[Mp3] Vocabulary: “Things I Like”
Vocabulary just released a new EP called Good Things. For the most part, the six pieces feel more like sketches than finished songs, but they’re intriguing sounds and ideas nonetheless. I’m looking forward to catching Vocabulary live this Saturday (Oct. 8th) night at Wholly Roller’s showcase at The Cottage with Places, Gem Club, and Holy Spirit. Here’s the bonus track, my favourite from the new EP:

[Mp3] Cassandras: “Rise Up”
Cassandras just released a new three song record called Hari Pari Mandala Gosthi. Between it and their record from earlier this year, Cassandras has fast become one of my favourite Atlanta acts of 2011. Go listen to this incredible song, and then go download the whole album for whatever price you want:

[Mp3] The Electric Nature: “Super Space Disco Party”
One Atlanta artist who I should have mentioned much earlier and more often is Michael Potter aka The Electric Nature. In a city with a vibrant and extremely underrated noise/experimental scene, The Electric Nature has established itself as one of this year’s most compelling drone acts. Potter has already released a lot of great material earlier this year that I need to get around to blogging about, but he just released an even newer record called Drugs in Space. I love that title, and it’s certainly descriptive of the sort of music contained within. It would be a great soundtrack for if you were, oh, I don’t know, reading some science fiction or something. Anyway, I highly recommend you go pick up this record for whatever price you choose:

[Mp3] Faun and a Pan Flute: “peach is got it / getting a hair cut at 100MPH”
I finally sat down with Faun and a Pan Flute‘s latest record, I’m not Prostitute, and I’m really starting to dig it. At first listen, its mathy and seemingly ambling elements are a bit disorienting, but the more I hear it, the more fond I grow of this particular flavour of psych-pop. You can grab the five songs for whatever price you want from Primitive Patterns:

[Mp3] Cassandras: “Stars”
One great local record from the first half of the year that I had overlooked until just recently is Cassandras: 3 Songs. Over the course of four epic songs, Cassandras command a dynamic sound that puts a progressive twist on ’00′s-style indie rock. It’s an impressive EP, so go ahead and pick it up for free:

[Mp3] Djarum: “Bonkers”
These days, the hip-hop that seems most interesting to me tends to be on the instrumental side, and luckily in this town, there is no shortage of creative beats. The latest record that has me bobbing my head is Don’t Let Me Down by Djarum. If you’re looking for some laid back jams to vibe out to, go grab this for free:

[Mp3] BOSCO: “Pacer”
While this blog has been on summer vacation, a lot of new local music dropped, so it’s going to take me while to catch back up. But one of the best things I’ve heard over the last month is the new six song EP from Brittany Bosco. Both the songwriting and the production are top notch, and the record manages to be adventurous while still broadly appealing. Go get it for free:

[Guest Mixtape] Vocabulary: Hopefull Impressions
Being a huge fan of mixtapes, I decided it would be fun to have musicians, bloggers, labels, etc contribute mixes to Ohmpark. This latest guest mixtape comes from Savannah, Georgia’s Cameron Allen, aka Vocabulary. [Mp3] Book Club: “Meal Of Dreams”
Ghost, the debut record from Robbie Horlick’s new project Book Club, comes out next week (August 2). With Book Club, Horlick has put away the indie rock of Cassavetes in favour of a forthright folk approach, enlisting the aid of local talents such as Oryx & Crake‘s Matt Jarrard and vocalist Leigh Anne Macquarrie. The result is a heart-felt and beautifully crafted collection of ten songs that is not only Horlick’s most remarkable release to date, but also one of the best records that will come out of Atlanta this year. Book Club‘s release show is at the Earl August 4th, and here’s a track from Ghost:

[Mp3] Qurious: “Photinus”
I’ve been listening to a lot of Qurious lately, especially their first release from 2009, Transmission Permissions. The five plus a bonus track record feels more like a collection of demos when compared to the epic Planet Plant, but it’s interesting to hear the early stages of one of the most unique and impressive bands in this city. Here’s my favourite from it:
