[VIdeo] Dead Confederate: The Making Of ‘Sugar’

Dead Confederate‘s newest album, Sugar, hits stores August 24th, but you can download a song from it called “Giving It All Away” featuring J Mascis for free here:

If you’re looking for a guest guitar solo on your album, it’s hard to top J Mascis. I’m very interested to hear the rest. They will be playing the Buckhead Theater July 31 with Deer Tick, and here is short video about the making of Sugar:

Sunday Night In The A: Dead Confederate, Mice In Cars, Living Rooms, Blastoids

It is a great day for checking out local music in Atlanta. Corndogorama closes out tonight with Dead Confederate and they just did a Laundro Matinee session that you can check out here. After that, there are two great options for the afterparty. Mice In Cars are playing The Earl right down the street. I’ve been listening to their newest album, 53 Bicycles and a Dead Man, and have been enjoying it more and more with each listen. It is very raw and the vocalist is definitely an acquired taste, but the record is a great combination of sweet instrumental jams and post-punk intensity. The other afterparty option tonight sees one of my favourite DIY venues return in a new location in Reynoldstown with a great lineup. I Can Fly House part duex showcases Living Rooms, Siddhartha, and Ohmpark favourite Murfreesboro, Tennessee’s Blastoids. One of Blastoids‘ members, Shit Wolf, did a remix of a Living Rooms song that I posted below. Get directions to that show here. Go see some bands!

Blastoids : Morning Light
Living Rooms : How We Do It (Shit Wolf remix)
Mice In Cars : Doors Do Not Rebound Or Spring Back
Dead Confederate : It Was A Rose (Laundro Matinee Session)

Video: Dead Confederate “Diamond Sea” (Sonic Youth Cover)

Dead Confederate @ The Earl (6/7/08)

This video is edited down way shorter than the 20 minute song normally sprawls, but it is a nice taste of Dead Confederate covering Sonic Youth from SXSW this year. I’ve still yet to catch them do this live in the many Dead Confederate shows I’ve caught, but maybe they will do it again at tomorrow night’s show at The Earl. It appears you can still score a free ticket by going here.

Since that video is a bit of a tease, here is full audio of them covering “Diamond Sea” from a show last year in Athens. You can get the entire show full of Sonic Youth covers here.

Dead Confederate Ticket/Record Giveaway!!!

Dead Confederate @ The Earl 6/7/08

The Dead Confed‘ boys have returned home this week after crazy touring, and will be at The Earl Friday night. After that they will be hitting the road yet again for their first UK tour with A Place To Bury Strangers and then even doing some dates with Dinosaur Jr and some yet to be announced summer fest dates. These Georgia boys are blowing up so hard that their single “The Rat” is currently charting in Alternative Rock radio top 40.

Unfortunately it seems Summerbirds In The Cellar have canceled for Friday, but Dead Confederate will be joined by two great locals, Twin Tigers and Morning State, for their homecoming. We are giving away three pairs of tickets for that show, and a copy of their debut full-length, Wrecking Ball, to each winner.

So here is how the contest works. Some time on Thursday, an announcement will appear in our “News And Updates” section with an email address. The first three people to send an email to that address will get the tickets. I will announce that the email address is available on the Ohmpark twitter account as soon as I put it up, so anyone following me on Twitter will have a leg up to grab the prize. You can follow me on twitter here:

So good luck, and even if you don’t win out, you should still hit up The Earl Friday night for an instant classic performance.

The Top 15 Best Atlanta Albums Of 2008

It’s been a banner year for the Atlanta music scene. The international success of bands like Deerhunter, Black Lips, and Mastodon over the last couple of years has put a spotlight on our city and many other artists are beginning to reap the benefits. I still believe that too many of our best and brightest are being overlooked, but that’s exactly why I do what I do. Looking back at my favourite local albums from last year, it seems this year’s class of studio work runs substantially deeper. I felt our scene is so overpopulated by albums worthy of recognition that I extended my original top 10 to a top 15 and I’m still leaving off a ton of really good records from Inside The Perimeter.

A couple of notes, there are a few local albums that have been self-released over the holidays, but I’m rolling them into consideration for next year’s list, and one album on here technically came out in the holiday season of last year. I didn’t do write-ups for this list as many of these are going to make my top LP and top EP lists in a few days, but if you are unfamiliar with any of these acts, I urge you to click on the “tags” below to see all of our posts on the artist. I know someone is gonna complain about Bradford Cox being involved with 20% of this list, but the guy is kicking ass in both quality and quantity of work, so don’t be a player hater. Here is the best Atlanta music of 2008:
