Ohmpark’s Top 40 Songs of 2011

Now that this blog only covers local music, I decided that all of my year-end lists this year will be Atlanta music specific. There’s plenty of sites that do national/international lists anyway. So then, this is my 40 favourite songs of the year by artists affiliated with Atlanta. I spent a lot of time with each of these songs, and if you are unfamiliar with any of them, I strongly suggest you click on the song titles below to give them a listen.

[Mp3] Dark Room: “BatShit”

Dark Room, aka Graham Yoder of Jungol, released a free digital EP last week called “Gothic Picnic.” The six song collection showcases some of his best solo material, which lies in the sonic spectrum somewhere between IDM and bedroom pop. It’s a starkly different aesthetic than Jungol, demonstrating an impressive range from a very talented musician. Be sure to grab this one:

Jungol‘s Graham Yoder has been releasing solo material for a while now, but he’s finally put a name to his solo project, Dark Room. The first installment under this banner is a draft of a tune he has been working on. I love the feel of it already, and can’t wait to hear how the song evolves.

Jungol just released a single from their forthcoming new record, and it’s yet another wonderful piece from this talented trio. In addition to their upcoming album, they also have a live DVD release on the horizon. And they will be celebrating this new song tomorrow (Saturday, Feb 26) night at The Earl, so be sure to catch their captivating live performance after you listen to and download the track below.

[Stream] Jungol: “Two People” (TRICIL Remix)

Last Friday night’s Anniversary show at the Earl turned out to be a pretty stellar night. You can find some great photos of the concert by Max Blau here. All five bands played a compelling, tight set, and Jungol were no exception. They’ve become such a monster live. After the show, I noticed this wonderful remix of “Two People” by TRICIL. I really like how the track is significantly altered while leaving the structure of the song intact for the most part, a rarity when it comes to remixes, which usually either flatten out the song with a beat or get really crazy. You can stream it below and then download it in exchange for an email. And be sure to check out more of TRICIL‘s work at his website, where other tunes are freely available.

Since dropping one of the better records to come out of Atlanta this year, Jungol‘s Graham Yoder has kept busy, churning out an impressive output of solo material posted on his Soundcloud page. His latest Jurassic Park inspired piece is a glitchy, atmospheric jaunt that confirms he’s as adept at electronic music as he is at proggy rock. Give a listen, and then go check out the rest of his solo material:

[Mp3] Jungol: “Two People”

As the Internet age of music continues grinding down the barriers to entry, artists attempting to break in are forced to find ways to stand out from the billion or so other artists vying for the same attention. Because of this, things like subtlety and nuance are left by the wayside in favour of more straightforward and broadly-appealing approaches. Increasingly ADD listeners trying to rip through as much music as possible will often overlook a record that doesn’t hit them right away. Thus, the “grower” record is becoming an endangered species. But it’s not dead just yet, as evidenced by the newest release from Atlanta’s Jungol.

Over The Sun And Under The Radar is the first full-length under the Jungol banner, but it’s far from a debut for the Yoder Brothers and Co. After contracting their former band name, they had set out on new course with last year’s Places EP, and the promise of that musical shift has come into fruition with OTSAUTR. They have found a way to distill all of their knowledge, built upon years and years of sonic experimentation, into sharply focused pop with an uncompromising quantity of artistic depth. With so much disposable junk all the rage these days, it’s always refreshing to spend time with a record that rewards a patient listener.
