Shoegaze is a weapon best used sparingly, as a dynamic contrast rather than as a distraction from otherwise boring music. At least, that’s what I was thinking the first time I listened to the new Spirits and the Melchizedek Children record, We Are Here To Save YOU!, released earlier this month. The gorgeous, engaging epic was recorded by the seemingly magical Ed Rawls, who can make even the most terrible band sound good. But the album, far more than simply a triumph of production, also features powerful song writing which journeys across a wide sonic palette. This will most certainly be in the conversation as one of the best records to come out of Atlanta this year.
