Festival Updates: Bonnaroo Additions, Lollapalooza Lineup, Coachella Happened
Bonnaroo has decided to jump into the “curating” game that All Tomorrow’s Parties has made so popular. The are letting David Byrne pick the lineup for one stage on the evening of Friday June 12. He has chosen the following acts to play it:
Santigold
Dirty Projectors
Ani Difranco
St. Vincent
Katzenjammer
Most of those acts were already on the lineup, but Dirty Projectors is an addition, and a pretty badass one at that. What is unclear to me right is what part of the “evening” these acts would play. They seem an unlikely group for late night, although that would be cool. Maybe Bonnaroo will actually have something else going on during the headliner spot. By the way we are only 50 days away from this, I’m starting to get excited.
Lollapalooza has announced its lineup and it is looking very similar to Bonnaroo’s outside of the headliners. Check it out: Click here to read the entire post…

Festival Updates: Pitchfork, Lollapalooza, Coachella, ATP NY
There have been some festival happenings lately, so i’m going to wrap them all up for you here. First, Pitchfork Music Festival announced their initial lineup.
Friday:
Tortoise
Yo La Tengo
The Jesus Lizard
Built To Spill
Saturday:
The National
Pharoahe Monch
The Pains Of Being Pure Heart
Sunday:
Grizzly Bear
The Walkmen
Vivian Girls
it’s a great start. Instead of doing the ATP “Don’t Look Back” thing they have done in past years where bands perform one of their classic albums, this year they are changing up the format. Everyone who buys a ticket gets to vote on songs they want the Friday night bands to play, and the bands will tailor their setlists accordingly. The fest is going down in Chicago July 17-19 and tickets go on sale this Friday.
With just 36 days until Coachella 2009 kicks off, they have made some lineup changes. First, Amy Winehouse has dropped off. Did anyone really believe she was going to show up for this? Also, they added a few key bands:
The Chemical Brothers
The Orb
Devendra Banhart
Murder City Devils
Etienne De Crecy
Busy P
It’s going down April 17-19 in Indio, California and tickets to this are still available:
There is no official word yet on this year’s Lollapalooza, but The Chicago Tribune is claiming that the headliners will include:
Depeche Mode
Beastie Boys
Jane’s Addiction
The Chicago based fest is happening August 7-9. Early bird tickets go on sale March 31, but I’ve heard rumours of $60 tickets available this week:
Finally, New York’s ATP fest has quietly added some more bands to the lineup, including Akron/Family, Melvins, and The Jesus Lizard, making the current lineup look like this:
Friday:
The Jesus Lizard
Suicide – Performing Suicide (1st LP)
Dirty Three – Performing Ocean Songs
The Drones – Performing Wait Long By The River And The Bodies Of Your Enemies Will Float By
David Cross
Saturday:
Animal Collective
Panda Bear
Melvins
El-P
Dead Meadow
Akron Family
Sleepy Sun
Black Dice
Antipop Consortium
Autolux
Atlas Sound
Sunday:
The Flaming Lips (curating Sunday lineup)
It keeps getting better and better, and you know the Sunday lineup put together by The Flaming Lips is going to amazing. It is going down September 11-13 in Monticello, NY. Tickets have been on sale since last year:

Our Coverage Of Lollapalooza 2008 Coverage
This year there are a ton of music fests across the US, and unfortunately I can’t get to them all. But, there are still more music bloggers than festivals, so I can at least give you the scoop on the scoop. Lollapalooza is the fest I-most-wanted-to-go-to-but-couldn’t-make-it-to of the year. I think they had the best line-up of the major fests and on top of that, it is probably the only yearly festival on this continent to remain relevant for such a long span of time. The essentials from the weekend:
The biggest story seems to be the riotous crowd at Saturday night’s Rage Against The Machine show getting so crazy that RATM had to cut their set short. You can read a very long, but excellent and detailed account of the entire ordeal here from Chicago Sun-Times reporter Jim DeRogatis.
Grizzly Bear performed 4 new songs, two of which were debuted there. Stereogum had audio they recorded up of the new songs, but were asked to take it down. They still got good Griz coverage.
The biggest band at Lollapalooza, and in the world pretty much right now, was Radiohead and you can see the setlist and photos here. Friday marked the first time the festival has ever sold out a day (75,000) since adopting the Bonnaroo/Coachella model and basing the fest in Chicago in 2005. In fact the festival went on to sellout every day. With new national fests popping up weekly now, it seems music festival over-saturation hasn’t been a factor for Lolla. Of course having Radiohead on the bill doesn’t hurt, but I’m guessing the secret to their success was being the only fest in this country that didn’t have Jack Johnson come stink things up.
Atlanta’s Black Lips were there. They have tour dates. They were named by NME as one of the “Top 25 bands making America cool again”.
Former Uncle Tupelo member Bill Belzer played with Jeff Tweedy. Wilco played a new song that you should go listen to here. See Bloc Party vids and pics here. Kanye West‘s set went over better than his at Bonnaroo but he still said some douchey stuff. Yeasayer got interviewed. The widely circulated rumours of Barack Obama being there turned out to be false.
Largehearted Boy is keeping up with all of the live Lollapalooza downloadables here.
Next year hopefully I’ll bring you my own coverage. Below are some vids from Earfarm’s best of Lollapalooza video collection:
Radiohead:
Wilco:

Friday Free-Style
I’m about to head to Myrtle Beach for the night to catch The Mars Volta. Tickets for that show are still available so I would recommend quiting your day job and catching it. If you can’t do that, the 13 Day Mission, Beatrix Kiddo, Miles From Pangea show 11:11 teahouse is going to be the hottness. If you are completely broke, here’s a free show:
Lollapalooza is announcing its line-up on Monday, but the Chicago Sun-Times has leaked a bunch of it. The following bands have been confirmed:
Radiohead
Nine Inch Nails
Rage Against The Machine
Wilco
Grizzly Bear
Battles
The Raconteurs
Kanye West
Gnarls Barkley
The Black Keys
Broken Social Scene
G. Love And The Special Sauce
Blues Traveler
Mates Of State
Bloc Party
Cat Power
Stephen Malkmus
Girl Talk
Kid Sister
Office
The Cool Kids
The Go! Team
Jamie Lidell
That is serious line-up. This is going to be a big event. I think I’m gonna have to hit this one up. You may have noticed Grizzly Bear up there, and word on the street is that they are opening for some of Radiohead‘s dates. In other Chicago festival news, Pitchfork Fest has added some acts and the line-up is looking much better. As it stands:
Friday, July 18:
Pitchfork Music Festival and All Tomorrow’s Parties
present “Don’t Look Back” Public Enemy performing
It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
* Mission of Burma performing Vs. *
+ one more to be announced
Saturday, July 19:
Animal Collective * Jarvis Cocker * !!! Vampire Weekend Dizzee Rascal Fleet Foxes No Age * Jay Reatard * * King Khan & His Shrines * Atlas Sound * The Ruby Suns * * A Hawk and a Hacksaw * * Occidental Brothers Dance Band International *
+ many more!
Sunday, July 20:
* Dinosaur Jr. * Spiritualized M. Ward * Ghostface and Raekwon * * The Apples in Stereo * Boris * Dirty Projectors * * Cut Copy * Extra Golden El Guincho * Fuck Buttons *
+ many more!
Keep in mind the ticket price is $65 for a weekend pass, which is a great bargain compared to the skyrocketing festival ticket prices from everyone else. Another festival announcement made some noise this week too: Baltimore’s Virgin Mobile Fest. They announced their headliners:
Foo Fighters
Jack Johnson
Kanye West
Nine Inch Nails
Stone Temple Pilots
There’s two things to note here. 1. The Stone Temple Pilots are indeed back and on the reunion bandwagon. They have announced that they have exactly 65 North American days scheduled right now. Talk about cashing in. Oh yeah, Scott Weiland is in a tiff with his other band, Velvet Revolver. 2. Why the hell is Jack Johnson headlining all these festivals? I mean seriously, this douche must be stopped. Jack Johnson is like a Dave Matthews who can’t play more than three chords. The dude sucks.
Atlanta’s Nophest 4 & 20 festival going down in a couple weeks has added more to its line-up and schedule and you can check it out at their website. Ohmpark is sponsoring the event, so expect epicness.
I had been rumour-mongering this forever, but Pitchfork has confirmed that Bradford Cox (Deerhunter/Atlas Sound) worked on The Wild Things soundtrack with Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs). They have also reported that Deerhunter is recording their new album, Microcastle, as a 4-piece, and Colin Mee is officially no longer part of the band.
R.E.M., Modest Mouse, The National tickets go on sale tomorrow. Click here to read the entire post…

Atlanta’s Luigi is going into some sort of long hiatus/maybe break-up after their March 28th show at The Earl.
The Tabernacle got thrashed by the tornadoes, but they won’t have a full damage assessment until Friday. Click here to read the entire post…
