The Fiery Furnaces and White Rabbits will be hitting the Variety Playhouse tonight. I’ve been a Furnaces fan for a long time, but it’s taken me a while to get into their newest record, I’m Going Away. It is probably their most pop record to date, and it just felt too normal and ordinary at first for such a regularly strange band. But suddenly it is growing on me a lot, and even though I don’t prefer this approach from them, they have pulled it off excellently. They are playing in a different setup for this tour, plus they are turning their shows into Pro-Health Care Reform Rallies, so tonight should be interesting for sure. The midwest has been very kind to us so far. In St. Louis, TPPI played with a band called Target Market, who not only turned out to be the best band they’ve played with so far, but they were really cool, hospitable dudes that even coincidentally happened to be friends with So Many Dynamos (who I blogged about last time). We had a mini-rager at their house in southern Illinois.

Chicago was also a very fun time. Birthday celebrations, family of the band coming out, and some old friends from the ATL made the night a serious party. We ended up camping on a rooftop overlooking the city and then having our tent destroyed at five in the morning by a hurricane strength thunderstorm. So far, I’m barely getting five hours of sleep a night and fatigue is starting to set in a little bit, but we’re all pushing hard and everyone is in great spirits still. We are about to take it to Michigan shortly, but for now, here is a mini-mix of Chicago artists:

Friday morning started about 4 hours after Thursday night ended for me with the sun making things too uncomfortable for me to sleep late. I grabbed some breakfast and got an early start on the day. I got to the media area to do some blogging and listen to the media orientation speech. They laid out everything we could and couldn’t do, and none of it really seemed to effect what I’m doing. I don’t have all access, but it seems like there are lots of artists in the media area doing interviews and such, so that has been really cool. I gave the guitarist from Minus The Bear some daps before catching some shows.

First up was The Fiery Furnaces. They did a set that was very similar to the set they did at The Variety Playhouse earlier this year, except this time they had a thimble player to make it a 5 piece. It was extremely tight and heavily weighted by Widow City songs, which I love. At some point a cardboard cutout of Eleanor made its way into the crowd, followed by other cardboard cutouts that I thought at first were the rest of the band, but then I saw one of them was Bradford Cox and realized they were from the Converse ad.

PJ Harvey

Having an artist you’ve been a fan of for a long time drop an album that completely reawakens your fandom for that artist is such a cool thing. PJ and me go way back, and I had sort of come to the conclusion that maybe she was another victim of losing your edge as you get older and that the sort of music she used to make required a youthful angst to be phenomenal. That may or may not be true, but instead of trying to recapture her roots (Like her slightly unsuccessful attempt on Uh Huh Her), she went in a completely new direction with an album packed full of piano ballads. I was starting to doubt I was listening to the right album at first listen until I heard her sing the album title. It’s like since Cat Power decided to be Wynonna Judd, PJ Harvey decided to pick-up where Chan left off after You Are Free. The results are an amazing piece of work if you don’t have any pre-conceived notions of what you want to hear from her. I’ve been jamming it hard and you should too:

The Fiery Furnaces

Another musical act I used to be obsessed with but sort of fell off the bandwagon is The Fiery Furnaces. As much as I respect the art of Rehearsing My Choir, I could never really get into it. And I don’t dislike Bitter Tea, but it didn’t really do it for me either. But their newest release, Widow City, is everything i loved from this band and more. When I first discovered these guys at Coachella, I remember just being blown away by the ridiculous amount of twists and turns in the music, switching time signatures and melodies every few seconds, but still retaining a sound that contained pop sensibilities. Widow City is a return to walking between art and pop and they do it so well:
