Live Show: Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group (3/17/09)

ORL_2009-03-17_front

The ridiculously prolific The Mars Volta mastermind is releasing yet another album next month under the Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group banner. Titled Xenophanes, it will be the first work to feature vocals from Omar himself. This show from earlier this year features the same incarnation of the Group found on the new record.

I Heart Omar Rodriguez Lopez

The latest effort from the mastermind behind The Mars Volta, Old Money, was released digitally last year and placed #35 on our Top 50 albums of 2008. The album finally got a full media release last week, and I realized that I had completely forgot to do a post on it when it originally came out. Old Money was a possible follow up to 2006′s Amputechture until Omar decided to take the band in a different direction. He opted to do it instead as a solo work, and I think the results benefited from that choice. It is more Amputechture than Amputechture, and the lack of restraint afforded to his solo moniker works to create something special brimming with over-the-top psychedelics. It works especially well because the excessive music parallels the theme of the album. Not that any of his previous solo work was lacking in far out experimentation, but this might be his most successful to date.

The Mars Volta Coming To The Tabernacle (4/5/08)

Ok, I know this is my billionth Mars Volta post lately and you’re probably getting tired of my hype, but TMV is coming to Atlanta in April and I’m pretty excited about that. There doesn’t seem to be any sort of official word yet, but Ticketmaster has a presale going on tomorrow and general public tickets go on sale Saturday at 10am. Check it out here. Also, it may just be a misprint, but the NY Times included TMV in their Bonnaroo line-up. Here’s a couple tracks off Omar‘s new solo record (also, Omar claims he’s putting out 8 solo records this year):

Ohmpark’s Top 50 Best Albums Of 2007

2007 was an incredible year of music and there were so many albums I really liked that didn’t make this list. I noticed that most of the lists I pay attention to were very similar to one another this year as opposed to last year. Also, I’ve found myself in more of a disagreeance with those lists than last year. If there is any theme to be taken out of this list, I think it’s that I feel like too many great albums were underrated by the blogosphere elites, and that they were way in love with some albums I think are overrated. This list represents my personal assertions more so than the rest of the Ohmpark crew, but I worked hard to get every one’s opinions and influences in this thing. Feel free to comment on how much you hate or love it. I feel like every album on this is an essential one from last year, so go listen to some new music:
