Ohmpark’s Top 40 Songs of 2011
Now that this blog only covers local music, I decided that all of my year-end lists this year will be Atlanta music specific. There’s plenty of sites that do national/international lists anyway. So then, this is my 40 favourite songs of the year by artists affiliated with Atlanta. I spent a lot of time with each of these songs, and if you are unfamiliar with any of them, I strongly suggest you click on the song titles below to give them a listen.

[Mp3] Tim Kohler and the Big Tent Revival Party: “Weekend”
Kid Stuff alumni Tim Kohler has spent the last year gathering a merry band of local musicians that includes members from acts such as Small Reactions, Hello Ocho, and Cute Boots to form The Big Tent Revival Party. After several live performances in 2011, they finally released their first recorded material, a single called “Weekend.” It’s an upbeat, epic pop song that serves as a pleasant introduction to an Atlanta outfit on the rise.

[Stream] Small Reactions: “Sudden Walks” (Single Edit)
Small Reactions are releasing a new 7″ at 529 August 5th. It’s another small dose of accessible post-punky hooks and jams, an aesthetic that this band seems to pull off more successfully and effortlessly than any one else in Atlanta. Enjoy a cut from the record:

[Mp3] Small Reactions: “Cult Hero Jonathan Lewin”
I’m a little late with this one, but the new Small Reactions 7″ is pretty good, containing two cool guitar-driven rockers. They are releasing it tonight at 529 with Sorry No Ferrari. Here’s the a-side, which has a nice Sonic Youth-ish feel to the instrumentals:
