Ohmpark Mixtape #5: Holiday Chillout Mix
For this mix, I worked hard to pick out the very best holiday songs I could find from the artists we heart and put them together in a dreamy, surreal, maybe creepy sort of overall piece. For instance, Evangelicals have a Christmas song b-side from somewhere, but there’s something more special about “Snowflakes” from The Evening Descends that just sets the mood I’m going for much more appropriately. I hope you enjoy, and happy holidays to all of you!
Au : I’ll Be Home For Christmas
Bodies Of Water w/ No Small Kindness : O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
Snowden : White Christmas
Atlas Sound : Requiem For All The Lonely Teenagers With Passed Out Moms
My Morning Jacket : Silent Night
Death Cab For Cutie : Christmas (Baby Please Come Over)
Evangelicals : Snowflakes
Deerhoof : Little Drummer Boy
Sufjan Stevens : O Holy Night
Low : Blue Christmas

A Random Mp3 Trilogy (Atlas Sound, Beirut, Diplo/Radiohead)
Yesterday instead of receiving my pre-ordered Microcastle LP, I was informed that the vinyl release is being pushed back to early December. Lame. But, I have a digital copy of it and Weird Era Cont. that i am listening to until then, so it’s ok. If you pay any attention around here, you know that I clearly love it already, but I will have a full review next week on the double album and the Halloween show in a Deerhunter super-post. For now, I give you one of two new Atlas Sound Halloween dances you can get here. See you Friday night:
A new Beirut single has appeared in blog land. While I do love some good European gypsy music when I’m in the right mood, I’ve never been able to fully jump on the Beirut bandwagon. I do like both full lengths, but that sort of stuff is a bit one dimensional and i can’t ever seem to stay interested for very long. This new single sees Zach Condon taking things in an electronic direction, which I’ve discovered is what he was doing pre-Beirut. I’m not sure if I’m completely sold on this direction either, but this single has certainly caught my ear:
(Correction: this single is a year old and I had missed it, but it’s still interesting)
Beirut : My Night With The Prostitute From Marseille
Diplo had a remix in Radiohead‘s “Reckoner” contest, but he wasn’t quite finished with it. So he recently reworked his remix. The result is very impressive. He has a new album out today and he’ll be at The Masquerade November 10th.
Radiohead : Reckoner (Diplo remix V.2)

New Atlas Sound Goodies

Atlas Sound @ Drunken Unicorn (2/19/2008)
The prolific Bradford Cox has returned from his Atlas Sound tour opening for Stereolab, and he came back bearing gifts. First, a new song and a new micromix earlier this week for some seasonal cheer. Now he just dropped the Maybe Logic Virtual 7″, so go get that. Also, Souther Shelter has the entire Atlas Sound show at the 40 Watt from a couple of weeks ago. Bradford Cox did these performances solo, as opposed to with a touring group like he did earlier this year. Go get that show in MP3 format here or in FLAC format here. You can also see great photos of that Athens show from our friend Mike White up on Pitchfork.
I’m getting more excited about the Deerhunter Halloween show at Variety Playhouse by the minute. If you can’t wait that long, Deerhunter is playing Athens Friday night at The 40 Watt for the Chunklet Magazine 15th Anniversay show (Mastodon plays the second night of it). Jam something:
Atlas Sound : Airedales (from Maybe Logic Virtual 7″)
Atlas Sound : Logos (live from 9-27-08)

I’ve been wanting to see a Liars show for forever, so I’m excited about that too. Here is the entire Radiohead Glastonbury 2003 set to get you hyped up for this week’s biggest event:
Before I get into the rest of what is going on this week, I’m gonna hit you with a bit of last week. Here is Genghis Tron from last Tuesday night:
Last Thursday our crew hit up the Fuck Yesss Le Castle Vania birthday bash at The Drunken Unicorn and had a blast:

SXSW 2008 Day 4/Wrap-Up
Ok, I promise this is our last SXSW post. Most Likely. Anyways, the last day of the fest started with us sleeping in a bit later than normal, but we made it in time to catch Plants And Animals at an Urban Outfitters next to UT campus. They rocked it out:
After a long hike back to the main strip, Biggie C and I split up. He went to catch Dead Confederate, who ended up using almost all of their set doing cover of Sonic Youth‘s “Diamond Sea”. I went and caught Sea Wolf:

The Humpday Catch-Up
Ok, time for the best of about 3 weeks of music news I have been slacking on. Let’s begin with festivals, since that’s all we’ve covered lately.
Lollapalooza has yet to release the official line-up, but the rumours have it looking like potentially the best fest of the summer. Here is what the good folks at the Lolla message board have complete with a source for each rumour:

The Hometown Hottness: Atlas Sound
Last week we caught the Atlas Sound show at The Drunken Unicorn (2/19/08). For those who don’t know yet, Atlas Sound is the solo project of Deerhunter‘s Bradford Cox. He just released his first full-length album, Let The Blind Lead those Who Can See But Cannot Feel, but it is far from the first material he has put out under the Atlas Sound name. On his blog, Cox regularly puts out material he makes over a weekend, or old stuff he did when he was a kid, or all sorts of interesting music available to everyone for free. To me, his blog is a revolutionary medium for musicians. While there certainly have been plenty of extremely prolific artists before him, Bradford is able to have a much more intimate experience with his audience, regularly giving away his material to his fans directly, and so far, there is no one else who is pulling this off so successfully. As the Internet continues to steer the world of music into interesting directions, Mr. Cox has embraced these trends and utilized them to enhance his art.
What’s even better is that almost all of his material that I have listened to in this way is good. I’m still jamming out the Orange Ohms Glow EP constantly that he put on his site weeks ago. The new proper LP is stunning too, a very different beast than Cryptograms. Click here to read the entire post…
