SXSW Day 2 (Thursday): I Guess I’m Gloating

All Photos by Clint Miller
We started day two with a mad dash through traffic to make it to the I Guess I’m Floating day party in time to catch Oh No Oh My. We made it moments after they began their set, and they went on to play all my favourites off of Dmitrij Dmitrij plus a new one. It was a really good first set of the day.

Next up was a band called Arizona. I have no idea how I have heard of this band, but for some reason the name sticks out to me. They turned out to be great, with some serious guitar jams. The lead singer had a really unique, weird voice that added an interesting dimension to their sound. Check it:

All Tomorrow’s Parties NY Day 3 (Sunday & Wrap-Up): I Think I’m Gonna Need A Bigger Set Of Earplugs

All Photos by Abbey Braden courtesy of ATP.
Saturday night we got back very late to our hotel so I proceeded to order vodka and cranberries by the handful and shoot as many as possible before the looming last call at the bar. I clearly overshot my target and ended up waking up Sunday with a ludicrously painful hangover to start off the day. Most of the afternoon consisted of me trying recover. It finally subsided and I was able to make it to the very end of the Mercury Rev show. As soon a I walked in the backdoor of the venue, there was like a sonic boom blast of sound from a particularly epic part of their set, and you could tell they had this soundsystem at full blast in anticipation of My Bloody Valentine. I wish I could have seen more of Mercury Rev, because the last few minutes I caught were amazing. I’m about to dig deep into their new CD and their old stuff because i wasn’t familiar with them until now.

We stuck around up front to wait for Yo La Tengo, a favourite for all of our ATP crew. The guards or somebody decided starting on Sunday that they would make everyone leave the venue between each performance and have everyone wait outside, which really seemed rather purposeless. At one point a security guard unsuccessfully tried to get the massive crowd filling an entire room to form two lines to go in and it was hilarious. The guards never cleared out the venue area again after that.
We still managed to get front row, and enjoy their top notch set. I was hoping for a full on noise jam set from Ira Kaplan, and while it ended up being a rather balanced sort of set, full of soft, pretty parts and loud, psychedelic stuff, Ira still shredded plenty enough for me. Yo La Tengo is just one of the best bands of alltime in my opinion, to still be writing relevant, amazing music and playing such impressive live shows after 24 years. Here’s video from their set:

After that, we literally ran across Kutcher’s to the second stage to catch …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead. We missed only a little bit of their great set, and I’m glad I finally caught these guys. In comparison to the rest of the mindblowing shows of Sunday, Trail Of Dead might have seemed a bit less enjoyable, but still could have been the highlight of lesser festival.

Live Review: Black Keys, Dinosaur Jr (6-21-2007) The Tabernacle
I’ve been to shows at the Tabernacles countless times but I’ve never gone to a show there early before. It was really strange being in that building with the lights on and hardly anyone there. Also, it seemed either Camel cigarettes sponsored the show or bought out the venue because they allowed smoking again and had Camel ads everywhere. We were calling it the “Camelacle”. After waiting a while up front, Dinosaur Jr came on and rocked a pretty short set. About half of the set was songs from the new album, which I like a lot. What was most interesting to me is they were playing songs from Dinosaur Jr‘s entire catalog, instead of just songs off of the albums with Lou and Murph. Unfortunately, they seemed to mess up the songs they did from post-Lou/Murph-Dino Jr, including J totally missing a part on Out There and the other guys busting out laughing. Overall though, it seemed more endearing then annoying from the listeners point of view and my 3rd show seeing the original line-up reunited was very good.
We decided to go up to the balcony for the Black Keys as we were all still tired from Bonnaroo. The Black Keys are a band that I respect but don’t really like . They are just too conventional rock ‘n’ roll for my taste, but they put on a great show and after seeing the White Stripes sound too thin as a two-piece the weekend before, the Black Keys filled out nicely and proved a two-piece can hit you hard in a live setting.

What The Hell Am I Listening To?!?
Porcupine Tree : Fear Of A Blank Planet

Porcupine Tree is a band I’ve only gotten into over the last year and i am really starting to love them. I’ve been listening to this new album over and over again. A really great concept album with some mind-blowing music, especially the almost 18-minute long Anesthetize. Pick this album up:
Buy Fear Of A Blank Planet here
I’m not sure why I had slightly lower expectations from this album, especially considering I’ve loved J Mascis‘ and Lou Barlow‘s respective recent solo work. Beyond is everything a Dinosaur Jr fan could hope for. They are in top form and every song on this rocks out. Check it:
