Corndogorama 2009: Saturday (Day 1)

All photos by Clint Miller
We got a later start yesterday than I would have liked and didn’t make it to Corndogorama until The Goldest began their set. I loved their EP, but in previous occasions thought their live show was a bit lacking. This time they sounded really good.

I got some lunch at the Australian Bakery, which has served as our Corndog home base for escaping the heat and grubbing, and then caught Sonen. Their set at last year’s corndog was lackluster, but this year it was not enjoyable at all. The vocals were very loud in the mix, and these two so called “vocalists” have no business singing. It was hard to even give the music underneath much of a chance with how bad the vocals were.

Next, Nomen Novum played one of the better live sets I’ve seen them do. They started out with some guitar loop build up songs and then moved to more electronic stuff near the end. While the duo churned out the tunes, they were joined by a dancer for this set who even contributed some neat sound effects using blades of grass.

Corndogorama 2008 Friday (Day 2)
After late starts from the Ohmpark crew all around, we raced through thick Atlanta traffic to make it in time to catch Twin Tigers. It was an intense drive across the city that included me lighting my hair on fire with a malfunctioning cigarette lighter, but we were jamming the new Sorry No Ferrari CD I picked up at their show Wednesday night, and it was the perfect soundtrack for the journey. We arrived just in time and I really loved Twin Tigers. They sort of reminded me of Deerhunter a bit. Very nice shoegazey stuff with everyone trading off vocals. Very much a highlight of the day for me.

Live Videos: One Hand Loves The Other, Strezo, Antic Clay (2/23/2007) The Drunken Unicorn
Last Saturday night I went to the Stickfigure Distribution February Showcase and caught some ATLiens. First up was Antic Clay, whose double disc album Hilarious Death Blues from last year I loved. He is a bit too country for the hipsters, but if you can get over that, he makes some great music. Next up was Strezo, who I thought did an impressive set. Frontwoman Kristin Strezo combined beautiful vocals with some strange performance art that I really dug. While I’ve had trouble getting into their album, I have to say they were really good live. One Hand Loves The Other closed out the show, and did some acoustic versions of their songs and a cover, of which I got videos below. I bought their remix album after the show and it is very cool. They will be at The Star Bar tonight, so you should check it out.

What The Hell Am I Listening To?!?
ATLiens for today:
Antic Clay
Antic Clay, aka Michael Bradley, is the former front man of Atlanta Gothic Country band MYSSOURI. I’ve been jamming this incredible double disc constantly since getting a copy. Hilarious Death Blues is a really stand out album of 2007 to me mostly because it takes a genre I have little interest in and enthralls me. Almost every song on this hour and a half plus piece of work is gold:

Jupiter Watts
The Jupiter Watts‘ newest release, their self-titled LP, is a big step up for these guys. The more I listen to this album, the more I love it. You can tell how much attention to detail they put into every song. Check it out:
Parade
The newest release from one of my favourite Atlanta bands, The Answer Me EP, sees this bands continuing to realize its amazing potential. Beautiful songwriting plus brilliant execution. If you’ve yet to look into this 4-piece, now is the time.
Go see these artists in the ATL:
Parade will be at ISP Space August 24th
Jupiter Watts will be at Lenny’s September 8th
Antic Clay will be at The Earl September 28th
