Artists to Watch: Hip-Hop

Edan over the last few years has crafted a couple of the most brilliant hip-hop albums that have been largely unheard by the masses. 2002′s, Primitive Plus was his introduction to the hip-hop community. It carries a sound reminiscent of the Beastie Boys with their same kind of New York-style production. I am a sucker for his kind of battling sound and he really upped the bar with 2005′s Beauty and the Beat. With that album, he maintained his New York roots but crafted a production style more reminiscent of the Anticon camp. It has a stoner-rock feel to the beats that makes me yearn to hear more production from this guy. Both albums come highly recommended and he’s got a new album in the works but there’s no news on a release date.

Mic Manipulator – Edan – Primitive Plus
You Suck – Edan – Primitive Plus

Rock and Roll (w/ Radja)- Edan – Beauty and the Beat
The Science of the Two – Edan – Beauty and the Beat

Here’s a video of his ridiculous live performance where he both MCs and DJs at the same time:

Also in Hip-Hop news:

Local MC, Reid Richards has been crafting an interesting album with his producer Conspiracy at the helm over the last few months. They are recording under the moniker, King Robot and the tracks are rather different from most of the hip-hop coming out of the ATL these days. He’s pulling alot of the same tactics as the Edan camp. His music is largely immersed in sampled beats and battle rhymes but has an energy and a lyrical flair that I really dig. Here’s a couple of tracks from their forthcoming LP:

Tears Burn – King Robot
Untitled – King Robot
Fishy (Produced by Threepeeoh) – King Robot

King Robot also has a flair for the freestyle. Here’s a sample of his antics:
