[Stream] Little Tybee: “Passion Seekers”

In April, Little Tybee are releasing their second full-length, Humorous to Bees. But since I managed to get my hands on an advanced copy, I can already go ahead and tell you that it will be one of the best records to come out of Atlanta this year. The song-writing is focused, their technical prowess is flawless, and the sound is timeless yet distinct. Atlanta’s orchestral-pop scene is kind of ridiculous right now, and this album is another reason why. They have some interesting plans on how they will release the record, which I’ll have more details on soon, but in the meantime, Little Tybee are playing with Adron tonight (Thursday, Jan 27) at The Earl, so here’s a cut from Humorous to Bees that includes an Adron guest spot:

There is an unreal amount of good music coming out Atlanta just this month, and here’s a tiny fraction of it:

Seemingly out of nowhere, The Selmanaires just dropped their newest album, a 6 song, 30 minute EP called Tempo Temporal. You can find plenty of info on it at their blog. In the past I generally found about 25% of The Selmanaires stuff brilliant, and the other 75% not very enjoyable, but after just one listen I’m loving everything about this newest effort. I had heard rumours that the new stuff was something of a departure, and they have definitely veered in a much more palatable direction for me. The new record will be available on their upcoming tour that begins at The Earl this Thursday with Atlas Sound and Broadcast, but they are streaming the entire thing on their myspace and I highly recommend giving it a listen. Here’s the single they released that features guest vocals from Adron:

This weekend the great band with the long name will be dropping their 3rd album. It is yet another EP, containing 5 new songs along with a few old favourites remixed. It is titled Heavyweight Champions, and will be available at their release show this Saturday night at the Drunken Unicorn. Fans of TTMTTS will find this new release as enjoyable as their previous work, but there is an energy and magic this band possesses live that they have still yet to fully capture in the studio. I love the remixes, but the original section seems to lack a bit of momentum at times. It might be more a matter of preference for me than quality though, and overall it’s still well worth checking out. They will be posting new songs all week on their myspace page, but here is my favourite from it:

Snowden

While we continue to anxiously await the follow up to 2006′s Anti Anti, Snowden has given us a little something to hold us over for now. They recently contributed a cover to a tribute album for Bauhaus offshoot Love & Rockets. The compilation features contributions from the likes of Black Francis and A Place To Bury Strangers along with many others. Here is their take on “No Words No More”:

Hottlanta Videos: Mastodon, Spree Wilson, IndieATL

Mastodon are going on tour with Dethklok, Converge, and High On Fire this fall, stopping by The Tabernacle November 5th. This news made me realize I never posted this video for “Divinations”:

I’ve been trying to dig a little deeper into the local hip-hop scene lately in search of something better than the Gucci infused “IgnorRap” that dominates this city. One fellow that I’ve stumbled across that has been impressing me is Spree Wilson. Here are a few videos on his myspace that you should check out:

Finally, IndieATL is a great project from Matt Rowles that captures local independent acts, and sometimes even some touring artists coming through the city, playing live performances in Georgia State’s Digital Arts Entertainment Lab. As I continue to dig deep through the Atlanta underground music scene looking for something new, I’m perpetually surprised that the well never seems to go dry. Just when I think everybody in this town doing something special is on my radar, I discover yet another fantastic artist. The newest gem in the rough that I believe is going to blow everyone in this town away in the coming years is Sound On Film. I’ve caught two live shows so far, both of which were extremely impressive, and I’ve just grabbed a copy of their new record, The Eloquent Reginald, and I can’t stop listening to it. Sound On Film‘s potential seems boundless, as they are barely out of high school, and at such a young age they seem more capable and talented then most veteran local bands. You can download their 5 song record below for free, so get on the bandwagon now before everyone else does:

Noot d’ Noot @ Corndogorama 2009

After catching Noot d’ Noot‘s triumphant Corndogorama performance this year, I picked up a copy of their newest release, Cash For Gold, and have been jamming it hard ever since. While I’ve warmed up to it over time, Goofer Dust was just a bit too abstract and ambling for me to really get into, but Cash For Gold seems to synthesize the best parts of their previous jazzier studio work with the brilliance of their funky live performances, resulting in a perfect, best of both worlds blend. On top of the actual music being top-notch, the packaging to the record includes plenty of fun extras, so go pick it up:

Adron @ Star Bar (6/25/09)

Adrienne McCann popped on my radar a while ago, but after a casual listen to a song or two, I had unfairly wrote her off as as just another ordinary local singer/songwriter, of which this town is filled to brim with. Once she had left us ATLiens behind in search of glory in New York, I didn’t think to check her out again until I heard recently that she was mulling over returning to the dirty south. I downloaded a copy of her new EP, Burdwurld, which she is giving away for free, and now I finally see what all the buzz was about. This city loves to get behind a pretty face regardless, or more often, in spite of actual talent or musicianship, but Adron most definitely has the artistic goods to back it up.
