Harvest Of Hope Festival Day 2
I started out the day hanging out with my neighbors at camp, who were all cool peeps. It turned out some of them were also there as press. It took me a while to secure my creds and power up my equipment, so the first band I saw was Deerhunter. The core members performed as a 4-piece and they played 2 new songs in a set that was heavy in older stuff. It was a very good show that finished off with a beautiful noise jam. The second video below is the first new song they played, but to perfectly honest, I thought it was a little boring. The other new one was great though:
Afterwards I ran into the guys from Summerbirds In The Cellar, who I was surprised recognized me. I also accosted Lockett Pundt briefly to tell him how much I love the Lotus Plaza record (plenty of hype on that forthcoming). After that I went to check out Health, and I thought they were phenomenal. They sort of reminded me of Lightning Bolt, but with better compositions. If you like noisy stuff, they are a can’t miss band.
After that I left the fest and went into town in search of some Internet. I got lost for a while and pulled back into the fest area just as John Vanderslice was finishing his set. Other than having to pay for parking again, it is very easy to come and go from the grounds. I watched most of the Mountain Goats solo set, and it was really good, but it just isn’t my thing. The dude definitely has an entertaining personality.
I watched a bit of Bad Brains and it was totally outside of the range of music I enjoy. Then I caught Tilly And The Wall, and while I thought I sort of liked them before, I now officially don’t. The tap dancer is really annoying. And it is cool to have chicks cussing a bunch, but that is about the only appealing thing about them to me, and that is not saying much. it just felt too gimmicky, and when I closed my eyes and listened to the music, it wasn’t very enjoyable. But they sure had some stage presence:
After that, I headed to the campsite and partied down again. Saturday night the campgrounds wasn’t quite as out of control as the first night, but it was still action packed. Here are a couple of videos from the camping scene the first night, though, to give you a taste:
