[Mp3] Sorry No Ferrari: “Ashar” (Music For People Remix)
Sorry No Ferrari have been slowly releasing the stems to their songs from last year’s Ternary, and the remixes are starting to roll in. The latest comes from Music For People, who you may know better as Mikey Johnson of Tealights, and it’s really good. For those of you interested in doing your own remix, check out Sorry No Ferrari‘s blog for details.

[Mp3] Sorry No Ferrari: “Ternary II” (Original Demo)
Sorry No Ferrari has announced that they are slowly releasing the stems to Ternary, their latest record, for others to remix their songs. The first track they are releasing this way is “Setun,” and if you are interested in remixing it, you can find details at Sorry No Ferrari‘s blog. Also, they recently dropped an early version of “Ternary II” which Brett Kelly first recorded back in 2007, intended originally to be part of a solo record. This song, my favourite from the record, has evolved quite a bit over the years, but the end part of this version is very cool.

[Mp3] Sorry No Ferrari: “Ashar”
Sorry No Ferrari‘s first full-length record, Ternary, hits stores this month, and it is a cornucopia of mathy, proggy, instrumental jams. Mammoth feats of technical prowess are combined with sharp songwriting, resulting in one of the better records to come out of Atlanta this year. You can snag a copy at their release show October 23rd at the Drunken Unicorn with From Exile and Hello Ocho, and you can stream the entire thing now at Stickfigure. Here’s an mp3 to preview:

The Fest 7: On The Road With Sorry No Ferrari

Gainesville, FL. November 1st-2nd, 2008
The weekend before last, I rode along with Atlanta instrumental rockers Sorry No Ferrari for their performance at The Fest, a punk music festival in Gainesville, Florida. I woke up very early Saturday morning after a long Halloween night to ride along with the three fourths of the band I didn’t really know, but between naps I had plenty of conversation with them about things including music, the history of the band, and barbecue. This was actually the first show with their new drummer, Jonathan Balsamo, so there was lots of getting to know each other between the band as well. We were trying to get to The Fest in time to catch fellow ATLiens Benard, but we got there a few moments too late. So we went to the biggest venue of the fest, which was a bit smaller than Variety Playhouse, to catch Atom & His Package. It was a one-man-punk-band who seems to be a pretty big deal in the punk universe, but very much not my thing.
After that we headed to a tiny venue called 1982 to catch the local Gainesville band whose house we were staying at, Giuseppe. The venue had lots of very old gaming systems hooked up to the TVs on the bar, so I played some Dr. Mario and drink PBRs with the SNF folks for a bit. Giuseppe took the small stage and rocked the house:

After that I jumped around to different venues to see some shows, but didn’t see anything too special. So I joined SNF for some food and drinks and drunken music discussions/debates. The band I was most excited about catching down here was Pegasuses XL, an Athens outfit with ties to We Versus The Shark, and they did not disappoint. I’ve really been enjoying their album, The Antiphon, and I will have more on that in a future post, but here is some eye candy from their epic live set:

Friday Free-Style
Ok, to start off, I have two corrections to make. First, in the post “Atlanta Album Preview: Nomen Novum” I had listed what I believed to be a possible tracklisting to Nomen Novum‘s upcoming debut album, November, but I in fact gave you the possible tracklist Nomen Novum‘s second album comprised of songs they are performing live already. The tracklist for November looks like this:
intro / new coke
permanent makeup
I collect things/pow-pow
little witches
don’t look up
my face her body
parallel eyes
that’s a moray
precious moments
hand-me-downs
Expect it to be available in the month of which it is named, and another Nomen Novum to follow.
The other correction is from my last “What The Hell Am i Listening to?!?” post. I claimed Sorry No Ferrari‘s EP The Get Down Syndrome had been released “recently”, when in actuality it had been released back in 2006. I had incorrectly thought that it was the new record they are currently finishing up, but obviously it is not.
So, in both cases, there is more great music coming than I expected.
Broken Social Scene will be at The Variety Playhouse November 19th.
My Brightest Diamond will be in Atlanta December 7th.
Phosphorescent will be at the Drunken Unicorn November 7th. Click here to read the entire post…

Live Videos: This Piano Plays Itself, Sorry No Ferrari (9/12/2008) Lenny’s Bar
Last Friday night before I headed OTP, I went down to Lenny’s to catch two Ohmpark favourites. This Piano Plays Itself unleashed two new, fantastic songs from the new album they are currently working on (the first and third video below). Also, this was the last show for Sorry No Ferrari‘s drummer David Ragsdale, and they demonstrated their brilliant musicianship yet again. Here’s some vids from two of Atlanta’s hottest:

What The Hell Am I Listening to?!?
The theme for today is Atlanta artists. In fact, all of these acts are on the Atlanta label Stickfigure. I find myself liking so much of their roster.
Sorry No Ferrari
If you read Ohmpark regularly, you know I’m a fan of this mathy, posty 4-piece instrumental outfit. They totally destroyed it at the WonderRoot show we put on over the summer and this 5 track EP they have recently put out displays they are just as impressive on record as they are live. They will be at Lenny’s next Friday night, so don’t miss what may be their last show with their current drummer:

Nerdkween
Nerdkween, the moniker of Monica Arrington, has been making lo-fi, ethereal pop music since the beginning of this decade, but just now released her first proper full-length album, Synergy. The album employs low-level electronic distortion that contrasts the gorgeous and minimalistic ballads she performs, creating an interestingly contradictory feel, combining the very human, naked emotions of her songs with a very unnatural, technological aura. Even though the distort-your-music-production craze of this year is starting to wear a little thin on me, the utilization here is unique enough to rise above being just a gimmick. Plus, the music is beautiful:

The Subliminator
The word speaking and theremin playing avant-garde artist known as The Subliminator, aka Serson Brannen, returns with his sophomore album, Rake. This latest effort brings everything you would want and expect from his dark, experimental project. While you definitely need to be in the right mood to jam this one, I think it is a rather accessible album for something so crazy and over the top. Dive into the abyss:
