[Mp3] From Exile: “The Great Below”
When I first learned that From Exile planned to do an album of Nine Inch Nails covers, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t all that excited. While I have an enormous amount of respect for Nine inch Nails, I don’t really enjoy their music all that much, and I’m far more interested in original art than in cover songs. But now, listening to Just Like You Imagined, I believe that doing a cover record actually allowed From Exile to explore and develop their sound more effectively. After two years of destroying the band’s original incarnation to build Monolith, and a year putting together a new band that could do the record justice, From Exile emerged an entirely different sort of act than the distinctly metal early version. It certainly wouldn’t be incorrect to label them as metal now, but by tossing away the confining nature of that genre in covering a band that commands its own unique sound, From Exile could really explore the full possibilities of this combination of musicians. Within a different set of boundaries, they actually had more creative freedom than having to adhere to the expectations of who they were before. There’s no telling where exactly this new direction will take the band, but there’s something exciting about hearing this fresh trajectory unfold. From Exile give away the physical version of the album tomorrow (Saturday, May 14) night at The Earl.
