[Stream] All The Saints: “Half Red, Half Way”

All The Saints‘ second record, Intro To Fractions, hasn’t seen an official US release yet, but it’s been out and about on the web for a while after being delayed by the death of Touch & Go, who was originally slated to release it back in 2009. Regardless of all that, it’s another phenomenal album from one of my favourite Atlanta bands, so you should track it down. They play Friday (June 29th) at 529.

Last weekend’s throwdown at the Goat Farm was definitely a fun one. Local videotaper Iflimbands got a ton of killer vids from the day, so here are a few to check out, and then dive on in to his youtube account to watch the rest:

Hottlanta Videos: Mastodon, Spree Wilson, IndieATL

Mastodon are going on tour with Dethklok, Converge, and High On Fire this fall, stopping by The Tabernacle November 5th. This news made me realize I never posted this video for “Divinations”:

And while I’m at it, here is a 16 minute Mastodon live video from Download Fest:

I’ve been trying to dig a little deeper into the local hip-hop scene lately in search of something better than the Gucci infused “IgnorRap” that dominates this city. One fellow that I’ve stumbled across that has been impressing me is Spree Wilson. Here are a few videos on his myspace that you should check out:

Finally, IndieATL is a great project from Matt Rowles that captures local independent acts, and sometimes even some touring artists coming through the city, playing live performances in Georgia State’s Digital Arts Entertainment Lab. Here are a few choice videos to give you a feel for what this thing is all about, and then click the link below to dig on through all the goodies:

Ohmpark Mixtape #7: Atlanta Outkasts

Operatin under the crooked American system too long
OutKast, pronounced out cast
Adjective meaning homeless, or unaccepted in society
But let’s look deeper than that
Are you an OutKast?
If you understand and feel the basic principles and
fundamental truths contained within this muzik, you probably are
If you think it’s all about pimpin hoes and slammin cadillac do’s
You probably a cracker, or a nigga that think he a cracker
Or maybe just don’t understand
An OutKast is someone who is not considered to be part of the normal world
He is looked at differently
He is not accepted because of his clothes, his hair
His occupation, his beliefs or his skin color
Now look at yourself, are you an OutKast? I know I am
As a matter of fact, fuck being anything else
It’s only so much time left in this crazy world
Wake up niggaz and realize what’s goin on around you
Poisonin of the food and water
Tamperin of ciggarettes
Disease engineering control over your life
Take back your existance or die like a punk
This is Big Rube, sayin right on to the real, and death to the fakers
Peace out

-from Outkast’s “True Dat (Interlude)”

This week Creative Loafing dropped their yearly Music Issue. The theme was mixtapes, and they created their own rather lengthy list full of Atlanta artists. They are even having some shows next week and a 10 song LP available from the artists they showcased in the issue. They also had a bunch of random people drop some guest mixtapes. Although I wasn’t invited to the cool kids convention, I figured I would play along anyways. Below are ten songs from musicians that get me excited about what is possible in Atlanta. They don’t adhere to any sense of some monolithic scene because each act is pursuing their unique vision. Many of these musicians are a little too “artsy-fartsy” or “good” to get their fair share of credit from some of the hype-maker dinosaurs around the city, but hey, that’s what I’m here for. Of course I’m leaving out a ton of other great ATLiens, but I think this is a pretty good litmus test to determine if this blog is for you because this is what Atlanta music means to me:

Untied States : I’ll Prove You Wrong (Again)
Slushco : Photograph
Nomem Novem : Permanent Makeup
All The Saints : Farmacia
Tree Creature : Rise Of The Bear Thing
Lee Harvey Oswald : Slore
Lid Emba : Rib Cage
Tealights : Passport
Today The Moon, Tomorrow The Sun : The Lightning Exhibit
This Piano Plays Itself : There Are Segments Of Revolving And Revolting

The last three songs on the mix are from bands all playing together at 529 tonight so I recommend you join me in attending. Also, go check out the Creative Loafing music issue and download their mixtape.

So much great Atlanta music, so little posts…

All The Saints

All The Saints @ Drunken Unicorn (6/7/08)

All The Saints have just released a couple of tasty nuggets. First, they have a new song on their myspace called “Host” from a split 7″ between them and These Arms Are Snakes. It’s a nice, laid back psych-jam. They also just released a video for “Sheffield”, a song from last year’s spectacular Fire On Corridor X:

Untied States

Untied States @ The Earl (2/20/07)

Any minute now, Untied States will be releasing their latest record, Instant Everything, Constant Nothing. You can get a preview at their myspace with 3 tracks from it up right now. There is hardly a band in this city I would claim is better than these guys, so I am very excited about this album. Untied States is pop music as art at its best. Here is video of them performing one of the new songs live, “Not Fences, Mere Masks”:

Nomen Novum

Not content with already dropping one of this year’s best albums so far in their debut full-length, November, Atlanta’s dynamic duo Nomen Novum have big plans for 2009. They have four more releases slated to drop:

Upcoming releases for 2009:

ATL GA in 5 words – lathe cut 7″ picturedisc
free digital EP no.2
Paradises – LP
split 7″ w/ Scenisk Värld

They just posted an unmastered cut from their upcoming second album on their myspace. The song is called “Paradises 3″, and it combines some lush synthy stuff with a bunch of samples of people talking and noise. The guitar driven era of November and Mantis Man is clearly long gone, but this new loop based Nomen Novum is pretty rad. Although, I’m going to drop one more golden oldie on you, the B-side to the Mantis Man 7″:

They are putting together a west coast tour for May, but you Atlanta folks can see them live in a couple of weeks (April 13) with Ohmpark favs Royal Bangs at some place I’ve never heard of called Capsule. Also, I cannot stress it enough, if you have not listened to November yet, you are seriously missing out:

Gringo Star

Gringo Star @ Smith’s (3/8/07)

The steadily touring machine that is Gringo Star recently recorded a WOXY session. You can find lots of other sessions including ones from Dead Confederate and Here We Go Magic here. Listen to this show below:

The Spooks & The Black Lips

New videos from both of these similarly contructed bands. The video for Black Lips‘ “I’ll Be With You” pours on the charm and nostalgia for a holiday heart warmer. In contrast, the Spooks‘ vid for “California Boys”, directed by their own Adam Bruneau (Kiwis), is trippy and ghoulish. Enjoy them both:

The Top 15 Best Atlanta Albums Of 2008

It’s been a banner year for the Atlanta music scene. The international success of bands like Deerhunter, Black Lips, and Mastodon over the last couple of years has put a spotlight on our city and many other artists are beginning to reap the benefits. I still believe that too many of our best and brightest are being overlooked, but that’s exactly why I do what I do. Looking back at my favourite local albums from last year, it seems this year’s class of studio work runs substantially deeper. I felt our scene is so overpopulated by albums worthy of recognition that I extended my original top 10 to a top 15 and I’m still leaving off a ton of really good records from Inside The Perimeter.

A couple of notes, there are a few local albums that have been self-released over the holidays, but I’m rolling them into consideration for next year’s list, and one album on here technically came out in the holiday season of last year. I didn’t do write-ups for this list as many of these are going to make my top LP and top EP lists in a few days, but if you are unfamiliar with any of these acts, I urge you to click on the “tags” below to see all of our posts on the artist. I know someone is gonna complain about Bradford Cox being involved with 20% of this list, but the guy is kicking ass in both quality and quantity of work, so don’t be a player hater. Live Videos: Sian Alice Group, All The Saints (10/18/08) Drunken Unicorn

Sian Alice Group

Ever since catching this show last month, I have been re-obsessed with both of these bands’ latest albums. I’ve talked about Atlanta’s All The Saints several times, but for those who haven’t jumped on the bandwagon with me yet, check this video out:

I realized I hadn’t posted much about Sian Alice Groups‘ album, 59’59, so here are a few tracks from it followed up with a couple live videos from this show:
