[Mp3] Young Again: “Host”

After releasing a couple songs earlier this year, Young Again have finally put forth a record, a four song EP called I Woke Up Smiling. “Control,” which I blogged about back in April, is joined by three other dreamy yet well written songs, resulting in a short record that’s worth many a listen. Also, Young Again member Seth Bolton’s other project, Living Rooms, released a new cut earlier this week as well, so be sure to check that out too.

[Mp3] Feast Of Violet featuring Seth Bolton: “Linsen”
Last week Roman Photos released their final EP before disbanding after losing bassist Chris Daresta. The three remaining members plan to continue making music together under a different moniker, and each is working on solo material. Before I even had a chance to blog about that last record, RP‘s Allen Taylor dropped a new release from his project Feast Of Violet. The five song EP features guests spots that include Featureless Ghost, Ominous Castle, The Voice Of Saturn, and Seth Bolton (Living Rooms, Young Again). Here’s a track, and then go download it all for free:

[Mp3] Living Rooms: “Tongue Side Out”
The new Living Rooms record has finally arrived, in digital form free to download, and it is rather incredible. After listening to House Kid twice in a row, I’m totally blown away. This is definitely going to be one of the best records to come out of Atlanta this year. So, go ahead and download it right now and don’t forget they open for Here We Go Magic Friday night at The Earl, which makes for an incredible lineup:

[Mp3] Living Rooms: “Light Bright”
There are quite a few promising local records yet to drop this year, and one I’m very much looking forward to is the new Living Rooms. Some people may bemoan their obvious Animal Collective influence, but AnCo created an entirely new genre, and there is plenty of territory within this aesthetic that has yet to be explored. With so many bands these days plundering the same old riffs and ideas worn thin half a century ago, I think it’s hard to fault an artist for using the most important and forward-looking band of the last decade as a starting point. The bottom line is that I danced my ass off last time I saw them live, and that is not a very common occurrence for me. So be sure to hit up their free show at 529 Monday night. And here’s a track I found floating around cyberspace:

Photos and Review: Octopus Project, Tealights, Living Rooms at The Star Bar in Atlanta, GA (8/6/09)

All black and white photos by Clint Miller
All color photos by Kevin Griggs
I arrived at the Star Bar about halfway through the first song from an Atlanta based three piece called Living Rooms. Their sound immediately caught my attention, as it was extremely similar to Animal Collective. The only major difference that I could distinguish was their use of heavy bass in their sound. It had more of a club/dance feel than Animal Collective.

I was not the only person who felt this way. Almost everyone I talked to mentioned that they were good yet sounded just like AC or Panda Bear. They did, however, hold my attention throughout their entire set.

Even though they sounded like Animal Collective, they did not sound as if they had ripped them off. It was just apparent what they have probably been listening to them for years. I look forward to hearing more from these guys and would recommend them to anyone who is a fan of experimental pop or indie music.

After Living Rooms left the stage I decided to get some drinks and wait for Tealights, another Atlanta band, to play. Then I waited some more. Apparently there were some major problems with the sound and setting up. I found out later that the band was having difficulty with the sound guy. We waited about an hour before they actually took the stage. At this point it was nearing midnight and I was pretty tired. Tealights is a four piece consisting of Brett Kelly on drums, Mikey Johnson playing guitar/electronics and singing, Mary Knight who sings and plays cello, and Nancy Shim who plays flute, keyboard and sings.
