Atlanta Album Previews: Club Awesome, Tenth To The Moon

Club Awesome earlier this year at Lenny’s
Club Awesome are students of The Orphins school of post-punk-dance-rock, but they bring their own fun, distinct flavour. I bought a special, handmade version of their new album, Dynamos, back in April, but it still hasn’t come out yet officially. Evilsponge has it for release on September 9th on their great review of it, but I have a hunch that if you came down to the show tonight with Brass Castle and Cheeseburger at the Drunken Unicorn you could get a copy. See you there! Here’s a track from it:
Originally formed in 2002, Tenth To The Moon‘s self-titled LP will be their debut album (not counting CDRs), so it’s been a long time coming. The experimental group lead by Mitchell Foy (Pineal Ventana) and Doug Hughes also now includes Ohmpark favourite Sean Moore (Lid Emba, Envie). They “feel perfectly confident saying you haven’t heard anything quite like it” and I certainly agree with that, so this is only for the more adventurous listener. They are having their CD Release show at The Star Bar tomorrow night with Ice Caps, Falcon Lords, Missile Command and Rev Rebel and the Sound Supreme, so check it out. Here’s the opening track from Tenth To The Moon:

Corndogorama 2008 Thursday (Day 1)
The corndog man was there. Tall boys were on ice. Stage managers were running a tight ship to get bands playing on time. And there was music. With a post in the same spirit of the festival, Thursday…
My arrival just before Loose Screws produced a PBR and then the night began with some punk jams. The band also seemed to enjoy them.

Corndogorama – A Look Ahead
Alright, kiddies! Bands, beers, and battered, deep fried meat on a stick means it’s time for everyone’s favorite ADD-friendly fest. Corndogorama is near. We’ll be keeping a close eye on everything and reporting here throughout the weekend. We’re excited about moving through the flurry of fest season. With over 100 artists and bands at The ‘Rama, it’s mandatory to bend your head around a few things. So, here’s some things:
Thursday
Don’t F@#k This Up: If your job sucks, Thursday feels like it should be Friday. If your job really sucks, Tuesday felt like Friday. Either way, grab a beer and have a good laugh with the aggressive punk comedy of Attractive Eighties Women. It will make the real Friday better.
The Heartbreak: Music doesn’t start until 8pm.
The Tease: Tenth to the Moon

This experimental group sound dark and manic like a Far East version of a Joy Division cover band – and that’s a good thing. The line-up includes veterans from every corner and I’m looking forward to catching their set. Their full-length debut drops early August and promises to be what your grandmother would tactfully call “different.” I’ll see you at the side stage around 10:30.
Tenth to the Moon : House on Stilts
Friday
Don’t F$%k This Up: The zany dance party that is Dan Deacon will blow your ass right into Saturday. You’ve been notified.
The Heartbreak: Double D is the silver lining to a so-so cloud your ears will have to endure in order to get to Wham City.
The Tease: Twin Tigers

In the most straightforward manner, you need to catch these guys. This Athens outfit will trek west into the city with their acousmatic ways. If they were playing later, it might be fun to watch some drunks try to figure out where all of the sounds are coming from. As it stands, they’re penciled-in for 6:00. So, if you can’t tell the man to shove it in time to get there early – Fantaj goes on at 2:00 – make sure you make it in time to catch some solid tunes.
Twin Tigers : Curious Faces Violet Future : Watershed
Saturday
Don’t F&*k this Up: With all the respect due to the 50+ acts gracing us on Saturday, Snowden will be closing the outdoor stage for the evening. They go on at 9:45 – be on time.
The Heartbreak: Saturday is so packed that you’ll have to pull double-duty here. First, you’ll have to decide whether to catch Untied States or watch the sillies choking at the corndog eating contest. Later, my vote for worst synchronized schedule of the weekend pits The Orphins against Gringo Star.
The Tease: Make the Fur Fly

East meets West as Decatur and Athens team up for some rock roots with the occasional synth sprinkle. I’ve only heard a little from them, but I’m definitely looking forward to more and you should too. Go ahead and catch them now because they’ve got the potential to make it tougher to get a good seat in the future. Side stage at 6:30. Pass me a beer.
Make the Fur Fly : No Surprise Demo
Sunday
Don’t F!^k This Up: Pussing out and going home early is not acceptable to the Mustard King. Cinemechanica and Maserati are going to light this mofo up.
The Heartbreak: Night will fall on another Corndogorama and you’ll have to go back to your sucky job, or your really sucky job.
The Tease: Summer Birds in the Cellar
Florida represents. I’m a shoegaze sucker and these guys put out some lazy afternoon ethereal soundscapes. One of the few out-o-state bands promises to give your ears a much-needed OTP gift at 7:30 on the side stage.
Summer Birds in the Cellar : Druid : Wooden Lion
Summer Birds in the Cellar Myspace
By now, I expect that you’ve got a pass. If not, go get one. I’ll see you there.

Ohmpark’s Guide To Nophest 4&20
The weekend is almost here and I am very excited. Nophest announced a third stage of bands for Sunday April 20th at The Doogallery. For details on that and the full schedule, go to the Nophest website. I’m going to break down the acts that stand out to me and help you discover some new bands from the massive line-up. Click on the band name to listen to some tracks on their myspace or website:
Friday:
7:45pm Lovesick Scientist: A project of Justin Sias (Elevado) that is produced by Brian Slusher (Slushco). With those two top tier ATL musicians involved, it has to be good.
8:30pm R_Garcia: I’ve just sort of been introduced to Randy Garcia through Nophest, but everything I sees points to him being a pretty badass musician and dude, so I’m ready to catch this one.
9:15pm Missile Command: A band featuring members of Elevado. We got a sneak preview performance of these guys at our one year anniversary party and they rocked out hard so I’ve been excited to catch the Missile Command again. Here’s some tracks to jam:

A Weekend In The A (featuring Sebadoh, Snowden, From Exile, Tenth To The Moon, Lid Emba)
Last weekend I tried to hit up as many different shows as possible. First, i went and checked out the Snowden and Selmanaires show at Rob’s House (Records). Rob’s House was just some dude’s house in East Atlanta. They had a keg for people to drink and a tiny basement where the bands played to a tightly packed crowd of 30-50. The show time said 3pm, but i got there at 5pm and was still able to catch the end of The Selmanaires set. Snowden played next and rocked the basement out. I really like the idea of taking a typical keg party, adding some great bands and doing it early in the afternoon. Good stuff.
After hitting some bars up and taking a smoke break at my house to listen to an album or two, i headed to the Earl to catch the Jupiter Watts show. i stayed for an hour and pretty sure i didn’t see the Jupiter Watts but was way too drunk at this point to concentrate on doing a good review, so I’ll have to come and see them again. I made it back to my neighborhood and hung out with the boys in From Exile late night as they did a mini-acoustic set:
In May, From Exile is going on tour on the east coast and Ohmpark will be taking it on the road with them chronicling this journey. We will have more details on that as soon as the tour is completely booked, but it is going to be a fiasco and I hope our non-ATL readers will come check them out. They just purchased an old prisoner transport van for the trip:
On Sunday i finally got a chance to check out the ISP Space. I have to say that i like it. It is very small, but the concept and the vibe are great. I had no idea who any of the bands playing were before i went, but i was very impressed with two of them. Lid Emba is Sean Moore playing on drum machines, a drum set, and a synth. Really cool ambient, noise, experimental electronic stuff. He closed with a really interesting mash-up/reinterpretation of Black Sabbath‘s War Pigs, and despite being one of the most over-covered songs of all time, it was still stunning. I got a copy of his debut album, Reason Isn’t Radar, and after an initial listen, I really like it.
Next up was Tenth To The Moon. This three piece consisted of two older gentleman on bass and keys, and some crazy kid fronting the band switching around from vocals, to drums, to drum machines. I guess on a broad scale I would call it experimental noise-dance. At one point the vocalist pulls out a huge metal shield that is plugged into the sound system that he beats to death with his drum sticks. Really good music and a very entertaining live show that you should check out.
I finally made my way over to Sebadoh at the Variety Playhouse just in time for Lou and the boys to come on. I’m not very familiar with Sebadoh, but they were really good. An enjoyable relic of the ’90s. I have to say I enjoyed seeing Lou Barlow solo or Dinosaur Jr much more, but it was cool to see another manifestation.
