The Top 15 Best Atlanta Albums Of 2008
It’s been a banner year for the Atlanta music scene. The international success of bands like Deerhunter, Black Lips, and Mastodon over the last couple of years has put a spotlight on our city and many other artists are beginning to reap the benefits. I still believe that too many of our best and brightest are being overlooked, but that’s exactly why I do what I do. Looking back at my favourite local albums from last year, it seems this year’s class of studio work runs substantially deeper. I felt our scene is so overpopulated by albums worthy of recognition that I extended my original top 10 to a top 15 and I’m still leaving off a ton of really good records from Inside The Perimeter.
A couple of notes, there are a few local albums that have been self-released over the holidays, but I’m rolling them into consideration for next year’s list, and one album on here technically came out in the holiday season of last year. I didn’t do write-ups for this list as many of these are going to make my top LP and top EP lists in a few days, but if you are unfamiliar with any of these acts, I urge you to click on the “tags” below to see all of our posts on the artist. I know someone is gonna complain about Bradford Cox being involved with 20% of this list, but the guy is kicking ass in both quality and quantity of work, so don’t be a player hater. Here is the best Atlanta music of 2008:
15. The Goldest : The Goldest
14. Gringo Star : All Y’all
13. Atlas Sound : Things I’ll Miss
12. Today The Moon, Tomorrow The Sun :
The Lightning Exhibit11. No Face : You Mean So Much To Me
10. Nomen Novum : Mantis Man 7″

9. Parade : Ghosts
8. The Liverhearts : Ornament

7. Lid Emba & Bobcrane : We Substitute
Radiance
6. All The Saints : Fire On Corridor X
5. Dead Confederate : Wrecking Ball
4. Atlas Sound : Let The Blind Lead Those
Who Can See But Cannot Feel
3. This Piano Plays Itself : This Piano Plays
Itself

2. Slushco : When I Met The Boss Of Nova

1. Deerhunter : Microcastle/Weird Era Cont.

An Atlanta Mp3 Trilogy: Parade, Gold Standard, Backseat Dreamer

Parade @ Criminal Records (6/17/07)
Parade was one of the first discoveries I made when I seriously started looking into the Atlanta music scene. From the beginning, they had this amazing command of pop sensibilities combined with a deep avant-garde streak, a duality I cherish in all of my favourite artists. I’ve always associated them with the most positive connotations of the word “potential”, and getting to watch them mature between albums and the many house shows they had done for me was almost like watching a child grow into adulthood. They may have not achieved the level of popularity they deserved before breaking up earlier this year, but their final album is a testament to the brilliance of what I consider to be one of Atlanta’s best bands to emerge this decade. Ghosts is available for free on their myspace, so go get it:
Another ATL group that met their demise too soon was Blame Game. Luckily former members who still live here have been active with about a bajillion other projects. The newest I have learned about is called Gold Standard featuring ex-Blame Gamers George Asimakos and Chris Ware teamed up with Lee Corum (Lay Down Mains, Some Soviet Station). They will be releasing a full-length album and doing shows next year, but for now they just posted two songs on their myspace page recorded off one mic. They sound really good, and here is one of them:
Gold Standard : Motor Skills Are Hard To Control
Finally, no matter how many great bands call it quits, there will always be new blood eager to take up the mantle. Backseat Dreamer, aka Sean Neuse, entered the game last month with his debut EP, Love Not Found. The almost seventeen minute release from Stickfigure feels like a sketch book full of works that aim somewhere between Aphex Twin and My Bloody Valentine. This first glimpse of what Backseat Dreamer can achieve is so successful and compelling, and I’m excited about the prospects of a full-length heading our way early next year. Pick it up:

Parade Release Final Album, Ghosts, For Free
An Atlanta band I have been a fan of for a long time, Parade, called it quits earlier this year. But before they did, they had recorded one last album called Ghosts that they have finally finished and released for free today. What a great Halloween surprise gift! I had been looking forward to this album for quite a while, and after my first listen, I think it may end up being their finest piece of work to date. It’s great to finally hear these songs that I had loved live in studio form. Be sure not to miss this:

They will be joined by Lafayette, Louisiana’s Brass Bed stopping through the ATL on their US tour. The show is completely free to attend. B-Sides: Ohmpark Inteviews Parade
Our top 50 album list is pretty much done and will be up by the end of the week, but while we’re putting our finishing touches on that, I wanted to post some things we never got a chance to over the last year. Last summer, we went to Parade’s practice space and filmed them playing a few songs and did an interview. Between getting a bad rip and losing the tape, we were unable to really do anything with it, but here is the 10 minute interview uncut for your viewing pleasure:

Ohmpark’s Top 10 Best EPs Of 2007
An EP, or Extended Play, is the sweet spot between a full album and a single. Typically between 10 and 25 minutes, although what has come to define the difference between EPs and LPs can sometimes be blurred. Usually EPs get a bad rap, as it carries with it connotations of being “less-than” and not good enough to be a proper album, but I like seeing variations in the art medium. There are EPs like Alice In Chains’ Jar Of Flies and Radiohead‘s Airbag/How Am I Driving? that beat most full lengths. Also, EPs afford an artist the chance to showcase things that don’t fit in the context of a larger piece of work, or explore a different sound without moving fully in that direction. Anyways, I’d take an EP of nothing but the goodness over a full-length comprised mostly of filler surrounding a few good songs any day.
In 2007 I actually heard many great EPs. A few of which I’ll give honorable mentions that just missed this list that are worth-while include Joanna Newsom And The Ys Street Band, Vampire Weekend, and Black Kids‘ Wizard Of Ahhhs, of which I’ve come around a little bit on now that I’ve listened to it more. Here are the 10 most essential short-length albums of 2007: Click here to read the entire post…
