What Up In The ATL?

I’m heading back to Atlanta as fast as possible because this is a monster week of music:

Tonight The Liverhearts are at the Drunken Unicorn.

Tomorrow night Suite Unraveling, Pirate Pussy, Untied States are at Eyedrum.

Wednesday night I plan on hitting both The Mars Volta at The Tabernacle and Sunset Rubdown and Nomen Novum at The Earl. If that’s not enough, Indian Jewelry are at Eyedrum.

Thursday night Ratatat is at The Masquerade.

Friday night Stereolab and Atlas Sound are at The Variety Playhouse.

Saturday night Cut Copy is at The Masquerade.

Go see some shows!

What Up In The ATL?

Can you feel the excitement for Atlantis this week? I know I’m thinking about cutting my New York trip short to make it back in time. Just Kidding. If you don’t know, Atlantis Music Conference & Festival is like SXSW’s evil, midget cousin where they take every really bad, made for pop radio artists from Atlanta, put them in the same crappy venues you would never go to that these artists always play anyways, and act like the whole thing is some big deal. We could really use a music conference in this town that doesn’t suck.

Anyways, there are a few shows that are worth checking out this week in the A:

Tonight you must go see Mogwai, Fuck Buttons at the Variety Playhouse.

Wednesday night The Selmanaires are at The Earl.

Thursday night Hope For agoldensummer are at The Earl.

Saturday night don’t miss Dead Confederate, Wax Fang, and Twin Tigers at The Earl.

Sunday These Are Powers and Jana Hunter are at Eyedrum.

What Up In The ATL?

Ah, back to the old bloggy mcblog blog…

Tonight I recommend checking out The Poison Arrows, Nomen Novum, and Lay Down Mains at The Earl. I have been listening to Lay Down Mains‘ new album, Mama, Go Rest On High, and it is pretty good. There is nothing really out of the ordinary on it, just a nice collection of hard rocking songs. They sort of remind me of a less focused and jammier Liverhearts.

Lay Down Mains : Mama, Go Rest On High : No Canon

Tomorrow night you can go see Icecaps, Missile Command, Pistolero, Black Skies at The Star Bar and/or Le Castle Vania’s Fuck Yesss Dance Party at The Drunken Unicorn late night.

Pistolero : Thieves And Murderers

Saturday night the show at The Drunken Unicorn looks interesting with Cadillac Jones, Van Heineken, Rizzudo, The Khans, and Snowden’s Jordan Jeffares DJing.

Rizzudo : 17th Street

Deerhunter’s Microcastle is now available on Itunes.

Tonight I’m heading to the Dark Meat, Oneida show at The Drunken Unicorn. I’m really interested in seeing both of those bands.

Friday night Dead Confederate will be at The Drunken Unicorn, so check that out.

Saturday night I plan on going back and forth between two shows. The Hijacking Music show at WonderRoot with 13 Day Mission, Beatrix Kiddo, Miles From Pangea, and The Jungle is going to be awesome and I’m also really excited about catching Carla Bozulich (Evangelista) opening for Xiu Xiu at the Drunken Unicorn.

Nine Inch Nails last week (photo credit: Rob Sheridan)

Tonight
Nine Inch Nails and Deerhunter are playing at the Gwinnett Center Arena, so that is the big show of the week. If you aren’t planning on heading to the ‘burbs for that, I recommend going to the Drunken Unicorn tonight and catching Intronaut, Behold… The Arctopus, and Mouth Of The Architect. Behold… The Arctopus’s Skullgrid made our Top 50 albums list from last year, and Intronaut have ties to fellow post-metal act Jesu, who are awesome in case you don’t know. Intronaut is about to drop their newest full-length next month entitled Prehistoricisms, so jump on the bandwagon now before they are hott.

Behold… The Arctopus : Scepters

Intronaut : Australopithecus

Tomorrow night The Faint will be at the Variety Playhouse. I just listened to their newest LP, Fascination, and it was very interesting for a dance-rock sort of thing. I honestly haven’t had too much exposure to these guys before now, but I think I’m going to go check them out and fix that.

The Faint : Machine In The Ghost

Friday night the Star Bar is the place to be with 3 great local acts: Cassavettes, Warm In The Wake, and The Goldest.

Warm In The Wake : Tame Thoughts

The new old venue blowing up with shows all of a sudden is the Highland Inn Ballroom. A few shows worth looking into:

Tonight you can see some ex-Blame Game action at Lenny’s late night with Off Duty Cops.

Wednesday night I’m going to see the Cheeseburger, Brass Castle, Club Awesome show at the Drunken Unicorn.

Thursday night you can check out the Tenth To The Moon CD Release show at the Star Bar with Missile Command and The Falcon Lords.

Saturday night I like the Lay Down Mains and Sonn Av Krusher show at the Drunken Unicorn.

Tonight the tour I’ve been riding along on hits Atlanta at Lenny’s, so if you know what’s good for you, I’ll see all of your shining faces tonight (It’s free, don’t f@ck up!):

Thursday night there are three great shows, so make sure to catch one of these:

The Variety Playhouse: Tilly And the Wall, the Ruby Suns, The Coathangers
The Earl: Cassavettes, The Preakness, Mary O Harrison
The Clermont Lounge: Pistolero, Swank Sinatra

Saturday we are teaming up with Pine Magazine to give you a ludicrously great line-up all day long at WonderRoot. Things begin sharply at 3pm and go late into the night. It’s only $5, so all of you who were complaining that Corndogorama was too expensive, you have no excuse not to catch this:

What Up In The ATL?

This week I’m going to hitch a ride with one of the local bands I’ve been hott on this year, This Piano Plays Itself, for their first ever tour and blog from the road. For everyone else who is chilling in the city this week, there are some great shows that you should go to:

Tomorrow night I recommend going to The Earl to see The NEC, Sic Alps, Suitcases, Hawks.

Sic Alps : Mater

Wednesday night the show at the Drunken Unicorn looks intriguing with O’Brother, Dignan, Quiet Company.

Dignan has some cool podcasts:

Thursday night I wish I could see the “last reunion” of Passer By with Fox Trotsky and Baak Gwai at WonderRoot.

Baak Gwai : Gnarly

Friday night there is a lot of stuff going on, but I like the WonderRoot show with Fernandina, Pacific Before Tiger, Cohen And The Ghost. This song makes me laugh:

Fernandina : Atlanta Traffic Sucks

Saturday night don’t miss what may be the final ever show at I Can Fly with Vera Fang, The Orphins, Club Of Rome, St Peter Pocket Veto. That’s a really great line-up at a venue I am going to miss. I caught Fag Static and Sleep State killing it last Saturday night and I highly recommend checking out both of those bands as well.

Sleep State at I Can Fly last Saturday

This week at Ohmpark we are going to be focusing on upcoming albums from Atlanta artists. There are a ton of them on the horizon, so I’m excited. We’ll dive into that tomorrow afternoon, but for now, here are the shows I recommend checking out this week:

Tonight you should go to Lenny’s and see The Jet Age:

The Jet Age : O, Calendar

Tomorrow night When Rocky Beat The Russian will be at Smith’s Olde Bar. I’ve been jamming their new EP a lot lately and I’l have more on that soon.

Thursday night the Colin Mee affiliated Hollow Stars at the Drunken Unicorn seems like something that needs to be looked into:

Hollow Stars : Problematic Tribute

Saturday there are two really great choices:

Dark Meat, Diplo, Noot D’ Noot at Whirlyball or Fag Static, Benard, Sleep State, Geraldo at the I Can Fly House.

Even post-Corndog, this city has so many great shows to choose from!

Tonight I’m hosting a house party with some sweet bands from Tennessee, so come drink off the keg:

Tomorrow night there is the Summer Slaughter Tour at The Masquerade for all the metalheads:

Wednesday
night I highly recommend seeing Dethklok at The Tabernacle.

Thursday night No Age is going to be at Eyedrum.

Friday night there are various 4th of July shows around the city, most notably King Khan and The Shrines at Lenny’s and Club Awesome at the Star Bar.

Saturday night has some awesome shows:

Star Bar: Gringo Star, All The Saints, Brass Castle (my pick)
The Fox Theater: Tom Waits (SOLD OUT)
The Drunken Unicorn: Fleet Foxes
The Earl: Boris

Corndogorama is the best local music fest in Atlanta, so that is the biggest deal this week. We will have our guide to Corndog’ soon, but there is also a ridiculous amount of other great shows going on in town this week, so here’s some:

Tonight I urge you to catch Times New Viking, The Preakness, Gold Painted Nails at The Earl.

The Preakness : Demons

Wednesday night I’m going to catch the Russian Circles, Daughters, Sorry No Ferrari show at The Drunken Unicorn.

Daughters : Recorded Inside A Pyramind

Thursday night Daniel Johnston will be at The Variety Playhouse.

Daniel Jonston : True Love Will Find You In The End

Friday night Islands will be at The Masquerade. It is also the last ever night of Decatur Social Club. I’m going to try and hit both of those and Corndog’, so that should be a long day and night.

Islands : The Arm

Saturday night Frightened Rabbit will be at The Drunken Unicorn.

Frightened Rabbit : The Modern Leper

Sunday night you can catch Zechs Marquise (featuring members of The Mars Volta) and 13 Day Mission at an early show at The Ozone Lair.

Tomorrow night we have three phenomenal bands for you to check out at the awesome new art facility WonderRoot. All proceeds go to benefit the art center. This is going to be something special so don’t miss it.

Nomen Novum : Aunt Urn

This Piano Plays Itself : These Are Segments Of Revolving

Royal Bangs : Japanese Cars

Other things going on this week I recommend:

Thursday night you can choose between a nice, melodic, sweet sounding show at The Earl with Thao with The Get Down Stay Down, Liz Durrett, and Atlanta’s Sealions or you can catch a hard, loud, hard rocking show at Lenny’s with Fuct, Mourdella, and Sonn Av Krusher.

This weekend I’m heading to Athens for Athfest, but if you’re stayin ITP, I suggest going to The Earl Saturday night for the Modey Lemons, The Liverhearts, Vera Fang show.

For those of you not going to Bonnaroo this weekend, there are plenty of great shows to check out ITP:

Tonight I’m hoping to catch the show at Lenny’s that was supposed to happen yesterday at the 5 Spot. The mammoth Monday night line-up includes Apocalyptic Visions, Club of Rome, Burden of Vision, Nerdkween, Empty Jester, Rev Rebel, Cherri Swan, SoSoDeath.

Tomorrow night the Dysrhythmia, Chopper, Battlecat, We Be The Echo show at The Earl is very enticing.

Wednesday night if don’t have ticket to the sold out Vampire Weekend show at The Variety Playhouse, you can check out Mudhoney, Birds Of Avalon, Anna Kramer at The Earl or you can see Aceyalone and Dilated Peoples at The Loft.

Thursday night you should check out the Gringo Star, Colour Revolt show at The Loft.

Friday night I like Shearwater, Silver Lakes, and Jeffrey Butzer at The Earl, but Ladytron at The Variety Playhouse is cool too.

Saturday night you should check out the I Can Fly House hosting Lay Down Mains, New Brutalism, Hawks, Chrissakes.

Sunday night I recommend checking out W-S Burn at 11:11 Teahouse

Preview some bands:

Shearwater : Leviathan Bound

Colour Revolt : Naked And Red

Birds Of Avalon : Measure Of The Same

Dysrhythmia : Sleep Decayer

W-S Burn : Counting Plastic Toys

Club Of Rome : The Ballad of Phil Spector
