Atlanta Hottnesses: All The Saints, Untied States, Nomen Novum, Gringo Star, Spooks, Black Lips
So much great Atlanta music, so little posts…
All The Saints

All The Saints @ Drunken Unicorn (6/7/08)
All The Saints have just released a couple of tasty nuggets. First, they have a new song on their myspace called “Host” from a split 7″ between them and These Arms Are Snakes. It’s a nice, laid back psych-jam. They also just released a video for “Sheffield”, a song from last year’s spectacular Fire On Corridor X:
Untied States

Untied States @ The Earl (2/20/07)
Any minute now, Untied States will be releasing their latest record, Instant Everything, Constant Nothing. You can get a preview at their myspace with 3 tracks from it up right now. There is hardly a band in this city I would claim is better than these guys, so I am very excited about this album. Untied States is pop music as art at its best. Here is video of them performing one of the new songs live, “Not Fences, Mere Masks”:
You should own both of their previous, essential records:
Buy Retail Detail
Buy Ineffable, By Design
Nomen Novum
Not content with already dropping one of this year’s best albums so far in their debut full-length, November, Atlanta’s dynamic duo Nomen Novum have big plans for 2009. They have four more releases slated to drop:
Upcoming releases for 2009:
ATL GA in 5 words – lathe cut 7″ picturedisc
free digital EP no.2
Paradises – LP
split 7″ w/ Scenisk Värld
They just posted an unmastered cut from their upcoming second album on their myspace. The song is called “Paradises 3″, and it combines some lush synthy stuff with a bunch of samples of people talking and noise. The guitar driven era of November and Mantis Man is clearly long gone, but this new loop based Nomen Novum is pretty rad. Although, I’m going to drop one more golden oldie on you, the B-side to the Mantis Man 7″:
Download Room For Rent for free
They are putting together a west coast tour for May, but you Atlanta folks can see them live in a couple of weeks (April 13) with Ohmpark favs Royal Bangs at some place I’ve never heard of called Capsule. Also, I cannot stress it enough, if you have not listened to November yet, you are seriously missing out:
Gringo Star

Gringo Star @ Smith’s (3/8/07)
The steadily touring machine that is Gringo Star recently recorded a WOXY session. You can find lots of other sessions including ones from Dead Confederate and Here We Go Magic here. Listen to this show below:
Track Listing:
Tonight The Moon Doesn’t Matter
Ask Me Why

Come On Now
Rebel Kind
The Spooks & The Black Lips
New videos from both of these similarly contructed bands. The video for Black Lips‘ “I’ll Be With You” pours on the charm and nostalgia for a holiday heart warmer. In contrast, the Spooks‘ vid for “California Boys”, directed by their own Adam Bruneau (Kiwis), is trippy and ghoulish. Enjoy them both:

The Top 15 Best Atlanta Albums Of 2008
It’s been a banner year for the Atlanta music scene. The international success of bands like Deerhunter, Black Lips, and Mastodon over the last couple of years has put a spotlight on our city and many other artists are beginning to reap the benefits. I still believe that too many of our best and brightest are being overlooked, but that’s exactly why I do what I do. Looking back at my favourite local albums from last year, it seems this year’s class of studio work runs substantially deeper. I felt our scene is so overpopulated by albums worthy of recognition that I extended my original top 10 to a top 15 and I’m still leaving off a ton of really good records from Inside The Perimeter.
A couple of notes, there are a few local albums that have been self-released over the holidays, but I’m rolling them into consideration for next year’s list, and one album on here technically came out in the holiday season of last year. I didn’t do write-ups for this list as many of these are going to make my top LP and top EP lists in a few days, but if you are unfamiliar with any of these acts, I urge you to click on the “tags” below to see all of our posts on the artist. I know someone is gonna complain about Bradford Cox being involved with 20% of this list, but the guy is kicking ass in both quality and quantity of work, so don’t be a player hater. Here is the best Atlanta music of 2008:
15. The Goldest : The Goldest
14. Gringo Star : All Y’all
13. Atlas Sound : Things I’ll Miss
12. Today The Moon, Tomorrow The Sun :
The Lightning Exhibit11. No Face : You Mean So Much To Me
10. Nomen Novum : Mantis Man 7″

9. Parade : Ghosts
8. The Liverhearts : Ornament

7. Lid Emba & Bobcrane : We Substitute
Radiance
6. All The Saints : Fire On Corridor X
5. Dead Confederate : Wrecking Ball
4. Atlas Sound : Let The Blind Lead Those
Who Can See But Cannot Feel
3. This Piano Plays Itself : This Piano Plays
Itself

2. Slushco : When I Met The Boss Of Nova

1. Deerhunter : Microcastle/Weird Era Cont.

An Atlanta Mp3 Trilogy (Gringo Star, All The Saints, Tealights)

Gringo Star @ Corndogorama 2008
Gringo Star released their debut full-length All Y’all yesterday, but I can’t seem to find a single place online to purchase it. Luckily I went to their record release show and snagged a copy there. I was curious about what direction their sound would go in post-A Fir-Ju Well, their former namesake. All Y’all sees them give up a bit of their psychedelia for a more in-fashion garage rock sound. I certainly don’t prefer that trend, but they pull it off so well that I can’t complain. Check it:

All The Saints @ The Earl (6/7/08)
All The Saints‘ debut album, Fire On Corrridor X has been released on their new label, Touch and Go. I already discussed this album earlier, but it is one of my favourite albums to come out of Atlanta all year so I figure it is worth revisiting. Some local publications around here have complained about Ben H. Allen’s production on this thing, but I think the production is one of the primary reasons this record stands out to me. I know that many other Atlanta bands have never heard of dynamics, but that’s a bad thing. I’m about to grab this one on vinyl and recommend you do the same:
Buy Fire On Corridor X: [MP3] [CD] [LP]

Tealights @ Drunken Unicorn (10/9/08)
Tealights is the new project for three of the four members of the now defunct One Hand Loves The Other. I caught them live opening for Evangelicals and I thought they sounded great. They recently added Sorry No Ferrari guitarist Brett Kelly on drums, so I can’t wait to see how that sounds. They’ve posted some demos on their myspace, and while they are probably more sketches than finished products, they reveal a ton of potential from a new band figuring out their sound. Here’s my favourite so far:
Tealights : Passport (demo version)

Corndogorama Video: Gringo Star
I’ve been a big fan of these guys since the A Fir-Ju Well days, so it was great to see them again after not seeing them for a long time. Too bad things ended disastrously.

Corndogorama 2008 Saturday (Day 3)
Josh and I have both been covering Corndogorama, so we’re going to tag team you with yesterday’s events complete with photos from Biggie C:
JW: Following a super-charged Friday night, I managed to make it back to corndog land in time to catch Morning State. As usual, they put on a solid performance. “Never So Strange” kept the truly devoted satisfied. I listened to them through my hangover – something not afforded to lesser bands.
SK: I didn’t make it to the fest until Thy Mighty Contract had taken the stage. This ATL supergroup certainly combined the best elements of their respective sounds into a serious sonic assault. I wish I could have heard a few more songs from them, but good Corndog sets always leaving you wanting more.

Since Untied States canceled due to some legal troubles, I ran down to East Atlanta and grabbed some grub at the Australian bakery and Josh went to see the Corndog Eating Contest.
JW: OK – that Boone guy showed up again with the belt just to show it off. 17 corndogs in 7 minutes. This anomaly has no competition. I was waiting for the little girl about a third of his size to spew when she got 5 of them down and started kneeling on the ground.
SK: Upon my return we caught Sonen. Their show was ok, but not anything that grabbed me. They struck me as a par, average Atlanta band. Not bad, but not good. Right after that it was time for A Armada and the explosions of sound washing across everyone’s ears was unstoppable.
