Ohmpark Mixtape #13: Our Favourite Songs of 2009

If you’ve been paying attention around here this year, there is no doubt you will be familiar with everything on this list, and perhaps even a little burnt out on some of these tracks. But each of these songs are strongly linked to different moments and memories I have of 2009, and they make up the ultimate soundtrack to an amazing year in music. So jam them out one last time:
Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse w/ Wayne Coyne : Revenge
Animal Collective : My Girls
Atlas Sound w/ Noah Lennox : Walkabout
The Dirty Projectors : Useful Chamber
Grizzly Bear : Two Weeks
Bat For Lashes : Daniel
Andrew Bird : Anonanimal
Here We Go Magic : Fangela
Loney, Dear : Airport Surroundings
Mew : Introducing Palace Players
St. Vincent : The Strangers
Do Make Say Think : Do
Phoenix : Lisztomania
Nomen Novum : Miracles Come True

A Random Mp3 Trilogy: Do Make Say Think, White Denim, Sufjan Stevens

It looks like Broken Social Scene family member Do Make Say Think have created yet another fantastic post-rock record. Other Truths is comprised of four long, primarily instrumental tracks named “Do”, “Make”, “Say”, and “Think”. With the coming of this album, I think it is hard to deny that DMST are one of the best ever in this genre, right up there with acts like Mogwai, Explosions In The Sky, and Godspeed You Black Emperor. This band is pretty much amazing and you would be a fool to overlook this newest release:

Fits, the new record from Austin’s White Denim, has been circulating the internets for months, but it finally became available to purchase last week. This dynamic trio has the chops to take on any jammer or shredder, the psychedelic aptitude of a sheet of acid, and the songwriting precision that rarely accompanies those previously described traits. Fits is the sort of record that will appeal both to hipsters as well as old timers that think good music stopped getting made in the ’70s, and that is quite a feat. Here’s a taste:

Ever since blowing up with Illinoise, Sufjan Stevens has been content to hang back and do guest spots and Christmas covers for this latter half of the decade. And while it appears that may not change anytime soon, he has at least finally released an epic enough piece of music to satisfy us fans for a moment. I’m not versed in knowledge of classical music, but I think this ode to The Brooklyn Queens Expressway, an instrumental album called The BQE, is pretty damn good. This track isn’t exactly representative of the album, but it’s one of my favourites from it:
Sufjan Stevens : Movement IV: Traffic Shock

Ohmpark’s Top 50 Best Albums Of 2007
2007 was an incredible year of music and there were so many albums I really liked that didn’t make this list. I noticed that most of the lists I pay attention to were very similar to one another this year as opposed to last year. Also, I’ve found myself in more of a disagreeance with those lists than last year. If there is any theme to be taken out of this list, I think it’s that I feel like too many great albums were underrated by the blogosphere elites, and that they were way in love with some albums I think are overrated. This list represents my personal assertions more so than the rest of the Ohmpark crew, but I worked hard to get every one’s opinions and influences in this thing. Feel free to comment on how much you hate or love it. I feel like every album on this is an essential one from last year, so go listen to some new music: Click here to read the entire post…

Photos: Do Make Say Think, Moorish Idols @ The Earl, Atlanta GA – 9-22-07
Saturday night was a great night to be a music lover in the A. “Queens of The Stone Age”, “Girl Talk” and “Dan Deacon”, and “Do Make Say Think” all shared the same Saturday night. The Ohmpark crew all settled on the “Do Make Say Think” show which was opened by one of our favorite local bands “Moorish Idols”. The Idols played to an already somewhat large audience which showed not everyone was there just for just the headliner. After a solid set which included a few new tunes “Do Make Say Think” was up. The Toronto band which Saturday included 8 members played a hefty set of incredible instrumental music. If you haven’t heard this post rock group with members associated with “Broken Social Scene”, do yourself a favor and pick up one of their albums.

I Heart The A
Not much blogging over the long weekend while I was out enjoying the beautiful weather and sweet events. I spent alot of time in East Atlanta including the East Atlanta Strut and the Go Funk Yourself uber-house party. The really fun weekend is mostly a blur to me and I don’t have much objective journalism for you, so here’s some tunes from some of the artists I might have seen:
Parade : Answer Me : Lunch Lady
Anna Kramer : Anna Kramer : I Can’t Take It
Elevado : This World Is On Fire : Postcard From Four Walls Down
Howlies : Howlies : Angeline
This week is fairly enormous for great shows. Tonight I’m going to see Bjork and Klaxons at the Fox. Diplo is going to be at MJQ tonight too. Wednesday night at Lenny’s is Zoroaster’s CD release party featuring Daath. Wednesday night is also the beginning of Atlantis Music Conference, Atlanta’s answer to South By Southwest. Thursday night John Vanderslice and Bishop Allen will be at The Earl. Pretty much every venue in town has an interesting show Friday night but i like the Eyedrum show with Vietnam, Random Violets, Subliminator, and Tree Creature. Saturday night is just ridiculous. Do Make Say Think and Atlanta’s Moorish Idols are going to be at The Earl. Queens Of The Stone Age are at The Tabernacle. Girl Talk and Dan Deacon are at MJQ. Then Sunday night The Apples In Stereo will be playing for free at Piedmont Park(Park Tavern).
Bjork : Volta : Wanderlust
Queens Of The Stone Age : Era Vulgaris : I’m Designer
Zoroaster : Dog Magic : Brazen Bull
Do Make Say Think : You, You’re A History In Rust : In Mind
Girl Talk : Night Ripper : Give And Go
Moorish Idols : Moorish Idols : Fer-De-Lance

What The Hell Am I Listening To?!?
Some really good stuff:
This Portland 3-piece’s Friend And Foe is quickly becoming one of my favourites of the year. Describing this band is difficult for me, a little Clouds Taste Metallic era Flaming Lips, maybe a touch of old school Modest Mouse, maybe a touch of Morphine. I don’t know. Give these tracks a listen, and if you like, go get the album because every song on this thing is great.
Explosions In The Sky

Their new album, All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone, is a great example of a band that just does their thing, and gets better and better. Many may think that this album sounds very much like most of their others, and that’s somewhat true, but some bands just do what they do masterfully, and that’s all they need to do. Sometimes a band just doesn’t have to head off into another direction (Modest Mouse comes to mind). Give a listen to a great band in their prime:
Buy Explosions In The Sky : All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone
Another great post-rock album i’ve been listening to is DMST’s You, You’re a History In Rust. Part of the Broken Social Scene extended family, these guys are really awesome. Where the new Explosions In The Sky record works to perfect an already “classic” style of post-rock, this album takes alot more liberties and avoids any derivative labels. Enjoy:
Buy Do Make Say Think : You, You’re A History In Rust
I knew when I did my top 50 List of 2006, that i would miss some albums that deserved to be on it because I had only a limited amount of time and resources. He Poos Clouds is the first one. Final Fantasy (aka Owen Pallett) is a violinist/vocalist who played with Arcade Fire on tour and even did some of the string arrangements on their new album, Neon Bible. This second full album as Final Fantasy is just simply phenonemal. You really need to get this:
