Festival Updates: Bonnaroo Additions, Lollapalooza Lineup, Coachella Happened

Bonnaroo

Bonnaroo has decided to jump into the “curating” game that All Tomorrow’s Parties has made so popular. The are letting David Byrne pick the lineup for one stage on the evening of Friday June 12. He has chosen the following acts to play it:

Santigold
Dirty Projectors
Ani Difranco
St. Vincent
Katzenjammer

Most of those acts were already on the lineup, but Dirty Projectors is an addition, and a pretty badass one at that. What is unclear to me right is what part of the “evening” these acts would play. They seem an unlikely group for late night, although that would be cool. Maybe Bonnaroo will actually have something else going on during the headliner spot. By the way we are only 50 days away from this, I’m starting to get excited.

Lollapalooza

Lollapalooza has announced its lineup and it is looking very similar to Bonnaroo’s outside of the headliners. Check it out:

Festival Updates: Pitchfork, Lollapalooza, Coachella, ATP NY

There have been some festival happenings lately, so i’m going to wrap them all up for you here. First, Pitchfork Music Festival announced their initial lineup.

Friday:

Tortoise
Yo La Tengo
The Jesus Lizard
Built To Spill

Saturday:

The National
Pharoahe Monch
The Pains Of Being Pure Heart

Sunday:

Grizzly Bear
The Walkmen
Vivian Girls

it’s a great start. Instead of doing the ATP “Don’t Look Back” thing they have done in past years where bands perform one of their classic albums, this year they are changing up the format. Everyone who buys a ticket gets to vote on songs they want the Friday night bands to play, and the bands will tailor their setlists accordingly. The fest is going down in Chicago July 17-19 and tickets go on sale this Friday.

Pitchfork Fest website

With just 36 days until Coachella 2009 kicks off, they have made some lineup changes. First, Amy Winehouse has dropped off. Did anyone really believe she was going to show up for this? Also, they added a few key bands:

The Chemical Brothers
The Orb
Devendra Banhart
Murder City Devils
Etienne De Crecy
Busy P

It’s going down April 17-19 in Indio, California and tickets to this are still available:

Coachella website

There is no official word yet on this year’s Lollapalooza, but The Chicago Tribune is claiming that the headliners will include:

Depeche Mode
Beastie Boys
Jane’s Addiction

The Chicago based fest is happening August 7-9. Early bird tickets go on sale March 31, but I’ve heard rumours of $60 tickets available this week:

Lollapalooza website

Finally, New York’s ATP fest has quietly added some more bands to the lineup, including Akron/Family, Melvins, and The Jesus Lizard, making the current lineup look like this:

Friday:

The Jesus Lizard
Suicide – Performing Suicide (1st LP)
Dirty Three – Performing Ocean Songs
The Drones – Performing Wait Long By The River And The Bodies Of Your Enemies Will Float By
David Cross

Saturday:

Animal Collective
Panda Bear
Melvins
El-P
Dead Meadow
Akron Family
Sleepy Sun
Black Dice

Sunday:

Coachella 2008

April 25th-27th in Indio, Ca., Coachella returns. The headliners are a bit baffling to me (Jack Johnson is headlining both Coachellas? Seriously?) and overall it is a little off the mark from their usual ridiculously amazing line-ups, but this is still a deep list of great artists. Tickets go on sale this Friday for $269 plus fees. I really want to go, but with a Coachella East (with Radiohead supposedly headlining), the new Vineland, Lollapalooza, Pitchforkfest, ACLFest, and Bonnaroo with the chance to rival this line-up, it is going to be difficult to make it west for this one. Chances I Go now: 40%.

Coachella Rumors

According to the New York Times, the promoters of the Coachella festival will be having an east coast festival this year in August:

The new festival, tentatively scheduled for Aug. 8 through Aug. 10, is to be presented by the promoter AEG and its Goldenvoice subsidiary. A competing event, the Vineland Music Festival, held by C3 Presents and Festival Republic, a unit of the concert giant Live Nation, is scheduled from Aug. 8 to Aug. 10 in Vineland, N.J. The band Radiohead and the singer-songwriter Jack Johnson have been mentioned as headliners at the Liberty State Park event, though a lineup has not been announced. Representatives for AEG declined to comment.

Also a preliminary lineup for Coachella is up on Brooklyn Vegan. It is as follows:

Death Cab for Cutie
The Breeders
Justice
Jens Lekman
Junkie XL
The Verve
UNKLE
Cold War Kids
Chromeo
Autolux
Spiritualized
Portishead
VHS or Beta
Dan Deacon
Brett Dennen
The Cinematic Orchestra
Battles
Kid Sister
Crystal Castles
Louis XIV

This is great news for festival lovers everywhere. I have never made it to Coachella myself so I am really excited that I will have multiple choices for Goldenvoice fests this year. I may skip Coachella since I’m going to SXSW but the east coast festival sounds promising and I’ll probably be deciding between it, Lollapalooza, Virgin, Austin City Limits, and Vineland this year. Damn it’s good to have choices!

2008 Festivals Preview

After the end of the year best of lists are done for and the holidays are over, it’s the season for rampant speculation about who is playing what festival. The fun rumors this year include Metallica and Led Zeppelin at Bonnaroo and My Bloody Valentine at Coachella. Here at Ohmpark, we heart festivals and will be keeping you informed on all of these developments. Here are the fests I’m looking forward to:
