Tokyo Police Club

Day three started just like day two, early and very hot. By this time I was already very sunburnt, perpetually hungover for days, and tired, but it was time to march on. Summerbirds In The Cellar kicked off the day with a set that started before noon. Hardly 15 people were there at the beginning, but by the time they left the stage the field was packed. It was great to finally hear this band on a good quality sound system. I have been hyping this Floridian band since I discovered them at Corndogorama last year, and I will continue to do so because they one of the best bands in the southeast US right now. They just floor me every time I hear them:

I started out the day hanging out with my neighbors at camp, who were all cool peeps. It turned out some of them were also there as press. It took me a while to secure my creds and power up my equipment, so the first band I saw was Deerhunter. The core members performed as a 4-piece and they played 2 new songs in a set that was heavy in older stuff. It was a very good show that finished off with a beautiful noise jam. The second video below is the first new song they played, but to perfectly honest, I thought it was a little boring. The other new one was great though:

I got a late start because i stayed at the Star Bar too late the night before i left. After a long, boring drive down, I arrived and only had to wait in traffic for about 10 minutes. That was nice, but then i had to lug all of my camping stuff from the parking lot area to the campsite area, and that wasn’t very fun. I did score a really sweet spot about a one minute walk to the front gate of the festival area. This fest is very small in scale, similar to Atlanta’s Echo Project in size.

I was unable to get my press credentials due to arriving too late, so I got to experience things as a mere mortal for the first night. I was pushing hard all day to try and make it in time for Tokyo Police Club, but they had some medical emergency and their set has been moved to the already ridiculously stacked Sunday lineup. Instead, i caught Grand Buffet, who were hip-hop that seemed to be aimed at a high school/not-great-taste-in-music crowd. It’s weird to hear rappers getting all political and dissing Republicans now that they are out of office. It doesn’t seem quite as pertinent.

After that I caught Girl Talk, which was the last act of the night. The set was chalked full of typical Girl Talk mashups, and I’ve realized that over time they are not as enjoyable to me as they once were. Even with 50 people on stage dancing around, it didn’t really hold my attention for the entire hour plus set. Here is a video of the beginning of his set:

Sasquatch 2009 is going down Memorial Day weekend (May 23-25) in what I hear is the US’s most beautiful venue, The Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington. I’ve been wanting to hit this fest for a long time, and maybe this will be the year. Tickets go on sale next Saturday (Feb 28) and 3 day passes range from $154.50 to $229.50.

Harvest of Hope festival had to deal with a ton of lineup subtractions and additions due to Langerado getting cancelled, so here is the 411:

Head organizer and No Idea Records employee Ryan Murphy had this to say:

“Harvest of Hope Fest is going strong and looking forward to the event. All the event staff have been working into the night to make this event awesome. We were bummed to hear about Langerado canceling and wish best of luck to all that were involved. The canceling of Langerado had a few affects on our festival. First, unfortunately, the following bands had to cancel: Broken Social Scene, Devotchka, the Faint and the Virgins. Everyone involved tried their best to make it work, but in the end it could not. I want to thank these bands for their support and trying their hardest to make it possible and look forward to working with them in the future.

We did, however, gain some really awesome bands, including:

the Mountain Goats, Black Kids, the Gaslight Anthem, Tilly and the Wall, Sundowner, Keith Murray and more.

Look forward to seeing everyone at the Harvest of Hope Fest!”

Scion Rock Fest is getting closer and closer. They have a schedule up and it is looking good:

OUTDOOR STAGE
1:00-1:40pm Kylesa
2:00-2:40pm Torche
3:00-3:40pm Baroness
6:45pm-7:45pm Wolves In The Throne Room
10:25pm-11:25pm 1349

PURGATORY
2:50pm-3:35pm Alestorm
3:55pm-4:40pm A Storm Of Light
5:00pm-5:45pm Harvey Milk
6:05pm-6:50pm Rwake
7:20pm-8:05pm Tyr
8:45pm-9:30pm Coalesce
10:00pm-11:00pm Zoroaster

I had previously reported that they gave out 10,000 tickets and were only letting in 3000, but those numbers were exaggerated. The venue holds 4,700 and they gave away far, far fewer than 10,000, so as long as you get there at the beginning of the day, you should have no problems getting in. This is going down at the Masquerade February 28, more info at the website.

So if you are looking for a spring break adventure now that Langerado got cancelled, there’s another Florida music festie that is looking rather nice. Harvest Of Hope Fest is happening March 6-8 in St. Augustine and has a nice lineup with plenty of talented acts including most notably to me, Devotchka, Broken Social Scene, Bad Brains, Girl Talk, Tokyo Police Club, Health, John Vanderslice, and Holy Fuck, plus a bunch of good punk bands and a large amount of names I’ve never heard before. And with all the big fests making headlines the last couple of weeks, HOH Fest had some great artist additions go under the radar:

GZA
Kool Keith
Diplo
Deerhunter
Summerbirds In The Cellar
plus more

What makes this fest particularly enticing is that a ticket costs less than $40. Get all the info you need at their website.

South By Southwest’s lineup of official showcase bands now sits at 1,800 acts. Yes, seriously. To illustrate how mammoth this thing is, they just announced some new artist additions, and I pulled out a small fraction of them that I want to see:

A Armada, Abe Vigoda, All The Saints, Amplive, Asobi Seksu, Lou Barlow, Camera Obscura, Chairlift, Dead Confederate, Deastro, The Decemberists, Department Of Eagles, Dirty Projectors, Earlimart, Efterklang, Larkin Grimm, Illinois, Indian Jewelry, Jaguar Love, Klever, Kylesa, Le Castle Vania, Loney Dear, Jason Lytle, Maps & Atlases, Meat Puppets, No Age, The Paper Chase, Phosphorescent, Ponytail, The Rosebuds, Rotary Downs, School Of Seven Bells, Shearwater, Silversun Pickups, Starfucker, Takka Takka, These Are Powers, Treasure Fingers, M Ward, White Denim, and Women.

The Ohmpark crew is heading down to SXSW again this year, so I’ll break down the full lineup and events once all of the shows and parties have been listed, but if you are interested in keeping up with all of the latest SXSW info, I suggest checking out these sites:

http://www.sxsw.com/

Remember that passes are $650 until this Friday before they jump up even higher. Also, any of you ATL bands or peeps who are going to be down there, hit us up.
