An Atlanta Mp3 Trilogy: The Selmanaires, Today The Moon, Tomorrow The Sun, Snowden
There is an unreal amount of good music coming out Atlanta just this month, and here’s a tiny fraction of it:
The Selmanaires

Seemingly out of nowhere, The Selmanaires just dropped their newest album, a 6 song, 30 minute EP called Tempo Temporal. You can find plenty of info on it at their blog. In the past I generally found about 25% of The Selmanaires stuff brilliant, and the other 75% not very enjoyable, but after just one listen I’m loving everything about this newest effort. I had heard rumours that the new stuff was something of a departure, and they have definitely veered in a much more palatable direction for me. The new record will be available on their upcoming tour that begins at The Earl this Thursday with Atlas Sound and Broadcast, but they are streaming the entire thing on their myspace and I highly recommend giving it a listen. Here’s the single they released that features guest vocals from Adron:
The Selmanaires : Resonance Alright
Today The Moon, Tomorrow The Sun

This weekend the great band with the long name will be dropping their 3rd album. It is yet another EP, containing 5 new songs along with a few old favourites remixed. It is titled Heavyweight Champions, and will be available at their release show this Saturday night at the Drunken Unicorn. Fans of TTMTTS will find this new release as enjoyable as their previous work, but there is an energy and magic this band possesses live that they have still yet to fully capture in the studio. I love the remixes, but the original section seems to lack a bit of momentum at times. It might be more a matter of preference for me than quality though, and overall it’s still well worth checking out. They will be posting new songs all week on their myspace page, but here is my favourite from it:

Snowden

While we continue to anxiously await the follow up to 2006′s Anti Anti, Snowden has given us a little something to hold us over for now. They recently contributed a cover to a tribute album for Bauhaus offshoot Love & Rockets. The compilation features contributions from the likes of Black Francis and A Place To Bury Strangers along with many others. Here is their take on “No Words No More”:

Future Atlanta Albums: Mastodon, Snowden, Pistolero
Mastodon‘s newest record, Crack The Skye, still doesn’t have an official release date yet, but many sources say it looks to hit stores late March. The band will be revealing the artwork for the new album on Monday, so it is definitely coming soon. Brann Dailor talks about the theme of the album:
There is a paraplegic and the only way that he can go anywhere is if he astral travels. He goes out of his body, into outer space and a bit like Icarus, he goes too close to the sun, burning off the golden umbilical cord that is attached to his solar plexus. So he is in outer space and he is lost, he gets sucked into a wormhole, he ends up in the spirit realm and he talks to spirits telling them that he is not really dead. So they send him to the Russian cult, they use him in a divination and they find out his problem. They decide they are going to help him. They put his soul inside Rasputin’s body. Rasputin goes to usurp the czar and he is murdered. The two souls fly out of Rasputin’s body through the crack in the sky(e) and Rasputin is the wise man that is trying to lead the child home to his body because his parents have discovered him by now and think that he is dead. Rasputin needs to get him back into his body before it’s too late. But they end up running into the Devil along the way and the Devil tries to steal their souls and bring them down…there are some obstacles along the way.
Well, that is interesting. As you know Mastodon will be playing the Scion Rock Fest next month, so I’m sure that show will be full of new numbers. Until then, you can listen to a tease of a new song on their website, and here is a new song from the album called “Divinations” from their Bonnaroo set:

Snowden @ Variety Playhouse (11/30/07)
Pretty much since i started this blog i have been patiently waiting for Snowden‘s follow up to 2006′s Anti Anti, and it looks like we are starting to get really close. On Snowden‘s great blog, David Payne gives a progress report:
In Snowden news, there’s another new song Jordan just finished (really good one) and now we’re about to start shopping some demos around. The whole album is basically written and now we’re just looking for the right option in regards to releasing it. I know it’s taking a long time to come out, but we didn’t want to rush this one. The sound has evolved quite a bit with this batch of songs and I think people will dig it. Thanks to everyone for having patience. New music from Snowden will definitely drop this year!
Well I know I can’t friggin’ wait. Here is a great video of them working on these infamous demos floating around elite ears right now:
And here is a live video of a new song called “Red Handed”:
Atlanta’s Pistolero is dropping their sixth release in two years, an LP entitled Warface, on April 25th. Here is the track list for it:
1. Monster Cable
2. Sniveling Little Git
3. Thieves & Murderous Other Bits
4. Yellow House
5. Postcard from the Apocalypse
6. Tug
7. Spreadsheets
8. Cuttin In (Eva’s Last Dance)
9. Picture Perfect
10. Sunburn
11. North Island Toot
12. King of Atlanta
13. Lonesome Train
Here is a track from it to preview:

Ohmpark Mixtape #5: Holiday Chillout Mix
For this mix, I worked hard to pick out the very best holiday songs I could find from the artists we heart and put them together in a dreamy, surreal, maybe creepy sort of overall piece. For instance, Evangelicals have a Christmas song b-side from somewhere, but there’s something more special about “Snowflakes” from The Evening Descends that just sets the mood I’m going for much more appropriately. I hope you enjoy, and happy holidays to all of you!
Au : I’ll Be Home For Christmas
Bodies Of Water w/ No Small Kindness : O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
Snowden : White Christmas
Atlas Sound : Requiem For All The Lonely Teenagers With Passed Out Moms
My Morning Jacket : Silent Night
Death Cab For Cutie : Christmas (Baby Please Come Over)
Evangelicals : Snowflakes
Deerhoof : Little Drummer Boy
Sufjan Stevens : O Holy Night
Low : Blue Christmas

Atlanta Album Preview: Snowden

Anti Anti was the summer jam for me last year after I finally got a copy, so I’m very much looking forward to the next album. The details seem murky right now, so here are some videos of new material they played at a show at The Earl back in February:
