[Mp3] Book Club: “Love Like Parachutes” (Live)
Folk outfit Book Club have followed up one of Atlanta’s most critically acclaimed records this year, Ghost, with a free EP of a live broadcast last month on AM 1690. The EP features two songs from Ghost, as well as a previously unreleased track, all performed live. Give it a listen:

[Mp3] Book Club: “Meal Of Dreams”
Ghost, the debut record from Robbie Horlick’s new project Book Club, comes out next week (August 2). With Book Club, Horlick has put away the indie rock of Cassavetes in favour of a forthright folk approach, enlisting the aid of local talents such as Oryx & Crake‘s Matt Jarrard and vocalist Leigh Anne Macquarrie. The result is a heart-felt and beautifully crafted collection of ten songs that is not only Horlick’s most remarkable release to date, but also one of the best records that will come out of Atlanta this year. Book Club‘s release show is at the Earl August 4th, and here’s a track from Ghost:

[Mp3] Cassavetes: “If I Had Eyes”
I’m still catching up on all of the local records released while I was on hiatus, but one of the better ones to drop during that time was Cassavetes‘ newest, Faja Blues. Robert Horlick has this raw, emotional, almost magical quality to his music that seems unquantifiable yet potent. You can stream and then purchase the entire record below, but here’s a cut from it to preview:

Corndogorama 2008 Sunday (Day 4 and Wrap-Up)
Corndogorama 2008 was called “The Year Of the Mustard King”, but it should have been called “The Year of the Crybaby Hipster Haters”. I’ll get to that shortly, but first my Sunday experience. It seemed every day involved a high speed race across the city to arrive in time to catch a specific band, and today’s band that began playing just as I arrived was Lazer/Wulf. This instrumental metal power trio from Athens brought it hard and dirty. Their on-stage demeanor was subtly hilarious while displaying some serious musical prowess. They were a great start to a fun day:

Friday night I’m going to the 11:11 Teahouse to catch 13 Day Mission, Beatrix Kiddo, and Miles From Pangea. I’m working on a piece about these great bands that will be out in the next couple days and I highly recommend checking this one out:
Saturday night is an ATL superstar supernight:
Enon, Howlin Rain, All Night Drug Prowling Wolves, Nomen Novem (featuring members of Moorish Idols) are at The Drunken Unicorn.
The Mourdella (Jessica Juggz‘s band) CD Release show with Chopper (featuring Colin Mee of Deerhunter), The Coathangers and West End Motel (featuring Brett Hinds of Mastodon and Tom Cheshire of All Night Drug Prowling Wolves) is at The Earl. Looks like Tom Cheshire is gonna have a busy night.
