Ohmpark Mixtape #5: Holiday Chillout Mix

For this mix, I worked hard to pick out the very best holiday songs I could find from the artists we heart and put them together in a dreamy, surreal, maybe creepy sort of overall piece. For instance, Evangelicals have a Christmas song b-side from somewhere, but there’s something more special about “Snowflakes” from The Evening Descends that just sets the mood I’m going for much more appropriately. I hope you enjoy, and happy holidays to all of you!

Au : I’ll Be Home For Christmas
Bodies Of Water w/ No Small Kindness : O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
Snowden : White Christmas
Atlas Sound : Requiem For All The Lonely Teenagers With Passed Out Moms
My Morning Jacket : Silent Night
Death Cab For Cutie : Christmas (Baby Please Come Over)
Evangelicals : Snowflakes
Deerhoof : Little Drummer Boy
Sufjan Stevens : O Holy Night
Low : Blue Christmas

Live Videos: Deerhoof, Experimental Dental School (10/29/08) Asheville, NC

Last week I drove up to Asheville, NC to catch Deerhoof at the Grey Eagle since they weren’t coming to Atlanta. I left in prime time rush hour but was able to make it into the venue and right in front of the stage moments before the first band played. Flying, who was originally on the bill, couldn’t make it because of troubles with their transportation or something, so they had a different opening band along for this tour called Fertile Crescent. They were a guy on guitar and girl on drums, and they were good for an opening band, but there wasn’t much to it. As I was waiting for the next band, I noticed that the crowd in Asheville was extremely young. I don’t think I saw one person other than me without X’s on their hands. Also the style everyone was kicking was a weird hipster/hippie hybrid, lots of dreads and tight pants.

Experimental Dental School came on utilizing the same duo format as Fertile Crescent, except they pulled it of much more impressively. The guitarist had three outputs coming out of his guitar all running to different sets of pedals and what looked like home made amps built in suitcases. You’ll notice in the last video below, some of the members of Deerhoof came out and joined them for their final number.

Deerhoof finished out the show with maybe one of the best shows I’ve seen all year. First, they had smaller and less equipment than any 4-piece band I’ve seen. You could fit everything they brought on stage in the trunk of a hatchback. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a drummer using a minimalistic setup be so impressive. Frontwoman Satomi Matsuzak couldn’t be taller than 4 feet tall, but was full of energy jumping around and dancing while ripping some awesome bass lines. The entire band had such personality on stage, and they played everything flawlessly. Deerhoof is quickly becoming one of my favourite bands, check out some vids:

Deerhoof: “Family Of Others”

Deerhoof “Family Of Others”

What The Hell Am I Listening To?!?

Last week two artists who had an album in my top 5 from last year dropped their follow ups. These two acts exemplify the heights modern music can achieve. They are the rare sort of acts that combine virtuosity with an original, uncompromising vision. They also happen to be on the same label, Kill Rock Stars, a fact I hadn’t realized until I had pre-ordered both of their LPs. Get down with the Hottness:

Marnie Stern

I’m very glad that the bigger indie blogs are finally jumping on the Marnie Stern bandwagon, but I wish they would quit dissing her debut album as an excuse for being so late to the party. There are things I like better about Ms. Stern’s sophomore release, and things I don’t like quite as much. But those are more about preference than a discussion of quality, because so far this is two grand slams in a row from her. Maybe the most talented female musician alive:

Marnie Stern : Ruler

Marnie Stern : Roads? Where We’re Going We Don’t Need Roads

Deerhoof

I didn’t get exposed to Deerhoof until about the time I started this blog, but since discovering this amazing band, I’ve fallen totally in love with them. I’ve been digging deep into their catalogue lately and finding gem after gem. I’m still not sure exactly where I would rate their newest, Offend Maggie, among their arsenal of previous albums. But, pretty much everything Deerhoof touches turns to gold, so you would be doing yourself a disservice to miss out on their latest.

The New New: Beach House, Deerhoof, Tobacco

You can listen to the A-side of Beach House‘s upcoming 7″ that drops October 21st here:

Deerhoof has a new vidoe for “Get Born” from thier upcoming album Offend Maggie:

A member of the Pennsylvania experimental group Black Moth Super Rainbow (who is a band you really need to check out if you haven’t yet) named Tobacco just released a single from his solo album Fucked Up Friends due out October 14th:

Tobacco : Truck Sweat

A Random MP3 Tetralogy

I got four hott tracks for you:

The Raveonettes

I jumped on The Raveonettes bandwagon earlier this year after loving their newest LP Lust Lust Lust. Now they are releasing a series of 4 EPs digitally before the end of the year, starting with one that just came out this week ,The Raveonettes Remixed. You can get it for free here. A preview:

The Raveonettes : Aly, Walk With Me (Nic Endo remix)

One of the blog sensations right now is Empire Of The Sun, a pairing of two dudes from other blog sensations. Currently there is only one song available complete with a video and remixes from these guys, but I hear an album is coming soon. The song itself, though, is an all-around crowd pleaser that I think anyone should be able to enjoy:

Empire Of The Sun : Walking On A Dream

Deerhoof‘s Offend Maggie

The new Deerhoof album is dropping October 7th, and if you are one of the first 500 people to pre-order it, you get handwritten sheet music for the entire album included. Interesting first listen. If you haven’t looked into this band yet, you are seriously missing out.
