Broken Social Scene, Land Of Talk @ Variety Playhouse (11/19/08)
Last night’s show was epic. I arrived early to get up close, and so did a lot of high school kids. Land Of Talk was as good as i had anticipated. Broken Social Scene were better than I expected. After such short sets at Bonnaroo, they played about 2 and a half hours and it never got old. At one point, their Do Make Say Think member had the saxophonist play the melody to some recording of a woman speaking and it was pretty interesting. The Land Of Talk chick played the random BSS vocalist role well. Brendan Canning was rocking out so hard I couldn’t get a decent picture of him. I wish they had played more songs off of Kevin Drew‘s solo album, but they weren’t short on jams I loved. Overall, one of the decade’s best bands played a live show that was just as awesome as their albums. Videos and photos from last night:

Wednesday Night In The A: Broken Social Scene, Land Of Talk

Land Of Talk (12/15/06)
Tonight’s BSS, LOT show is sold out, but for those of you going, I have a little preview.I finally listened to the new Land of Talk album last night and it is pretty good. It’s not anything really special, just some nice music that will probably make for a great opener. Here’s two tracks I like:
Land Of Talk : Give Me Back My Heart Attack
Also, here are a ton of BSS videos to get you in the mood:
“Cause = Time”:
“Anthems For A Seventeen-Year-Old Girl”:

What Up In The ATL?
This is one of the last big weeks for shows this year, and the biggest show is Broken Social Scene Wednesday night at Variety Plahouse. Tickets were still available at the time of this post, but I would suspect this will sell out at any moment. Friday has a ton of great concerts, but I highly recommend catching Castanets at The Drunken Unicorn. And while I rarely mention Athens shows in my listings, the Danielson show at the 40 Watt eclipses anything else going on in this state Saturday night.
Best Shows in Atlanta November 17 – 23:
Tuesday:
Fag Static, The Sunglasses, Drunkdriver, Skin Problems, High Marks @ WonderRoot
Wednesday:
Broken Social Scene, Land Of Talk @ Variety Playhouse

So Many Records To Buy
Yesterday was a massive record release date. Here’s the list of the interesting ones, and while I’m only halfway through this list currently, I’ve yet to find one that isn’t good:
Marnie Stern: This Is It…
Deerhoof: Offend Maggie
Department Of Eagles: In Ear Park
Antony And the Johnsons: Another World EP
Lambchop: OH (Ohio)
Land Of Talk: Some Are Lakes
Castanets: City OF Refuge
Annuals: Such Fun
El Guincho: Alegranza
Rosebuds: Life Like
if you’re looking for a physical place to walk into and buy records like these, you could go to my favourite shop, Criminal Records in Little Five Points. From Tomorrow to Sunday they will be having a 25% sale on most items to get ready for the move next week to their new location. Criminal Records will still be in Little Five Points, just in a place 3 times the size of the old store over at 1154-A Euclid Avenue NE, Atlanta, GA 30307 between Bang-On and The Porter Bar. It’s even going to have a full stage inside for in-store performances. It’s unclear what’s going on with the old location, as before i had heard rumours they were going to keep that for comics and games, but it now seems like they are taking everything to the new place.
That’s not the only record store that moved, as Ella Guru, a joint I had heard about but never seen, is now in a new location as well near Inman Park/L5P. I really haven’t been to too many Atlanta record store outside of Criminal, Wax ‘n’ Facts, and Vacation. And all of those old rave/techno record stores that don’t exist anymore. I hear Decatur CD is cool, but I rarely go to Decatur. Are there any other cool record shops in Atlanta I’m missing?
Anyways, here’s some classic performances at the old Criminal Records store:

What The Hell Am I Listening to?!?
Brendan Canning (Toronto, Canada)
I feel like this album and the Kevin Drew album from last year aren’t really getting quite their due on the interwebs just because they are solo albums and not proper Broken Social Scene records. I have been listening to a whole bunch of BSS lately, and I think that I almost like this and Spirit If… better than their older stuff because their songwriting has become so much more mature and refined. I just feel like there is no fat on these two records and that they are playing completely to their individual strengths. I might change my mind on this tomorrow, but either way, Something For All Of Us.. should not be overlooked.

Takka Takka (Brooklyn, New York)
When I first heard of this band, I didn’t really give them a fair shake because they were always tied to Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (who helped these guys get big and their drummer produced this album) whom I don’t really like. But after enough recommendations from folks, I finally picked up their latest, Migration, and it is fantastic. Takka Takka do a really great job of incorporating interesting influences and creating an “art-rock” sound that is wholly poppy and accessible. You really need to check this out:

The New Year (Ithica, NY/Dallas, TX)
The New Year are a band I wasn’t really aware of until this recent self-titled album, but apparently this pair of brothers have been making great music for a really long time, including their former project in the ’90s called Bedhead. I have yet to emerse myself in their back catalog, but this album masters the simple, pretty, and perfect ideal reminiscent of bands like Deathcab, Grandaddy, and Built To Spill. I like how many of the songs themselves contain great, concise jams that only once push them past 4 minutes. This album is the paradigm of doing more with less.

Bonnaroo 2008 Sunday (Day 4 And Wrap-Up): We ‘Roo Victoriously
After only a few hours of sleep in the hot sun in my van, I was exhausted both in body and spirit. But no matter how much heat, how many beers, how little sleep, or how bad my body aches, there is no slowing down at a party this serious. So it was time to finish this thing with a win.
I barely made it in time to see Broken Social Scene‘s first set at the Sonic Stage. They did three songs from You Forgot It In People and their pro-Obama rally song in both pro- and anti-bong forms. You can download the show here.
After that we headed to The Other Tent to see Ladytron. I had very little familiarity with this band prior to seeing them, but I thought they were pretty cool. This is definitely not a style of music I could get into deep, but very much something worth seeing. Click here to read the entire post…

Live Review: Broken Social Scene @ Bonnaroo
One of my favorite bands making music right now, Broken Social Scene, played two awesome sets at Bonnaroo. I could not have been more psyched about their second set closer, the bombastic, three-fake-endings jam out, It’s All Gonna Break.
Part 1:
