What The Hell Am I Listening To?!?

While I tend to keep the conversation around here on progressive, forward looking artists, I can still appreciate a more conservative, retro approach when it’s done well. Here are three local examples that can dig into older styles and still keep me more than interested:

Dead Confederate

Dead Confederate @ The Earl (6/7/08)

Dead Confederate‘s debut LP Wrecking Ball sees the band really define their sound. They have developed an interesting hybrid that seamlessly combines Nirvana-style ’90s with the jamminess and Rock ‘n’ Roll ethics of a band like My Morning Jacket. When you ponder the mass appeal of this mixture, it’s surprising no one has been as successful at blending the two as this until now. The only possible knock on this thing is that Dead Confederate may not be departing far enough away from their influences, but I think when you take a deeper listen, they are achieving a rather unique sound, and the album itself is an epic one. Here’s the beginning and the end of it:

A Fight To The Death

I’m not sure exactly when I got turned on to A Fight To The Death, but I had got a copy of songwriter CJ Bargamian’s (ex-Crybaby, ex-Myssouri) EP under the moniker of A Fight To The Death called End Of Continent Sadness some time ago. Written while he was in San Francicsco in 2006, I thought the album had a lot of potential but sounded more like a demo, and in fact, it sort of was. Many of the tracks from it show up reworked and improved on the full band incarnation of A Fight To The Death‘s new self-titled debut LP. AFTTD sees Bargamain’s gorgeous songwriting surrounded by a very talented band that seems to compliment him perfectly and results in a tasty flavour of nu-Americana. Although, going back and listening to the stripped down versions on End Of Continent Sadness is even more enjoyable now that I know these songs so intimately.

A Fight To The Death : Killdeer

A Fight To The Death : Old Black Chains

Long Knives

Long Knives are another local band that has been on my radar for sometime, but I just never got around to giving them a deep look until now, and I found I was missing out big time. While I wouldn’t make much of a direct comparison to Wilco, Long Knives has the same sort of depth and innate ability to get me to bite hard into a genre I would usually be uninterested in. Another reason i think this album is so good is because it is so dynamic. It hits every end of the spectrum from a beautiful, downbeat ballad song like “Fuckwit” to the unbelievably stunning jammout of the second part of “Headlong Into The Abyss”. If you have been missing out on these guys too, it’s time to give them a try:

Bonnaroo 2008 Saturday (Day 3): Thirty Epic Hours

Bonnaroo always has a momentum all its own and no matter how you imagine your weekend to go, it ends up being a completely different experience. Saturday morning I woke up around 4am in the morning after sleeping through crazy thunderstorms that wrecked our camp. Most of the people in my crew were coming back from seeing late night shows and we hung out and talked about our Friday experiences. The rain continued on and off for the rest of the morning, so I had some beers for breakfast and chilled out under our shelters that hadn’t been destroyed. I caught an hour power nap around 9am, and then headed out for the day. I walked around the campgrounds for a while taking in the atmosphere. The rain had died out mostly by then, and people were out and about in the muddy conditions.

Dead Confederate at SXSW

Two local bands that we have been hyping this year are hitting the road together tomorrow. They both do dirty, gritty, psychedelic music with a southern twang, or as I would broadly call it, “Post-Southern Rock”. Dead Confederate spent Memorial Day weekend at Sasquatch Fest and All The Saints‘ new LP, Fire On Corridor X, just came out today. Record Store Day In Atlanta: Dead Confederate, The Coathangers, Club Awesome

I spent a few hours last weekend at Criminal Records for their Record Store Day celebration. Here are the three local bands who played there that matter most:

Dead Confederate:

We’ve been talking about them for a while now around Ohmpark and the justified hype is starting to get some traction on the webs post-SXSW. Earfarm spent some time with them while they were down in Austin and has a bunch of cool material. Speaking of SXSW, you can get an entire performance here. Southern Shelter has just put up a show on their site where Dead Confederate played nothing but Sonic Youth covers at The 40 Watt in Athens earlier this year here. A sample:

Dead Confederate : Silver Rocket (Sonic Youth cover)

The Coathangers

The Coathangers quick rise to ATLien elite status last year is an interesting phenomenon, and while I’m not the biggest fan of bands getting popular in this town solely because of their stage act and attitude rather than their music, these girls back up their their brash aura with clever lyrics and catchy tunes. I stumbled across this great remix of one my favourite Coathangers songs on the ‘net last night:

The Coathangers : Parcheezie (Griff Remix ft. Fitzgerald)
Here they are doing that song last Saturday:

And Kimcriminal has one up too, she has tons of vids of in-store Criminal Record performances you an check out here.

They are also on summer tour, so go to a show:

2 May – Atlanta, GA @ The Star Bar
9 May – Atlanta, GA @ Smith’s Old Bar (500 Songs For Kids)

Club Awesome

Atlanta’s Club Awesome, known for their pool parties and “Whyte Tygre” suit, are what I would describe as in the greater post-punk/post-pop vicinity. I arrived too late to get some video of their show, but I did pick up a handmade advance copy of their debut album, and it is really good. Here’s a track:

Club Awesome : Trainwreck
They have a few shows coming up:

3 May – Atlanta, GA @ Smith’s Olde Bar (500 Songs For Kids)
25 May – Wilmington, NC @ Soapbox (We Festival)
29 June – Atlanta, GA @ Lenny’s (Corndogarama)

Video Of The Day: Dead Confederate At Langerado 2008

Langerado 2008 Day 1: Thursday

We stayed in St. Pete Beach Wednesday night to make our Thursday traveling a bit shorter. After getting to the exit around 1pm, We heard a rumour that it was taking over 4 hours waiting in line to enter the festival grounds at the last stop gas station that was bustling with activity. It turned out to be more like 2 hours, which wasn’t too bad considering everyone had to go down a one-lane road.

Langerado 2008 Preview

Langerado just released the schedule today and it looks pretty good. Here is my personalized schedule so far. If you are still on the fence whether to go to this one, I’m gonna go through some of the smaller acts that I’m really excited about. The first band on the “Swamp Stage” is right here from Altanta, Dead Confederate. I believe they are going to be one of the ATL bands that get big nationally by the end of this year (they were handpicked to open for R.E.M. at SXSW), because their new EP is really awesome. Jam this track and pick up this EP:

Dead Confederate : The Rat

Vampire Weekend is another band that is on the super-hype lately in blogland. While I enjoy their new album, I think it is one of those “good but not great”. They are just a little too gimmicky and lacking a tad bit in substance. Regardless of that, though, I’m very excited to see them live because I think they will be pretty cool to see. Check them out:

Vampire Weekend : Walcott
An album I really enjoyed from last year is !!!‘s Myth Takes. They are organic dance rock that sort of sound like a an indie-rock version of STS9 or those sorts of bands with lyrics/vocals. I’ve been wanting to catch them live for so long because I’ve heard how much fun their shows are. If 311 isn’t quite your bag, or you’ve seen them like 10 times like me, this band is really worth checking out:

!!! (chk chk chk) : Break In Case Of Anything
So, one of the biggest draws to Langerado for me is Built To Spill. They are one of my all time favourite bands. Since I have like a million BTS live shows, this seems like a good time to share one. Behold 1999-05-09 (Early Show):

1. Made Up Dreams
2. Center of The Universe
3. Kicked it In The Sun
