recon, Red I Flight, Rhinoceros, Shipwreck a.d., Since the Blood, Sleeping Giant, Sons of Azrael, Stick to Your Guns, Stray from the Path, Through the Eyes of the Dead, Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganze, Trap Them, Turisas, Tyr, Unexpect, Unholy, Vanna, Veil of Maya, Waking the Cadaver, Winds of Plague, Withered, and Xtyrantx.

Pretty exciting! The event will take place from April 25 to 27 at the Palladium in Worcester, MA.

Stereogum posted some funny Valentines cards, so even though I'm a day late, here's a few:

You can go get Amplive's Radiohead In Rainbow remixes here while you ge ready to snag tickets tomorrow or are stoked about the tickets you got yesterday.

Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs worked on the soundtrack for the upcoming movie Where The Wild Things Are. The rumor going around when Deerhunter cancelled those shows opening for Grizzly Bear and Sparklehorse back in early 2007 was that Bradford Cox went to work on that with Karen O. That would be cool if that is true.

A six-year-old girl lied about her dad dying in Iraq to win Hannah Montana tickets.

The Eternal Hottness: Radiohead

As I eagerly await my In Rainbows discbox, I want to talk about the way it was released. If you are slacking and haven't got a copy of it, go get it now because the free download site closes tomorrow. Radiohead has yet to release any real numbers on how this album release experiment has gone, but all indications from the band members themselves point to it being successful on their terms. The debate that has raged since this all began is what kind of impact will this have on the music industry? There are a few dimensions to this that I want to break down. The first question to be asked is: Can this exact model work for anybody else but Radiohead?

A counter argument that Lily Allen made about this model is that what Radiohead are doing will hurt smaller artists: “They’ve got millions of pounds. It sends a weird message to younger bands who haven’t done as well...” I'm not sure Lily, who got big in the music industry because of her famous parents, can really relate to struggling bands, but let us take her point seriously. So far only Trent Reznor, who has been hating on the record industry for a while and currently not on a label, has tried this experiment with the new Saul Williams album he produced. The model is slightly different (you can choose between getting it free at 192 Kbps or pay $5 to get a higher quality format), but basically it is the same idea. Numbers have not been disclosed from that either, but even when they do, it's unclear how much of the big picture is going to be revealed. An artist like Saul Williams, relatively obscure compared to Radiohead, may reach a larger audience through this distribution model and the publicity surrounding it and this may increase sales of his music, tickets to shows, and merchandise down the road. But even Saul Williams is backed by Trent Reznor, who is pretty famous and rich himself. Radiohead's response to this argument, in this great interview you should read, is:

Ed: 'But the thing is, so much good music is now free anyway.'

Jonny: 'Yeah, the download culture is there anyway. It's King Canute - you can't pretend the flood isn't happening. This friend of mine bought the Muse album. And his 12-year-old son was just looking at it - "Wow, the real thing!" His son had the album already, he knew the songs, but he'd never held a CD. He just found it a curious object. That's kind of how it is now.'

This is the reality of the situation, and barring an invasion of Sweden, there really isn't much anyone can do to stop piracy altogether. It would be fairly difficult, in my opinion, to find a single album that came out this year that wasn't available somewhere on the internet. The next question, then, is: Does this exact model even have to work for anyone else to be successful?

Another naysayer of the Radiohead model has been Gene Simmons: “That’s not a business model that works. I open a store and say ‘Come on in and pay whatever you want.’ Are you on fucking crack? Do you really believe that’s a business model that works?” Well, maybe this model can't work for everybody, but it could change the game enough to find a better model than exists now. Two smaller bands that no one had heard of a few years ago but now have the potential to emerge as two of the greatest bands to come out of this decade, Deerhunter and Grizzly Bear, each have a blog where they release mp3s of their material for free. They've certainly had a ton of help from Pitchfork and the blogosphere in blowing up, but the reason they have received such a big buzz is completely about the music and performances they do, not because a record label is pushing them to play on the radio. In the current climate of the music world, anybody who makes amazing music can get that music out to the masses, and once they achieve a large fanbase, they can cash in on that success with tours, merch, and the people who still want a physical copy of the album.

Even if giving your music away doesn't end up being a viable economical model, just showing the current model doesn't work may be enough to get a better model together. When the music pirating site OiNK got shutdown recently, Trent Reznor had this to say about it:

"I'll admit I had an account there and frequented it quite often. At the end of the day, what made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store. Pretty much anything you could ever imagine, it was there, and it was there in the format you wanted. If OiNK cost anything, I would certainly have paid, but there isn't the equivalent of that in the retail space right now. iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc. Amazon has potential, but none of them get around the issue of pre-release leaks. And that's what's such a difficult puzzle at the moment. If your favorite band in the world has a leaked record out, do you listen to it or do you not listen to it? People on those boards, they're grateful for the person that uploaded it -- they're the hero. They're not stealing it because they're going to make money off of it; they're stealing it because they love the band. I'm not saying that I think OiNK is morally correct, but I do know that it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

The music industry doesn't know what the consumer wants. They have not adapted the way they should have to changes in the market. One music company that does get it is Emusic. I've recently become a subscriber to their service and I have to say I've been enjoying it. I pay $25 a month, and I can download 100 songs in high bitrate MP3s that are DRM free. Now the downside of Emusic is that the selection consists primarily of non-major label artists and it can be difficult to find things that aren't obscure, but just think if someone with the money and power in the industry could create a site that combined the Emusic model with the vast selection of OiNK. It would be a great start.

The final question to ask is: What if there is no model that works? The worst case scenario is pirating cannot be stopped and everyone stops paying for albums. In terms of the quality of music, would this necessarily be a bad thing? I mean, I doubt if you read this blog regularly you would think that those that have spoken against this model like Lily Allen, Gene Simmons, and Oasis have made better music than Radiohead and Trent Reznor, right? Viewing music completely as a commodity is not having a full understanding of what music is. I think free-market capitalism is some great stuff in most arenas, but with art, it doesn't seem to do anything but dilute the quality. If people can't make tons of money making music, that doesn't mean music is just going to stop getting made, it means that the people making music will do it for the love of music, not for the money. Now, I want to see the bands I love make money for their work, and I believe they can even in this worst case scenario, but at the end of the day, what matters most to me is hearing great music, and as the industry has been in a tailspin, I feel like I've been hearing more and more great music than ever in my life, so I'm pretty optimistic.

To sum it all up, Radiohead rules.

Here is the first test webcast, Entanglement:

MF Doom will be at MJQ December 13th. Check it out:

This will be an event to remember; including video filming for upcoming release. FIRE eaters in the parking lot. A large ICE sculpture of the MF DOOM mask for fan photo ops. The upgraded sound system for this event is going to ensure the maximum METAL FACE EXPERIENCE! It is also rumored that there will be models painted to resemble METAL to facilitate fan appreciation giveaways.

Also performing will be MOBONIX and MR. K members of MF DOOM s METAL FACE AKADEMY crew. MOBONIX is gearing up for the release of his long -awaited full length record, THIRD WORLD AMERICA featuring production by Bean One, Danspeak, and MF DOOM.

Also performing will be Budah Tye ( Universal Vibe Squad) Local support acts to be announced. Deejays will be Atlanta's own Apple Jac and underground-wizard Steve Deniro. This event will be hosted by Dres the Beatnik.

Advance tickets are $25. Tickets will be $30.00 day of show.
The price of tickets at the door will be discounted by $5 with the donation of a canned good.
A bit pricey, but when I caught him a few years back at Coachella, he was really great live. Here's a vid:

The new Wu-Tang Clan album comes out December 11th and they are touring. They aren't coming to Atlanta so far, but they are playing 3 dates in Florida that I hope to catch at least one of:

01-24 Orlando, FL - Club Firestone
01-25 Miami Beach, FL - The Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater
01-26 St. Petersburg, FL - Jannus Landing

Wu-Tang Clan : 8 Diagrams : As My Heart Gently Weeps (featuring Erykah Badu, Dhani Harrison, John Frusciante)

Bat For Lashes has an itunes Ep available.

Check out some Mastodon tour video diary:

Creative Loafing did a look back piece on the old Echo Lounge that used to have shows in East Atlanta. I got to catch a handful there and it was a really cool venue.

This looks interesting:

My favourite radio station, Album 88, is doing WRASfest on December 14th at Eyedrum. Here is the initial "teaser" line-up:

Cadillac Jones
Chopper
Clandestined
kids with codenames

And Finally, I saw over at It Covers The Hillsides these sweet fan-made music videos for an Arcade Fire song and a new Radiohead song using footage from some old films and I had to post them here because they are super sweet. Watch them:

Humpnight Randomnimity

Three interesting shows this week i didn't mention earlier are:

I can't decide which Saturday night show to hit up after Joanna Newsom, so I'll probably coin flip or something. With the Thursday night show, I guess I'm going to offer the dissenting opinion relative to all the other blogs in town that I would recommend going to Smashing Pumpkins and Explosions in The Sky over the free Star Bar thing. I know Black Kids are somewhat local and blowing up thanks to the 'fork, but I've listened to that EP a few times and it just doesn't stand out to me that much. It's not bad or anything, but it sounds like a dancier ripoff of the whole Swan Lake spectrum of indie-rock and its just not exciting me that much relative to all the other stuff I've been listening to lately. Also, I caught Judi Chicago last month, and as much as I hate ripping on locals, I have to call it like it is, and I think they just pretty much suck. Just because you perform crappy music in your underwear doesn't make up for the crappy music you are performing. I mean, the show is free so it's probably worth going if you don't have the cash for the other show, but I just wanted to get my opinion out there.

Now I'll cool off the haterade and give you a nice PJ Harvey vid:

Back to the haterade, Band of Horses are doing 3 New Years shows at the Earl and tickets go on sale Friday. BOH, or "Fisher Price, My First My Morning Jacket" as I like to call them, are another band that I think receive a little too much praise relative to what every other band on Earth is doing right now. Cease To Begin isn't a bad album or anything, but it's not a great one either.

Someone who is worthy of the hype is coming to Eyedrum in January:

The onslaught of My Bloody Valentine reunion rumors continue.

Want to see what Dethklok look and sound like live? Here you go:

Here's a The Octopus Project vid:

In case you had forgotten how awesome Marnie Stern is or you are a new ohmpark reader, here's a vid:

Between The Buried And Me are an awesome metal band that i've recently been jamming alot:

In case you don't know, Radiohead did some crazy webcast stuff last week. I've got a huge-ass article planned as i haven't really talked about the new album much and i'm still listening to it like crazy. Until i get a chance to go on an In Rainbows lovefest, here's my favourite song from it done live on the webcast:

New Radiohead Album Out In 10 Days!

Radiohead suddenly has a new album called In Rainbows finished. You can purchase a digital download now that you will receive in 10 Days. You can pre-order the "discbox" which includes the CD, a bonus CD, the vinyl, bonus tracks, and the digital download and receive it in December. The "discbox" costs 40 Euros which is very pricey in terms of the US Dollar, but you can choose whatever you want to pay for the digital download. They currently don't have a record label so I'm guessing that is why they can do something like this. Radiohead have always been pioneers in just about everything including marketing (like not releasing singles of Kid A/Amnesiac), so it is really cool to see a band try to completely cut out the need for a record label in times like these. I can't wait to hear this thing.
